Chapter 9: Crystal Caverns

Author's note: I plan to structure this book in two parts. The first one, that I'm writing now, I mean it to be about Ben's atonement we didn't get after tros. Well, you'll see what I want to do with him in the next chapters.
And the second part is about saving the galaxy itself, discovering all the enemies (yes, there'll be more) etc.

~~Rey~~
There was an eerie light at the end of the dark tunnel. A light that tugged at Rey's heart. Blue and faint, it flickered constantly.

Her hand was clasped with Ben's, but sooner or later she knew they would have to part ways. And her grip began to loose, until her fingers slid slowly from his hand.

Millions of faded voices whispered lively in her head as she made her way forward. The soft sound of her steps against the stone ground echoed off the walls. And she walked farther toward that light that called her. But what about Ben? Was he seeing that light too? Or did it choose to show only to her? What if he saw a red light, like his old lightsaber?
But she knew she must not let her fears overcome her. He was a jedi now, and she should not question his loialty.

Yet he had been a jedi before...

Her paces seemed to be slowing down as she approached that beam of blue light. And it seemed like it was within her reach now. So Rey extended her arm, and splayed her palm as if to grasp it. But the light only moved farther.

And Rey with it. And with a patience she had never known she had, she walked quietly after it, through dark tunnels.

She forgot about everything else. Her eyes were aimed on the tiny spot of light, as if it was actually an universe, as if it was a void.

That light made the drops of water that trickled down the damp walls gleam blue. And Rey could feel that the gallery was beginning to grow wider and wider. And that this was the place where she needed to stop.

Her boots made a low crumbling as she stepped on the sand that was spread from place to place. And it almost took all her strength to put one foot in front of the other. This place felt overwhelming with a power she couldn't explain. Or it was her that was not prepared to take this step.

She stopped, and even thought to walk back as she gazed into that ligh, when a voice came to her through the Force. "These are your first steps, Rey." and it rang odd in her ears, for she had never heard it before. It appeared like it belonged to a young man. And she didn't understand. First steps to what? She had thought she had taken them.

"Don't be afraid." the same voice echoed in her head. "You're on the right path. Let the light guide you."

Taking a deep breath, she nodded, even though there was no one that could see her, and stepped forward.

"Feel the Force, Rey." She heard Luke's voice, the same way he had told her back on Ahch-To.

"I have no Force left." She said clearly as she cast her gaze around the walls of the hall, as if looking there for answers.

"You do have, Rey. Sooner or later, it will return to you."

And she sat down right there and crossed her legs.

"Let it guide you, Rey." another male voice spoke from the void.

"Feel it within you, and restore the balance in the galaxy, as I did." the first voice spoke again. And she realized whose voice it had been; Anakin Skywalker's.

"Seek for the new Force, Rey. For the Jedi have wronged. And there cannot be light without darkness." Luke said.

And there were many voices, so many voices. Too many voices, that she couldn't keep count. But there was one that pricked at her ears. A voice she has craved to hear. A voice that bore a mother's love and care. Leia's voice.

" And you'll never be alone, Rey. Never. For your first mission has been fulfilled. And now you have the right guidance, as the other has yours."

"Rey." Luke's voice rang in her ears. And the light in front of her grew brighter, as its gleam began to make her closed eyes want to open. "Great dangers lay ahead. And dark times await the Galaxy. And hard tasks you'll have to pass, and great losses, before the galaxy reaches the balance. But we put our faith in you."

"Settle down now, you must not, young jedi." an old, crinkled voice echoed in her ears.

"Reach out, Rey." Anakin said.

And she could feel the gazes of every force ghost, even though her eyes were closed. She stretched her hands to the light that now gleamed with power. And this time, it didn't run away, but came closer, until it nestled in her palm.

And she could feel that burning light fade, replaced by a smaller one. Her eyes opened slowly as she felt a weight in her palm, instead of nothing. She closed her fist around it, as if afraid it will go.

But it didn't. And when she opened it to see what it was, she saw a tiny golden crystal resting in her palm. So that must be it, the kyber crystal.

She reached for the empty hilt at her belt and un strapped it. The light was now so faint, she could hardly find the little hole where the crystal would rest. She uncovered the hole, and placed the crystal inside.

She was finally doing this. And she was eager to see her new creation as she stood up and ignited the lightsaber. A golden blade sprang in front of her eyes. What would Ben say about it? And, thinking about Ben, has he received his?

~~Ben~~
He could feel Rey's fingers slip from his. And his first reaction was to grasp her hand, but resisted it. He knew this had to happen, sooner or later. He knew they had their own way here, as every jedi before them.

As he stepped deeper into the cave, he glimpsed a light at the end of the darkness. And he followed it.

The first time he had come here with his master, he had been afraid. But now it felt different. Was it Rey, or the full light within him?

He supposed they were both true. Without Rey, there wouldn't be light in him.

Unlike Rey, he knew what he had to do, for it was like a deja vu for him.

As he stepped into a large hall, he cast his gaze around. Now he ought to sit down and try to speak to the ghosts of the jedi, try to feel the force.

Only that the last time he had been here, he had been innocent. Now his soul was stained with all his crimes, all his mistakes.

He found himself breathing heavily, and his heart hammering in his chest, ready to race away. And he realized: he was afraid. He was afraid that the force ghosts will not acknowledge him as a jedi.

"Ben." the sudden voice startled him and made him take a step back and turn his head this way and that, eyes wide with fear. A voice I've never heard, he thought.

"A jedi must not fear. For fear brought me to what I had become."

And then, something, a feeling, a sense, told Ben who this man had to be. "Grandfather?" he asked, incredulously.

"Yes, Ben. And we finally get to talk."

