Draco heard the comment that Weasley made and immediately rose out of his seat and made his way towards the redhead. "I'm sorry Weasel, I could have sworn you called Hermione a stupid mudblood. My hearing must be off since I know a Weasel would never insult a muggleborn. Especially considering what your father does for that pittance he calls a salary." Ron's face turned the same shade of color as his hair and he began ranting at Draco. "Yeah, I called her a stupid mudblood. Why is it her business why I'm late? She's not my mum. And any muggleborn that lives with snakes like you and your housemates deserves to be called that term." Ron yelled this loudly enough to get the entire class' attention including Professor McGonagall.

Professor McGonagall had no sooner finished scolding Mr. Potter and Mr. Weasley when she hard Mr. Weasley refer to Miss Granger by that derogatory term. Before she could even subtract house points from Mr. Weasley for his comments, she saw Mr. Malfoy stand up and confront the boy. Minerva couldn't even have a moment to think about the pride she had at this display of house unity before Mr. Weasley continued with his rude comments. Minerva had to put a stop to this before her first year class got out of control. "Mr. Weasley and Mr. Malfoy, that is 20 points from both Gryffindor and Slytherin for fighting in my classroom and disrupting the learning of your fellow students. You will each receive detention with your respective Head of House. Now please sit down so that I might be able to do my job and begin the lesson."

Thoroughly embarrased and angry Ron went to go sit down and McGonagall thought she heard the faint mumblings of "uppity little mudblood getting me into trouble on the first day", but she decided to let it go and wait until the detention to deal with Mr. Weasley. Draco, however, was not as hotheaded as Ron and decided to just go sit in his seat and try not to make anymore trouble for either himself or his house. Since Professor Snape also happened to be his godfather Draco wasn't really worried about the punishment being all that harsh.

The rest of the lesson went without anymore fighting. McGonagall wouldn't go as far as to say the lesson went smoothly. While she had expected that most students would not be able to turn their animals into water goblets she wasn't expecting Mr. Finnigan's to blow up. She would need to have a talk with that young man about how to be careful and calm while attempting transfiguration spells.

Chapter 4 is finished. Next chapter is Hermione's reaction to the fight and the Charms lesson. This story is going to stay pretty close to the original cannon. As always I appreciate constructive feedback as this is my first attempt at writing a fanfic. Please comment!
