Chapter Three

"Come on, Baudelaire's!" called the voice of Captain Widdershins, "He who hesitates is lost! Aye! I hope you haven't forgotten my personal philosophy! Aye!"

"Or she," Fiona quickly added on to her stepfather's philosophy as she usually did when he forgot about it.

     "Aye!" The Captain agreed.

"Violet, I'm supposed to show you and Klaus the coastal shelf," Fiona informed them.

"What about Beatrice and I?" Sunny asked, cradling the young child.

"Isadora is going to babysit Beatrice, but you get to help with breakfast, Sunny," Friday said, barging into their hut. The siblings quickly got ready for the day- they had plenty of things from their boat still with them. Sunny followed Friday to the boat, and together they got all the leftover food from the Baudelaire's voyage and brought it over to the large wooden table. Suddenly, Sunny gasped and ran back towards the boat.

"Sunny! Where are you going?!" Sadie yelled.

"Be right back!" Sunny shouted over her shoulder. She ran to the edge of the island, where the boat she and her siblings had arrived and left the old island on stayed. She rummaged through, an expression which here means, "To search through thoroughly, often turning things upside down in a frenzied manner." She found what she was looking for and raced back over to the table.

"Friday!" She shouted, holding up her whisk that the child had given her over a year ago. When Friday saw it, she just stared at it in awe.

"You still have that?" She asked, surprised. Sunny nodded and gave her a wide smile. Sunny walked right up to the table to examine the food she had to make something for all of them.

"What a handy utensil!" Phil commented, admiring the whisk.

"Well, what do you think we should prepare?" Friday asked Sunny, gesturing to what they had available foodwise.

"Fruit salad!" Sunny exclaimed, and with that she got started.

As that event was taking place, Violet and Klaus were following Fiona, Quigley, and Duncan to the coastal shelf. Violet was already tying up her hair with her long purple ribbon she had used so many times before.

"We leave most of the things here, since they really aren't of any use to us," Quigley said, "The only things we usually take are papers, clothes, books, and food. Though I'm sure Violet could invent almost anything from these items." And anyone could tell that Violet took that as a challenge by the sheer look of determination on her face.

You should never go up to a random place that has bunches of clutter, a word which here means, "Junk," and search through it, for two reasons. One, if it is indeed a dump, there may be dangerous chemicals, and two, you are not one of the Baudelaire siblings.

Violet was thankful to still be Violet Baudelaire, and for many reasons, mostly involving Count Olaf's evil plans. There were many chances of her name being changed; there was the time she was almost married to him, which would have meant she would have been (Countess) Violet Olaf; there was the time when she was almost about to become 'Violet Sham'; then the countless times she and her siblings would have been dead, or would have been claimed dead by Count Olaf, if they hadn't gone through piles of things, like they were doing now.

Now, like Friday had said, the coastal shelf was nothing like the one back on the old island, but it was a decent size, a phrase which here means "Fairly large," and Violet immediately began scanning the  area for materials to make an invention or two to make life simpler. Meanwhile, Klaus was scanning the area for large pieces of wood, because he figured his sister was thinking of inventions to safely and successfully get all of them back to civilization.

Violet turned to her younger brother and her friends. "Can you help me carry some stuff back?" She asked, "I only need those rudders, a bunch (A word which here means "A whole lot of them") of those wires, and a few large sheets of scrap metal, to make something like a water filtration system." Everyone nodded and grabbed some of what Violet needed. After she herself had picked up two large metal sheets, they headed back to the mainland so Violet could get inventing. "Wait," Violet said, stopping suddenly, "Do you already have fresh water?" Duncan and Fiona shook their heads.

"Well, we had some water left over from the hot air balloon, but after it ran out, we had to resort to coconut milk," Duncan explained.

"Fresh water would be very nice," Fiona voiced. Then Klaus spoke the words he had been urging to ever since he heard books had washed up on its shores.

"How many books do you have here? Are any of them readable? What kind of books are they? Are they interesting?" The word's flooded out of Klaus's mouth all at once.

"Well," Fiona answered quickly, "Alotyesallsortsandsometimes, yes," she smiled at Klaus. "Come on, I'll show you them," Fiona offered. She turned on her heel and he followed her, while Quigley, Duncan and Violet lagged behind.

"Well, should we get back to the island?" Violet asked hesitantly, "I'm looking forward to trying to make another one of these, with less advanced materials. I always love a challenge."

"I know you do," Quigley said, "I can't wait to watch you make an invention. This is my first, not including the one you made back at the Mortmain Mountains."

Duncan, taking the hint, walked ahead of the two, just out of earshot.

They began walking, catching up with each other the whole way, just like normal people would- not that either of their lives were normal. No, no one on this islands lives had been normal for a long time.

A/N: Oh my gosh I'm laughing so hard right now at the name suggestions! Widdershins becomes sidewinders, and Isadora becomes Salvadora!!!!!!!
