Chapter 23: The Wall Between Us

A/N: Heya again, Reylo fellows! Here I want to explore Rey and Finn's friendship a bit, since there's no chapter that contains much between them. Chill, Reylos, it's no finnrey chapter!
No Ben and Rey either, but I swear the waiting it's worth it!

~*~

Rey woke up hours later to a dimly lit room. She didn't know how long she had been asleep, but she supposed it had to be already night, for her eyes were blinded by the strong light of a lamp that rested on her table.

She blinked a few times to shake the drowsiness and frowned. Her gaze passed over the room. The white walls, the wooden floor, the green curtains... It was her old room from the resistance base. But how did she get there?

Sometime, long ago, it was bringing her happiness, the sense of a family. But now she felt so alone. And she was afraid to fall asleep again. In the past weeks, Ben had been there to hold her. He had held her on Takodana, he had held her in the falcon, when the nightmares had overwhelmed her, in the caves she had woken up in his arms, and in the prison on Lothal it had been him as well that had shielded her against the cold with his warmth.

She threw the coverlet off her body and swung her legs over the edge of the bed as if she had to attend somewhere and it was too late.
But when she pushed herself up and tried to stand, a sudden searing pain that shot through her right ankle pushed her back down on the edge of the bed, whimpering. And she remembered it all, remembered how she had fallen to the ground and sprained it, and everything that had happened next.

A pang of guilt settled in her throat at the thought of her failure. Where had the strength with which she had defended the resistance been?

She closed her eyes and heaved a breath. Her hands were trembling, and suddenly she felt trapped. The thought of not being able to walk brought her worst nightmares to life. And being alone in the room, at that hour, after all that had happened that day, only increased her fear.

Wincing from the pain, she made herself stand. Limping to the wall, she placed her palms on it for support and dragged herself to the door. It was good that the dress she wore was only a little bit past her knees, and did not brush the floor to make her trip.
But where did she want to go? Nowhere in special. Only to make sure she was safe.

By the time she reached the threshold, she found she was thirsty. And her head has already begun to spin a bit, both from waking up and from her weakened state.

Her hand found the door, and she cracked it open, to a completely dark corridor.

They must be all asleep, she thought as she widened the gap, to have enough space to slip outside. It means it must be really late.

She stopped when she the door creaked loudly. Her heart caught in her throat, and she gasped as her hand remained outstretched in the air. She knew that the wooden floor would creak even louder, and it was a good possibility to rouse the whole resistance from sleep.

She made it out on the corridor and was fumbling on the wall for the lighting spot when she heard the hurried steps coming toward her.
Rey turned on her heels, and a hand grabbed her wrist in the dark, before that person turned the light on and she realized it was Finn.

"Rey, thanks the force you're awake!" Finn said as he hugged her. "Though you've slept so little."

The suddenness of it made her lean into her friend's arms for support. She was tired, and her leg was being feisty again.

He put an arm around her and helped her back into her chamber.

"I'll bring you anything you want." he said as he eased her on the mattress.

"I was thirsty." her voice was drowsy.

"Well, I'll bring you the glass I have in my room. You need to rest." he stood up and walked away.

And before Rey could realize he was gone, he was back again, with the water she so wanted.

"Thank you." She said before she took a long sip.

Finn sat down next to her, and placed a hand on her shoulder. His eyes watched her carefully, as if she would choke on every drop that slid down her throat.

"I though I have slept a week." She said when she was done.

"We found you collapsed in the mud around six. Now it's almost midnight. The little one told us you had remained behind. And it took us some time to find you. It was getting dark by the time Poe spotted you in that clearing. Yet that leg had carried you a lot." he pointed to her twisted ankle.

" Yeah, I have no idea how I did it. Though it must have been the anger inside me."

"Annika told us there was a man who wanted to kill you. "

"No." She said, and suddenly her voice was firm as she placed the glass back on the nightstand. "That was what I thought at first, too, but actually not." her eyes shifted from her lap, to Finn's dark ones. And guilt and dread overwhelmed her again as she took his hand in hers. "Forgive me, Finn, I couldn't stop him."

"Shh, it's alright." he squeezed her hand back.

"No, it's not!" she snapped, yet her voice quivered. She had to gulp down before being able to speak again. "He was from the final order, a spy!"

His smile faded, his face grew grave.

"What-?" his eyes betrayed disappointment, and he slid his hand away from Rey's.

What she had been dreading the most was happening. They trusted her little after she had been with Ben. And they would trust her even less now, but she had to tell them the truth if she wanted to do a good thing.

Rey wanted to break the wall that was building between her and Finn. She was afraid it will grow so high and wide, she would never be able to reach out to her friend again.

She never realized that her hands were trembling in her lap. And that her eyes had formed tears in their corners.

Even so, she pushed the crushing words out of her mouth. "You need to move the base before it's too late."

Finn looked her face up. Her eyes, her brows, her lips. As if he wasn't sure on her words, as if he still doubted her. And where his gaze would once caress her, now it burnt her skin.

"And you were foolish enough to trust him, you know who I'm talking about!" he glared at her.

The words should have hit her right to the core, for she took a sharp breath as she heard them, and her tears were finally allowed to flow free down her cheeks. That was not her Finn. It was a different man, someone she hardly knew. Or he had been like that all the time, and she just did not realize.
Only thinking about the first days of their friendship, how they had found in each other the person they needed the most, tore her heart.

