The air was cold as I sat by the window. I took a deep breath and felt it attack my lungs. I coughed, realizing that the breath was too big.
There was a knock on the door. I turned toward it and Kyle popped his head inside. "Hey, Kiddo. Raina is about to head to ger her car from Tanny's and she was wondering if you wanted to go with."
I shrugged, "Sure. Let me just get ready."
He nodded and closed the door behind him. I sighed and dressed myself in the warmest clothes I could find. Though it was fall, it was at least forty five degrees outside.
I curled around the green and blue scarf I found and headed to the door. Raina was waiting for me and she gave me a quick hug. "You're headache gone?"
I shrugged, "A little."
She nodded and passed the keys to her car to me. "You're driving it back. I have some stuff to do and then I'll be back by 10."
I nodded and we were on our way.
"So, how was seeing Joseph again? I saw that he brought you home."
I nodded, "Yeah, it was hard and different. Na, he hates me."
"He doesn't hate you. In fact, he loves you so much he keeps track of you. When you got together with Parker, he got upset. Said he wasn't good enough for you. Looked like a guy who would break your heart."
"What does he know? He doesn't even know Parker."
"Speaking of, have you talked to him since you got here?"
I shook my head, "He's super busy so I don't want to bother him. Besides, he's in Russia, so it's a little hard to talk to him right now."
Raina nodded. "Sounds like a lot of work. Does he like it?"
I nodded, "Oh, yeah. He loves it. His favorite movie to do was Friday Night's Out. He said that they had the best fun."
"Oh, I've seen that. That's the comedy about the boy being led on by the girl and then she discovers that he's actually a really hot guy. Yep, seen it. Loved it. Loved Parker in it."
I giggled at her. "I'm surprised you didn't fangirl to him. He was your celebrity crush four years ago."
"Oh, hush. Just because he's hot doesn't mean I want to date him, because I'm married and he's taken... by you."
"But if he wasn't and you weren't?"
She looked over at me, "Oh, yeah. In A heartbeat."
I giggled again. "Well, good thing he's mine."
We pulled into Tanny's parking lot and I hastened to the car. Raina rolled down the window.
"Go ask Joseph to ride with you. I don't want anything to happen to you."
I rolled my eyes. "Ok, whatever."
I watched her leave the driveway and I knocked on Tanny's door. I was expecting to see Tanny or even Joseph but who answered was a surprise. Grace.
"Grace, hi."
She waved at me and smiled. She gestured for me to come in and then grabbed a notebook on the end table that sat beside they door.
What's up? She wrote, showing it to me.
I spoke a little louder than necessary when I said, "I need a rider for the car. Na wants to protect me. Is Joseph here?"
Grace shook her head, No, mom is at the diner and Joseph is with his friends. Maybe I can go with you?
I looked at her in shock. "Are you sure? You haven't ridden with me since the accident."
Yes, I'm sure, Rae. Now come on.
I nodded and we made our way to the car. I sat in the driver's seat, while Grace took the passenger seat. Just like that night.
I shook my head, kicking the thought from coming back. "How's everything going with you?"
There was silence in the car and I realized she didn't hear me. Or knew that I was speaking. I tapped her shoulder and turned toward her so she could see my lips.
"How is everything going for you?"
She nodded and wrote in the notebook, Good, I have a boyfriend now.
"Really? That's cool. Where did you meet?"
He was my counselor. He taught me how to live with being deaf.
I looked down to my lap, still trying to pay attention to the road.
"I'm sorry, Grace. I should have listened to you."
I felt a hand on my wrist and I looked at her. She smiled at me, it's ok.
I looked to the road again, but something was wrong.
I felt the tire pop as I began to lose control of the car. I didn't know what to do except to push my hand toward Grace, hoping to save her from even more damage. I watched the face she made when the car began to flip.
One. Two. Three. Three flips and it's a miracle we're still alive. How? I don't know.
Grace looked at me and there were tears in her eyes. Are you Ok? She mouthed.
I began to nod when suddenly I felt a hand grip my hair. I thrashed around trying to break lose from the grip, but it was no use. They pulled until I could no longer fight.
I was pulled from the dead car as I watched Grace look on in fear.
I tried to turn toward my attacker, but the only thing I could see was a glimpse of pink. Something cracked over my head, and darkness became my friend.
