6. That Thing Called Jealousy
Kyungsoo was an excellent and very thorough tour guide. He showed Chanyeol all over the company, even taking him to floors and departments that would never require his presence. He was a talktive and carefree person when Chanyeol asked him questions; and reserved and solemn when they walked in silence. He was two completely different people wrapped inside one body; like two side of the same coin.
Chanyeol found him fascinating; and when they talked, he hung on every word; and when silence hung over them, he studied his face to figure out what he was thinking. He was complex and an open book at the same time; he was easier to known then Baekhyun, and Chanyeol couldn't help himself from wanting to learn more.
They were nearing the end of their tour, and the last place on the viewing was the cafeteria, that had been strategically planned to be the closing event for the tour.
Kyungsoo lead the way into the cafeteria as he asked, "Are you hungry, Chanyeol? I was wanting to grab a quick breakfast item before returning to my cubicle. How about you, do you want anything?"
Chanyeol waved away his offer as he said, "No thanks, I'm going to head back to my post before Mr. Byun finds a reason to fire me . . ."
Kyungsoo pursed his lips and quietly mused, "You don't like him very much, do you?" Kyungsoo chuckled humorlessly before muttering, "It's okay if you don't want to admit it, but just so you know, not many of us like him either. He can be a real....asshole, at times," Kyungsoo said.
"You know, I've been here for three years now, and I don't think I've ever seen him smile." Kyungsoo laughed humorlessly. "I kind of feel bad, you know . . . Hmm, oh well, I guess." He shrugged as he got his food and paid for it.
"Do you know why he's like that?" Chanyeol asked.
Kyungsoo took a bit of his breakfast burrito, his brow furrowed in thought as he chewed. He swallowed and wiped his mouth before saying, "A year ago he use to be different, but then he changed and everyone thought it was because he had been in love, and the rumor is he was dumped and never fully recovered from the heartbreak." Kyungsoo trailed off with a shrug before muttering, "But I'm probably wrong."
Chanyeol nodded. "Yeah, maybe . . ."

Days passed, everyone one of them the same; every one of them sucking him in deeper. Park Chanyeol was screwed.
Chanyeol sat at his desk, a smaller and less attractive version of he's bosses. A headache had already begun to brew and the two Advils and break room coffee hadn't done a thing to soothe the pain. Chanyeol sighed and rubbed his temples as he just continued his repetitive task of reviewing client files.
It was growing closer to lunch time —- Chanyeol counted the minutes —- when a person slide into his desk and a hand darted out to grab his stress ball. Chanyeol jumped in surprise as his eyes shot up to find his co-worker, Do Kyungsoo, perched on the edge of his desk, the redrubber stress ball in his hand adorned with a flirtatious smile.
Chanyeol blinked up at him and stammered, "Kyung–Kyungsoo, hey, it's been awhile."
Kyungsoo laughed. "Yeah, it has, and I know just who to blame for that!" Kyungsoo rolled his eyes. "Anyway, I came by to ask you something."
"Okay?"
"Have lunch with me?"
Chanyeol's eyes widened even more and he was pretty sure his mouth dropped open. "Wh–what? You want to have lunch, as in . . . a date?"
Kyungsoo laughed again and waved his hand as he nonchalantly replied, "Chanyeol, it would only be a work lunch. I haven't noticed you in the cafeteria, so I thought . . . maybe you'd want some company? What do you say?"
Chanyeol smiled and pluked the ball from Kyungsoo's hand as he replied, "I'd like that, just give me a moment to file everything away, and I'll meet you in the cafeteria."
Kyungsoo's smiled too and hopped off Chanyeol's desk as he chirped, "See you!"
Chanyeol softly chuckled to himself as he watched Kyungsoo's figure disappear into an elevator. He couldn't deny his excitement as he quickly gathered together his things. Chanyeol kept thinking that maybe having lunch, even if it was only a work lunch, would be a good way for him to move on from Baekhyun. It was pathetic really, and Chanyeol hated to admit it, but he liked Baekhyun. So maybe having lunch with someone else could erase those memories from that night?
He had nearly made it to the elevator when an all too familiar, gut twitching voice called, "Chanyeol, I need to speak with you!"
Chanyeol exhaled heavily before turning around as he asked, "Yes, Mr. Byun, what is it?"
Chanyeol made the mistake of meeting Mr. Byun's gaze, that was sharp and a beautiful melted chocolate color. Chanyeol felt himself slipping into his intense stare, and he began to fear he wouldn't be able to crawl back out. But then he remembered Kyungsoo's kind offer that he join him for lunch, and little by little he managed to dig himself out of the trance Baekhyun had casted over him.
He snapped back to the present when Mr. Byun said, "Mr. Park, if you would please, join me in my office?" The offer sounded friendly enough, but Chanyeol knew refusual wasn't optional as he curtly nodded before shouldering pass Mr. Byun into his office. As he walked pass Mr. Byun, his breathy voice commanded, "Take a seat."