Ben watched as the blue eerie ghost before him was not the dreaded sith lord that had buried the galaxy in fear, but a younger man. A man in whom he could see himself.

"I've called you." Ben said, a hint of disappointment in his voice. "I've always called you. And you never answered."

He could see the young Anakin force ghost lowering his eyes. And a sudden sadness shadowed them.

"I'm sorry for that, my son. But the darkness was too tightly wrapped around you."

"I know. I know it now." Ben admitted miserably. "Yet I thought you were speaking to me." Ben rose his big eyes hopefully at his grandfather.

Anakin advanced until they were only ten inches apart. He reached out and placed a bluish hand on Ben's cheek. His thumb stroked his grandchild's skin, right where the scar Rey had given him should have been. "It wasn't me, child. And I'm sorry for making you believe that."

"It was Palpatine, wasn't it?" he asked as he stifled a sob.

Anakin nodded sadly. "But now I'll guide you through your journey."

And suddenly, Ben felt surrounded by too many light presences. Through which, the most brightly, shone his mother's.

"Mother!" his eyes widened as he ran to her side, and dropped to his knees before her, his hands wrapping around her waist. "I'm... I'm sorry." he sobbed in her lap.

He felt her loving touch against his hair.

"I've always wanted you back home, my sweet child. And I forgave you. I always do."

"A hard path lies ahead of you, young jedi. For you must prove yourself strong to make up for your dark deeds."

Ben squinted at the man who had spoken the words. He seemed rather old, his robes were white and dusted, his brown plain cloak worn off by the ages and weather. He knew this man too. He was his namesake, Obi Wan Kenobi. Ben Kenobi, as his parents and Luke had told him.

"And you must never let that hope fade out of you." Kenobi advanced toward him and pointed at his heart.

The next person that came into view arose inside Ben some unwanted memories. Memories he should have kept hidden. Memories he should have long forgotten.

His eyes turned into a glare at his uncle, as his blue appearance stepped forward.

"I hope you forgave me." he said. "As I have forgiven you." His voice was calm, and a faint smile crossed his face.

"I can't be forgiven." Ben shrugged as the image of him killing his father came into his mind. The image of him wiping out entire planets. The image of him trying to harm Rey.

"You do. As once you said, let go. Let go of the past, and become the person you were meant to be. It is true, what you did cannot be undone. But it's time you clean it. Only you can clean your soul of those stains."

He nodded weakly. The force ghosts whom he had thought to be so menacing, were now offering him strength.

" Alone again, never you'll have to be. A reason to fight, you have now" Yoda said and grinned up at him.

Ben's eyes lowered so he would meet the old creature's big ones. Yoda chuckled as he said the last phrase.

"Believe it or not, your time has come." Leia spoke. "An only together, you will succeed."

And Ben knew she meant Rey. Suddenly, he felt the urge to ask her if she had seen the other half of his Dyad, but had the sense not to do it. He knew way too well that his mother was referring at them as together as jedi, not more. But he couldn't stop the feelings he had grown to have for her. And he tried to keep them locked down inside the depths of his mind, for he didn't know how the ghosts would receive it.

He knew what was next now as he crossed his legs down on the hard stone floor, and closed his eyes. A faint light danced before him. It's must be Rey, Rey's light. And he could feel it coming nearer. And suddenly, it was her bathed in that eerie light. He cocked his head to the side. Was he imagining this? It must that he did.

But he controlled his feelings and channeled them back to the force. Would he think about her, they would know. Would know that he saw her as more than just his other half in the force, more than just a training fellow, more than just a battle comrade, more than just a friend. She had woken up something inside his heart that was too late to be stopped.

His thoughts drifted back to the light in front of him. It was beginning to fade, as it was replaced by a stone that rested in his palm. His eyes opened and met a silver-blue crystal. He unclasped the empty hilt from his belt, and matched the crystal in the tiny hole made especially for it.
But he wanted to know if it was all. But he knew it wasn't. For every jedi had to confront their own fears.

And as he sat up, noticed another presence in front of him. Anakin.

"I still can't believe me they accepted me." Ben told him.

"I was old, I never got a chance to live after my redemption." Anakin began, and a sad smile crossed his face. "But this chance was given to you. Make it matter, my son. You have a chance to make up for everything you've done, and be at peace with yourself."

"And then? Then what? What do I do?" he asked, the question so much bigger than the words.

"One thing at a time, child. The future will unfold to you as you'll walk through it. And it is clearer than you may ever think."

Ben looked troubled. And his grandfather got it.

"You may think it's over now." Anakin said. "But as every Jedi must confront their greatest fears, you have one more task here." and Anakin held a hand out to the darkness farther inside the cave and nodded an approval.

~~Rey~~
She made a little pace back, when another presence appeared behind her. She turned, startled.

"Why... Why can I see you?" Rey asked the force ghost of Anakin. "I thought I didn't have the Force anymore."

"It is true, you don't. Not yet. But has my grandchild not told you? This is a sacred place." he said as he waved a hand around the cavern hall. "This is the place where we live in."

"Ah, I see..." Rey said. And she had to admit, she was a bit lost.

"Face your fears, you have to." a green creature appeared next to Anakin. "Alone, you must go now."

But Rey was reluctant to do so. She looked questioningly at the green jedi. What if she got killed? What if she never came out? What if she never saw Ben again?

When facing Palpatine, she had been with him. When discovering she does not have the force, she had had him. And when her nightmares had overwhelmed her, he had been there, too, like a veil of protection wrapped around her.

But now she was alone. And she has just realized that. Yet it was her quest now. And maybe he was going through resembling things.

She nodded to the two jedi and brought her new lightsaber close to her face. Its golden light danced across the walls, making the wet spots shimmer as she made her way down the cavern.
