Moon Shadow

Fear grips the neighborhood as another young woman is reported missing.

Celeste stares at the reflection of the full moon on the darkened laptop screen as the news feed continues.

Holly Hamada, age 20, was last seen walking her dog in front of an apartment complex.

She grabs her phone from her back pocket. A search of nearby pet-friendly apartments yields a single result.

Investigators say her disappearance is linked to three other missing women, all of whom are in their late teens to early twenties; of Asian descent; around 5'1'' to 5'3''; and has brown eyes and black hair.

She replaces her phone in her pocket, pulls on a thin jacket, and heads out.

The crisp air hits her face as soon as she steps out of the building. The streetlights cast eerie shadows on the empty road as she heads east.

With each step, she recounts the information she has collected over the last two weeks, ever since the first woman went missing: clues hidden at each of the locations where the women were last seen. Clues left for her alone.

The last one she had found: a torn page from Romeo and Juliet pinned to the community board in the public library.

But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?

The line circles in her mind.

Celeste cuts off her thoughts as she faces the small complex surrounded by lush shrubs. The gravel crunches beneath her black running shoes. All parking spots in the front are taken except for two. She begins with the car on the right end of the row, crouching, scanning the ground and all crevices. She then runs her hands over the tires and undercarriage as far inward as her arms can reach.

After examining four cars, she approaches the first empty stall. To her right, she sees a shrub, and her eyes stop at the snapped branches on the side closest to her. She drops to her knees and digs into the dirt directly below the broken ends until she touches a thin, hard object.

A house key.

A mirror. A poster with an eye inside the sun. Juliet's window. This key.

She jumps up and runs back from where she came, past her building, around the corner to the street visible from her apartment. A direct sight line from her window, the fourth window from the left on the third floor, to the house on the corner.

The key fits smoothly into the lock. Leaving the door wide open behind her, she walks into the dark foyer. The light from outside provides enough illumination as she walks further into the living room, where four unconscious women are bound to chairs and placed in the four cardinal directions.

A tall figure emerges from the black kitchen.

"I've been waiting for you."

"How did you find me?" she asks, keeping her voice low and her focus on his golden eyes.

"You should know by now, my dear moon. I will always find you."