Realizing his mistake, Finn's eyes softened. "You should have consulted us at least, on whether to trust him or not."

He reached out and his knuckles brushed against her jaw. "You're my best friend, Rey. You'll always be. I'm sorry, I'm sorry for telling you those things. I don't know what has gotten into my head." he closed his eyes and heaved a breath. "I'm such a fool! An Poe is an even bigger one!"

Rey chuckled at that, though she was still wiping the tears from her face.

"Rey," he said, and both his hands cupped her face as he spoke the last words. Her bleary eyes flashed open and she looked at him. "You're such a good person, the gentlest soul I've ever met, the brightest and purest one. No wonder that even the monster has fallen in love with it."

She was exhausted, hurt, and lonely. Those hazel pools missed the gleam they once had. The gleam they caught whenever she looked at Ben. Finn hated to admit it, yet it was true.

He leaned down and placed a kiss on her forehead. And even though she felt like she were betraying Ben, she let that touch comfort her.
She did not want to put even more distance between them, so she decided for a moment to let the guard down, her heart and soul numb with exhaustion and guilt and loss. Guilt for the resistance, for Finn and Poe and Rose. And now, guilt for she felt like she were betraying Ben.

She already felt guilty. She was safe in the confines of her room, with a friend close to her, while Ben was struggling in prison, alone.
Maybe they're starving him, she thought, and she felt the urge to ask Finn about that. But the words lost somewhere in her throat.

"You need to rest, Rey." he whispered. "I want you to be well. And ignore Poe," he shook his head. "He's just anxious. He's anxious for your well-being. As I am. As is Rose. As is everyone who has a soul."

And she waited for him to make sense of what he had just said. His brows furrowed, his eyes fell to the hand he held in his lap.

"And if... Ben..." She noticed the difficulty with which he still said his name. As if it were unreal, just a phantom. "If he had fallen for your soul... Then it must be that he has a soul too." he rose his eyes to Rey, his brows were still scrunched, his gaze still concentrated.

She smiled. And tears of joy almost brimmed her eyes.

"He's truly changed, hasn't he?" Finn asked, part bewilderment, part resolve.

She nodded weakly, as she couldn't contain the happiness that brimmed over the shores of her heart.

Rey felt there were more things he wanted to say. Things she wouldn't like. But he kept them to himself for her sake.

"Well..." he stammered, his words muddled between them with wariness. "I guess you should sleep now."

She knew he was disappointed. And she knew what would atone for it right now.

"Stay with me," She said hastily, when she realized the loneliness was beginning to claw at her heart again. "Until I fall asleep."

She craved someone's company in this moment, to shield her from her own dark thoughts that seeped in her mind. It was always Rose or Anni that eased her to sleep. For alone, she was lost. And, so much as she felt guilty, she knew that Ben was happy to know her safe.

For a moment, Finn just frowned at her.

Was I not clear enough? She wondered. Rey was about to open her mouth when his eyes suddenly softened and his other hand enveloped hers.

"Sure." he said in a breath, as if he could sense she was about to dash toward the door.

She could feel it deep, his nervousness, as he pushed aside the coverlet for her to lunge on the mattress. And she knew what it meant. And what his anger at Ben meant, too.

Rey did not want to give him false hope. But neither did she want to hurt him. And she felt like she needed a hand to grab her out of the dark hole she had sank into.

Finn gently tucked the blanket beneath her chin after she placed her head on the pillow, and brushed the hair from her face.

His palm rested there, his finger traced her jaw, as he sat on the edge of the bed, ready to leave. And her heavy eyes were still closed, as if no words would explain it now, as if she wanted to apologize for something she couldn't say. As if she was begging him to stop touching her, for she felt like she was betraying someone she dearly loved. And as if she enjoyed it, for it took the pain away.

"Sweet dreams..." and he paused. It seemed that he had a difficulty in calling her.

And Rey imagined how Ben would use that sweet name he had made up for her, and her eyes were about to glisten with tears, when she closed them to conceal everything from her friend that watched her keenly as his hand stroked her hair tenderly. And suddenly she felt a pang of anger, she felt as if she were caught in a cage, she wanted to snap Finn's hand away and tear down the stairs and straight to the cells she wasn't allowed to. She was slightly crying for Ben, but she realized she was grateful Finn had remained with her. What would have happened if she were alone, with her thoughts? What would have happened if there was no one to ground her to the reality?

And finally, he seemed to have decided over it, as he simply resumed to "... Rey."

A/N: Thanks for all the votes and comments, they make my day!

Well, how did that final scene seem? It's important to me to know what you could feel from Finn to Rey.

For some people here this chapter might suck, yet I have some reasons to make it as it is.

Okay, don't be mad at me for that, but I wanted this chapter to be controversial. As you can see, his acts seem insistent to her. But the reason for she does not stop him is not because she likes it, but because she feels guilty to her friends, and especially to him.

She is sad that Ben is sentenced to death, and she wants to be alone, but this isn't good either. She needs her friend's company, but her friend actually feels more. So I hope it's clear that it's only from him and not from her.

I'll pay for this chapter. But again, please don't hurry to judge this chapter. Try to think one more time, and see beneath what could appear as finnrey (because it's definitely not). Tell me your honest opinions, but I don't want to make this story a fan service one. So take it as it is. Because I put a meaning behind.