Chanyeol gulped as he sat down in one of the plush leather chairs directly positioned in front of Mr. Byun's desk. Mr. Byun closed his office door with a deafening click before perching on the edge of his desk in front of Chanyeol. Their gazes locked, and it took all of Chanyeol's strength to control his breathing so he didn't suddenly begin to hyperventilate. His efforts were made even more difficult when Mr. Byun leaned forward so close his lips were nearly touching Chanyeol's ear, when he whispered, "Mr. Park, do you have plans for lunch?"
Chanyeol tried to control his reaction, but when he spoke in reply his voice cracked, and then his whole demeanor began to crumble in on itself and that one strangled word hung in the air between them; bloated and ready to burst.
"Yes."
A slow smile began to form across Baekhyun's lips as he causally replied, "Oh, do you now? Are you by any chance having lunch with....Do Kyungsoo?"
Chanyeol's breathing hitched, and he felt his ears grow hot as a sly smile began to form on Baekhyun's lips. And then he was leaning forward once again, his lips brushing across Chanyeol's already blush-tipped ear as he whispered, "Sorry, Chanyeol, but I have a strict policy against my employees getting involved with each other romantically. You see, it create tension and jealousy in the work environment when things get too out of control. Do you understand what I'm telling you?"
Chanyeol nodded, and to his surprise, his voice came out strong and steady when he replied, "Yes, Mr. Byun, I understand completely. And I also understand that me, being your employee, means we should also refrain from lunch together. Wouldn't you agree?"
Baekhyun leaned away from Chanyeol as his eyes scrutinized his face, taking note of every muscle twitch and the coloring of his skin, and his eyes narrowed. Chanyeol merely stared back, his thoughts hidden behind an impenetrable mask.
Baekhyun pursed his lips and crossed his legs as he stood up from his desk, and began to slowly walk around it as he replied, "You're right, Mr. Park, lunch would be inappropriate. And it would also be inappropriate of you to have lunch with anyone else....in my company, that is."
Chanyeol couldn't help his condescending laugh, he heard what Baekhyun was really saying and he was being completely hypocritical and out of line. Chanyeol smiled thinly as he replied, "Mr. Byun, with all do respect, it is none of your business who I date outside of this building. Here I may be someone you think you can control and push around, but you're wrong and I will have lunch with whoever I please! And if you want to fire me for insubordination, please feel free to do so, because I know you can't legally forbid me from dating or having lunch with another one of your employees. The every idea is ludicrous!" Chanyeol yelled.
Baekhyun didn't speak for a few minutes, his lips remained pursed as he stared Chanyeol down, who simply refused to back down. And the longer Baekhyun willed him to submit, the more exhausted he became when he didn't. With a heavy sigh, Baekhyun pulled out his chair and took a seat as he muttered, "You are dismissed now, Mr. Park."
Chanyeol smiled thinly in reply and muttered, "Thank you, Mr. Byun," before leaving the room and closing the door behind him.
The echo of the closing door vibrating inside Baekhyun's head, and squeezing his eyes closed he banged his fist down on his desk in frustration before briskly jumping to his feet. He gritted his teeth and went to his closet, pulling out his coat and putting it on as he angrily muttered, "What an insufferable and annoying man, you are Park Chanyeol. Fuck you for affecting me."
Baekhyun exhaled heavily through his nose before pulling his office door open and walking to the elevator. He emailed his schedule coordinator and told them to cancel the rest of his meetings for the day, and gave the excuse of being too unwell to continue working. Once that was all cleared away and his mind was empty of thought, Park Chanyeol began to invade his consciousness again. Baekhyun huffed and gritted his teeth as he couldn't help from being angry all over again.
He kept thinking about Do Kyungsoo, an employee he had never spared a second thought until now —- not until he began to smile and charm his way into Chanyeol's life. But why did it matter so much?
Baekhyun has never felt this level of possessive jealousy before, even with all his past relationships he had never wanted to hurt someone as much as he wanted to hurt Kyungsoo for stealing Chanyeol's attention. It was pity and childish of him, but he couldn't help his sudden new desires.
When he had heard Kyungsoo ask Chanyeol to lunch, all he could think was, "Chanyeol's mine," and even now he couldn't shake the possessiveness. The thought of Chanyeol spending any length of time with Kyungsoo filled him with anger and that new sense of all-consuming jealousy. And instead of saying something to persuade Chanyeol not to have lunch with Kyungsoo, he had decided to forbid any interaction between the two, which only made Baekhyun fear he had pushed Chanyeol closer into Kyungsoo's axis and further away from his own. And logically, no matter how much Baekhyun wished he could deny it, there was simply nothing he could do about the matter. He would just have to wait and be patient, two terms that were not in his vocabulary.
Baekhyun had to find something to do to keep the thought of Chanyeol and Kyungsoo out of his head, and two solutions instantly came to mind. He had to get out and have a little fun of his own; he had to release some of the pent-up sexual need that has been building inside him ever since that night he spent with Chanyeol. And maybe it would be good for him, because there was the big possiblity that if he got someone beneath him, he would forget about that big eared, two left footed fool.
