Chapter 6
The girls were in the "Great Hall" again and Dani could pick up snippets of a conversation Ryker was having with Ben and Tim. "I don't even know any words in my native language, yet I apparently have an accent!" Ryker was saying and laughing as he did. Dani had completely forgotten about Ryker's accent. Though, now that she thought about it, his voice did have a sort of Dutch-ish flair to it. Whether or not he was Dutch, she did not know. Ryker also spoke perfect English, no word order problems, no concord problems, no problems with pronunciation except maybe rolling r's every so often. Ryker pronounced his name "Rye-kurr" not like something else like "Rake-er". Ryker even looked English. Ryker then glanced at her and she fought an urge to look away. Ryker smiled and gave her wink before quickly proceeding to look away, rubbing his cheek and looking down at the tortilla in front of him. Kayla pushed past Dani and watched the other table. She was casting a shadow over Dani's plate of nachos. Dani just looked like she didn't know what to do. Catherine had some Mexican-looking soup in front of her. Dani decided to look over at Ryker's table again. Ben and Tim had an undecipherable expression on their faces and Ryker was giving them a confused look. Then they whispered something in his ear making Ryker visibly blush. Dani found the whole situation funny and she giggled. The reason she found it funny was because Ryker didn't blush very often so, whatever they'd said must've made him really embarrassed. She returned to her plate of nachos, and arranged the triangular-shaped chips into a face before proceeding to eat them. Kayla had also ordered herself some nachos but with a rust-coloured dip. She was eating her nachos while whispering to herself. Probably more evidence for her garbage theories, Dani thought, smiling. "No! I-I don't!" Ryker's reply to the boys snapped her back to reality. How cute, he's denying something. Dani smiled. She didn't bother to wonder what he was denying though. That was Ryker's business. She walked up to their table.
"Ryker, I got a part." She said nonchalantly. Ryker looked up at her, he was smiling.
"You did?" He looked away for a few seconds. He passed her a piece of paper. "I knew you would! What part?" Ryker said in his normal tone. The paper said, Go D.Dog! Uh... Well D.Wolf!
"Female lead," she replied and Ryker looked so surprised he'd might've fallen off his chair at that point.
"F-Female lead?!" He said, sounding amazed. "That's a pretty hard part to get. I'm the male lead...... Anywaaaay~ What did she tell you?" Dani stopped. What did she tell me? I've forgotten!
"Uh... Um.... That I was a great performer, maybe... A little shy?" She lied.
"You're lying," he mused, giving her a look. "You forgot didn't you?" All Dani could do was nod. How did I know I was lying? "You really need to get lessons in lying," he said. "It's quite easy to figure out you were lying."
"How?"
"Look it up. There are certain.... 'Signs' of a lying person. You can call them what you want."
"Do you get lessons in lying, Ryk?" Ben chirped causing Ryker to glare at him. "'Cause, oh boy, you need them." Ryker had looked down at the ground as if the words had some truth to them. His eyes dark eyes were glancing up and down.
"So, anyway," Ryker said, glancing back at Ben and Tim. "I'm happy you got a part. And we don't even know what the play is yet!" His hands had gone up so that his body formed a star shape. His enthusiasm seemed dulled though, like Ben's comment had affected him. He also seemed more withdrawn. "She never tells what the freaking play is until she decides to."
"Mrs.Ophelia seems like a hard teacher," Dani said, secretly knowing how her aunt was. Ryker brightened considerably.
"But now that you're in the play, maybe she'll at least let us have breaks..." Ryker seemed annoyed by that. Catherine came up to them.
"Sorry to break this wonderful convo, but the period ended," she said. Ryker sighed next to Dani. He seemed relieved.
"Great, I'm going to my dorm," he turned to Ben and Tim. "Don't come I need to think something over." Dani nodded and had completely missed the fact he'd been holding her hand. Her hand felt warm, and she blushed softly. He's such a sweetheart.. Dani decided to go to her dorm as well. Catherine followed her in.
"Dani I have something to confess," Catherine murmured as she chose a book from the book shelf.
"And that's what?"
"I think I'm starting to believe Kayla's garbage theories." Though she had a flat expression on her face, Dani was blushing. Well, maybe... But they're still garbage.
