"Goodnight, Little Rey"
Author's Note: The above video has some art in the first half which inspired this story (the art with Rey as a little girl and Kylo also younger). This video makes me cry every time I watch it! I love the fan art so much, every art style is so different and yet so powerful. It shows me that so many people carry hurt and understand loneliness, which I can see through their art. It inspires me to write. Thanks for reading.

Rey pulls her covers off her bed and lets them fall to the dusty stone floor. "Mr. Rock, Mr. Rock... where are you?"
I shut her door so no one will hear us. Her room is really small. There's a tiny bed and a bedside table and that's all. No book shelf or books or toys. The only light in the room is from the moonshine through the window. A candle holder sits on her night table but there are no matches to light the candle.
"Rey, I'm going to go now," I say, my tiredness coming back.
"Just wait, I'll find him," she says.
I turn to leave.
"Found him!" Rey yells in victory.
"Okay. Have a good night." I turn the door handle and Rey hurries off her bed to get to me, tripping herself up in the sheets and landing on the hard floor. The thump of her head on the stone makes me cringe. There's a moment of silence and then she starts to cry, a tiny high pitched sound.
I go to her and lift her up into my arms. She's so light that even my folded cloak is heavier when I carry it from the washing room. I sit down on the bed with her in my lap.
"Are you okay?"
She shakes her head no.
"Did you hit your head?"
She shakes her head yes.
"Can I see?"
Rey stops crying, her breath staggered as she lowers her hands from her head. Even in the moonshine I can see the bump that's forming there. Her breathing slows and her eyelids look heavy. She tries to stop them from closing but they keep slipping down. She'll fall asleep soon.
"It doesn't look that bad. You'll be fine," I say.
She starts to say something in response but her words just drift off and her head starts to nod. She falls to the side and I catch her before she topples onto the floor, then she falls the other way against my chest, her body becoming limp. Her small hand relaxes and the rock she was clutching falls to the floor.
I sigh, pulling her knees up so she doesn't slide off and fall to the floor. Her breath is warm against my shirt and I close my eyes, feeling the heat from her small form and listening to her gentle breathing sounds. It's so peaceful that I almost nod off too. I shake my head to wake myself then stand up and lay Rey down onto the bed. She keeps her body curled up and mumbles something as she snuggles up to the pillow.
I pick the blanket off the floor and hug it for a moment to warm it a little before laying it on her. Then I set it over her, bringing it up to her neck and tucking her in. My foot steps onto something hard on the ground. I look down. It's her rock. I pick it up and put it in her small hand then wrap her fingers around it.
"Goodnight Rey," I whisper, setting the blanket over her closed fist. Then I turn and leave, locking the door behind me.
