You took the leisurely route to Serein, refusing to put any more pressure on your aching joints. It really had been a while since you did any serious physical activity, and you were looking forward to playing volleyball after a two year hiatus. And... dare you even say you were maybe even looking forward to seeing... someone?

As you walk into the bustling coffee shop and head over to the gang's usual spot, you see all of them conspicuously hunched over the table while peering at Suga's phone screen. You approach silently and none of them seem to notice.

Sawamura Daichi

"She should be outside."

Sugawara Koushi

"No, it says she's in the back alley."

Bokuto Koutaro

"Where all the trash cans are?! Are you sure we shouldn't check to see if her body got dumped there?!"

Akaashi Keiji

"I'm sure she's fine. She can take care of herself."

Suga flinches at the sound of your voice, giving an overly elongated "oh heyyyy y/n". You roll your eyes and "accidentally" hit him with your backpack as you swing it off of your shoulders. He rubs his arm and grumbles.

"Stop stalking my location you weirdo."

"Wow you should be thanking me for making sure you didn't die on the way over here."

"Wait y/n, you weren't wearing that this morning."

You turn around and quickly make your way to the counter, grabbing a tray of various drinks and sandwiches before heading back to the table of boys who have seemingly frozen in place. Suga had his palm over his mouth as he stared at you, eyes upturned in what you KNOW is a mischievous smile. Daichi and Bokuto stared at you with wide eyes, Bokuto's mouth opening and closing slightly in an attempt to fill the silence. The only person who didn't have an odd expression on their face was Akaashi. Or so you thought. He was glad that you didn't seem to notice how he clenched his fists so hard under the table that his knuckles turned white.

"What?"

Sugawara Koushi

"I guess you borrowed that from Kuroo."

"Wait, how do you know?"

Sawamura Daichi

"Well it's kinda hard to not notice when his name is printed in bold across your back."

"You're joking-"

You put the tray down and scramble to take off the hoodie, and sure enough there it was. In bold white letters it said:

You look over in shock at the sudden interjection and Akaashi masks his nervousness by clearing his throat. Daichi raises an eyebrow.

"I mean... you guys barely know each other so dating right off the bat doesn't seem very feasible?"

Sawamura Daichi

"I don't know?! How was anyone supposed to prepare for a sudden change like this?!"

Suga and Bokuto turn to the rest of the group, absolutely dumbfounded when they find all of them with umbrellas in their hands.

Sawamura Daichi

"I told you it might rain this morning. Even y/n brought an umbrella."

Sugawara Koushi

"Ok but y/n's dumbass still forgot her jacket so the intelligence cancels out."

"HEY-"

Akaashi Keiji

"We can just pair up."

"I'll share with Akaashi!"

As if it was a sitcom, everyone simultaneously had a flashback of the last time Bokuto shared an umbrella with someone. He had insisted on holding the umbrella like the true gentleman he is, but believed that the higher he held it up the more it would cover them. He didn't think about how the wind was blowing the rain diagonally, and how holding the umbrella with your entire arm extended upward would cover... basically nothing... so both parties ended up soaked.

"Hey Bo, why don't you just take mine? I'll share with Akaashi."

Bokuto Koutaro

"It's ok I don't mind being Akaashi's umbrella buddy!"

"Oh- I just... don't think it's a great idea for you to share an umbrella with someone..."

Bokuto Koutaro

"W-why... why not?"

You felt everyone's anxiety rise.

"Well... it's because you're so big and strong and your shoulders are so wide and muscular! I don't think you'll be able to fit under half an umbrella without getting drenched!"

Bokuto Koutaro

"O-oh! Well if that's the case then I wouldn't mind walking on my own!"

He takes your umbrella with a grin and stands extra tall.

Akaashi Keiji

"Nice one."

"Learned from the best."

You all step outside and are met with a surprisingly refreshing sight. The dimly lit courtyard is now glowing with iridescent flecks of light reflecting off the trees, complimenting the waves of light dancing across the rain trekked windows of the buildings. The lamps around the courtyard provided a gentle, hazy glow that reminded you of fireflies as it swayed in the wind. It really created a rather... romantic atmosphere that you found yourself taking mental images of. You turn to Akaashi, who moved to the side of the sidewalk closest to the street without you even realizing, to comment on the ambiance, but noticed that the umbrella is primarily covering you and his outermost shoulder was getting wet.

"Kei, stand a bit closer. Your shoulder is getting wet."

Akaashi Keiji

"Oh it's ok. I don't really mind."

"But I do."

You tug on the hem of his sleeve and pull him closer, your shoulders now touching. As you do, a gust of wind blows through the two of you and you reflexively turn your head in toward his shoulder. You feel Akaashi stiffen momentarily before relaxing and moving closer to you, your cheek now resting on his chest.

Akaashi Keiji

"You ok?"

"Y-yeah. Sorry, I didn't want the dust to get in my eyes."

Akaashi Keiji

"Don't worry about it. You can... get closer if you want."

He offers the arm that is carrying the umbrella with a gentle smile. As you looked into his cerulean eyes, glistening even under the haze, you felt the blood rise to your cheeks at his endearing expression. You look away shyly as you slip your arm through his and tuck yourself into his side. He stares straight ahead, worried that you'll notice his flustered expression as he tightens his grip on the umbrella.

Akaashi Keiji

Be cool.

He notices, from the corner of his eye, the way you kept clenching and unclenching your fist. It was a cute habit that you only did when your hands were so cold you couldn't feel them. You tried to hide your small fist in the pocket of the hoodie, and stifled a shiver as you used his shoulder to block the wind. The next level was- yep- he subtly looked over at you to see a pinkish hue rise to the tip of your nose. You were definitely cold, and he found it more adorable than he should. Akaashi digs around in his pocket for the hand warmer that he knew that you would need in this weather. But as he did, he felt multiple, aggressive buzzes on his phone. You must have gotten the same notification because you pulled out your phone in unison.

He chuckles.

He gently clasps the back of your hand with his warm palm and you feel the cold dissipate almost instantly. Without breaking contact, he traces his fingers across the back of your hand to the front, pressing the heat pack into your palm and using his fingers to close yours around it. He smiles and puts his palm on the back of your head, rubbing it affectionately.

Akaashi Keiji

"I don't want you to get sick, so let's pass through the liberal arts buildings. It's warmer inside and we can cut across the quad."

"O-oh. Yeah sure. Thanks Kei."

Akaashi Keiji

"Anytime."

As the two of you walk arm and arm into the nearest building, you wonder if the overwhelming heat you suddenly feel is from the hand warmer or what just transpired. Because your feverishly beating heart is telling you otherwise.
