Colon and Semi-colon
Colon:
Using a colon---much like the actual organ---functions like a connection, the first statement directly linked to what comes after.
Ex: There are three elements of creative writing in this guide: grit, balance, and voice.
or
Ex: Three rules to putting out a fire: stop, drop, and roll.
Semi-colon:
A semi-colon links two independent clauses that are closely related.
How is a semi-colon different from a colon? It's in the name. Instead of a direct connection, think a close relationship; a cousin verse a sibling.
Ya'll catch that?
See how I used a semi-colon to link the two sentences? If I had restated my definition, I could have used a colon.
Ex: Think a close relationship: cousin, sibling, or parent.
In creative writing, we are more likely to link for effect or imagery's sake using semi-colons instead of make lists.
Ex: Amy is a morning person; Sally is not.
*Capitalize the first word after a semi-colon only if it is a proper noun or acronym. (Same with a colon.)
Use semi-colons when a period isn't strong enough!
