Chapter Four

Violet quickly and quietly came up with a plan to build a water filtration system, and carried her plan out, while the others watched in awe. (This did not include Sunny, who was still cooking, nor Fiona and Klaus, as both were still at the mini library.)

"There," Violet said, smiling faintly, "The water filtration system is done. Now all we have to do is test it, and since I made it, I think I should try it first, to make sure it's safe."

"No," Duncan argued, "I'll try it!"

     "No, I will," Isadora volunteered.

"Aye! I will!" Captain Widdershins offered. All of a sudden, everyone was clambering towards the machine, saying they would be the first to try it. Violet, getting slightly claustrophobic, screamed quite loudly,

"Stop! I will, and that's final!" Everyone stopped in their tracks, and, realizing what they had been doing, stepped away.

"I'll get some water," Omeros said. He ran off in the direction of the ocean. While they waited, Fiona and Klaus came back. Fiona was smiling shyly. Isadora's face held a disgruntled look, a phrase which here means, "displeased at the fact that Klaus and Fiona were walking back together."

Omeros eventually came back, saying it took a while because he couldn't find a bucket to put the water in. Violet slowly poured the water into the new machine. Everyone heard the clunk of the machine working, and Violet scooped a handful up from the tray at the bottom, and brought it up to her mouth.

"The water is fine!" She announced, grinning. Everyone eventually got to drink some, and suddenly Sunny raced over. She was the only one who had not come over to the mechanical device yet.

"Breakfast is ready!" The young girl exclaimed, but then stopped in her tracks as she saw what Violet had made.

"I've just invented a water filtration system, Sunny," The eldest Baudelaire explained, "So you can cook things that need water." Sunny broke into a grin and ran to hug her sister.

"Thank you thank you thank you!" She exclaimed. "Come on! Like I said, breakfast is ready!" Everyone followed her back to the table. Sunny had prepared a fruit salad, with coconut milk to drink. The fruit salad had most fruits known to man- from apples to persimmons.

Isadora brightened slightly, spotting some cherries in the mix.

The islanders quietly chatted about what the real world could possibly be like, since most of them hadn't been to the mainland in quite some time, or they hadn't been at all. Friday, Sadie, and Jonah were the three that hadn't been there in the history of ever, which stretches back quite far. The trio was gossiping to each other in hushed whispers.

"Maybe everything is made of metal!" Sadie exclaimed.

"Or maybe there are floating automobiles! (He had been taught that word by Duncan)" Jonah crowed.

"Be serious guys!" Friday interjected. "It's gonna be way better than that!"

The rest of them exchanged looks- that all clearly read as: They had no idea of knowing what was going on, either. For all they knew, the things that the others were talking about were true. They silently thought of what could have happened in the time they had been gone.

Violet wondered what had happened to inventing while she was gone. Had a robot taken her place and was building something just like she did?

Klaus wondered what had happened to the literary section of the world. Had any new discoveries been made? What sort of things had people been recently writing?

Sunny wondered about the fortune they had to inherit, and what Mr. Poe was thinking. What if he thinks we're dead?

Beatrice was too busy stuffing her face in the fruit bowl to really think. Of course, no one but themselves knew what they were thinking.

For example, the Quagmires were also wondering about financial trouble back at the main land.

Fiona was wondering about the Medusoid Mycelium; while her stepfather was wondering what had happened to the QueeQueg.

But the question looming in everyone's minds was, "How are we going to survive there?"

The next morning the Baudelaires had some questions for their fellow islanders.

"Um," Klaus started, "We have some questions." Everyone stopped talking and immediately looked in their direction. The Baudelaires shared an uncomfortable glance.

"Well, we were wondering where some people were," Violet said halfheartedly. Sunny opened her mouth, and without, like her siblings, looking at Captain Widdershins and Fiona.

"Like Fernald and Hank," The youngest Baudelaire continued.

"Aye?" Captain Widdershins said, facing Fiona, "You found Fernald? Aye?"

"Yes, stepfather, I did," Fiona answered quietly.

"But, who is Hank? The other volunteers never mentioned him did they, Aye?"  The Captain said, gesturing to the Quagmires.

"He- he drowned," Isadora admitted sadly.

The table quickly went silent, and everyone finished their food. All of a sudden, Friday broke that silence.

"If we're going to leave, I think we should leave soon, before treachery washes up on these shores," she said, eyes widening suddenly. Everyone turned around quickly to see what she was staring at.

The two white-powdered face woman were walking towards the group, looking quite embarrassed.

"Hello, Baudelaires," The first one spoke softly, "Non multo, tempore videre."

"Non multo, tempore videre" Is not likely to mean much to you if you are not a Latin translator. For those of you that are, I am sorry to inform you that I must translate it for the people who are not familiar in your profession. Here, this phrase means, "Long time no see." Like most of you, everyone was not familiar with Latin phrases- with the exception of Klaus. He spoke back,

     "Diu non videre, tamen."

This, like the other phrase above, is not likely to mean much to you if you are not Latin translator, so, likewise, I must also add in a translation for those of you who don't speak Latin: Long time, no see, indeed.

"Well, what are we waiting for?" Friday asked impatiently, "We need to get wood now, before a storm hits and blows us all away!"

"Can that happen?" Sunny asked worriedly, biting her lip. The youngest Baudelaire had nearly all her teeth by now, but her four first teeth were still unusually large and sharp.

"I think it can," Ariel answered, though she looked quite unsure. Then the table went silent, while the two women took some fruit. When everyone was completely full, they headed off to the opposite side of the island. There they gathered all of the wood they thought they would need to hold all of the people on the island. This was the calmest any of them had felt in a long time. Slowly over the days, they finished the boat. Finally they deemed the boat stable enough to sail out on the sea.

Little did they know that those days would be some of their last days of calm.

AUTHORS NOTE ATTENTION!!! CHAPTER FIVE HAS BEEN DELETED, AND COMBINED WITH NUMBER FOUR!!! There are TWO reasons for that!!! The first, the chapter was too short :l. The second, if they were separate, the story would take more than 13 chapters.
