Chapter 4

Kiara

"Miss Sky?"

Never have I seen one with so much audacity in my entire life, if I had the means David Russel would be behind bars at that moment. I was embarrassed in front of other good-looking men and he didn't just stop there, he went ahead to scold me like he was talking to a five-year-old and he was so fast, I couldn't even make out a proper response before he took me over, correction, dragged me over to a room and made me wait there till his stupid meeting would be over.

"Miss Sky?"

Guess what? The dumb thing ended in only like what? Five minutes or so. I didn't even have to wait long, it's almost as if I wouldn't have even met the conversation if my impatient self could've waited ten minutes. He then asked one of his staff that I just never happened to meet when I walked in to attend to me and I've been sitting here ever since, with popcorn and a cold glass of cola.

Yes, I ate both even in my anger.

"Miss Sky?"

I was snapped back to reality by the young man David had kept watching me ever since he practically dragged me out of the passageway. So unfair a guy so calm like him would work for a man like David, this guy deserves a nice boss in a five star hotel.

"What are you miss-skying all about?"

"You said you wanted to watch another movie"

I looked at the huge screen attached to the wall, I'd been staring at the screen without paying any attention to the movie itself, mostly because I had other important things in mind. Ones that involved throwing a bulky man off a cliff.

"You don't deserve to be here, you know"

"Sorry?"

"You don't deserve to run around for a man like him, you look like you should be working in a five-star hotel for better people"

"Mr Russel doesn't like his staff whispering around about him so I'd assume we never had this conversation."

"Course he doesn't like his staff talking about him but it's not like we're going to tell him"

"Miss Sky_"

"Come on, I'm sure you know don't want to be here "

"I think you're mistaken"

"He made you look squeaky clean, didn't he? That's why you look like a third grader on a school morning"

"This is the nature of my job Miss Sky and Mr Russel does not permit uncleanliness. It's a really good trait if you look at it"

"Mr. Russel this, Mr. Russel that, when will it ever end?"

"When I retire I guess, Mr Russel is my employer"

"You sound like a robot. Besides, you wanna work here for the rest of your life? That's unacceptable"

I couldn't even spend two good days with this man and here's this dude planning out his entire life running around for this snobby nobody. The only thing keeping me is the havoc on the internet about me and also the free stuff. I mean, everyone likes free stuff.

It's not like I would have caviar on almost every meal if it was up to me.

"It is not, I'm happy with my decision and I hope you'll be happy with your new job too once you learn to accept Mr Russell. And for the record, he owns the five-star restaurants"

That would have ended the unnecessary conversation but whatever, it's not like this guy's bent on ever leaving here. He left the room and once again, I was by myself in what felt like an empty home. I lived alone in a beat-up apartment too but the sound of Mrs Smith and her kids next door and the new neighbors above me was enough noise to keep my sanity. Even when I couldn't get anything done on time, at least it made me feel like I wasn't alone.

On the other hand, I wonder how I would be able to live with this. It's almost like I wasn't even his assistant, I was just something to make people believe we weren't married or dating or whatever the internet is carrying around. If it wasn't for the pay and free stuff, I would've gone back to my coffee shop.

Also, the men I saw with him. There was something more than just an ordinary meeting and I could just feel it. The thought came creeping up my neck now and then, I couldn't just drop the topic. I tried searching for them online. I didn't know any of their names, neither had I seen them on any papers so I searched for David himself and looked at a series of images in hopes of finding at least one. Nothing, I found nothing.

Not a single one of them. I'd seen him with other men that looked quite influential as well and I'd seen a couple of his friends but nothing about these dudes. There could be more about it and I could mind my business but no, what's the fun in that?

"We're leaving for the airport in an hour, is there anything you need Walter to get from the hotel?"

David walked in looking like he just had a shower, with hair slightly damp, a blue shirt hugging his body, and black pants. As official as always.

Now to the topic at hand, this man leaves me here for hours, pops out of nowhere, and tells me we have a flight in an hour. Could this day get any worse? So you're telling me I had an opportunity at a beach house this elegant and I wouldn't even feel the rough sand beneath my feet?

"You realize you left me sitting here for hours"

He looked down at the watch secured around his wrist and said "It's just been forty-five minutes"

"Forty-five minutes of sitting here and doing nothing"

"And since when did doing nothing become a problem? You did nothing at the coffee shop when I walked in last night and it didn't kill you"

Well, I wasn't doing anything important. I was thinking of how much I'd embarrassed myself at your dumb interview but my ego wouldn't let me spit those words out.

"It becomes a problem now that I'm your assistant, I should be responding to emails and stuff"

"You're barely capable of sitting on your own and you want to respond to my emails?"

"You know what, forget we even had this conversation. Who are those men?"

Something about him changed when I said those words and it didn't last for long. I'd seen his eyes come up to meet mine for a split second and his lips formed a thin line, after which he masked it up with his usual calm expression. Now I'm no psychologist but it doesn't take Einstein to see that.

"Next time you want into my meeting uninvited, I'll have you back to your two hundred dollar apartment"

This one time I didn't have a reply to give, I just sat there staring at him thinking of something to say. I mean, it's not like he was at fault for anything, I walked in intentionally by myself and now my barely twenty-four-hour-old job is at risk. For the record, my apartment is worth a lot more than two hundred dollars.

And you don't need to know the price, mind your own business.

"No need to be so rude" I muttered "So about the flight?"

"Yes, there's this party_"

"Party?" I repeated "Party? Are you serious?"

"You don't look like one who doesn't like partying"

"Well duh, who doesn't like parties? The only problem is that you're putting me among rich people"

"I'll introduce you as my assistant and if you learn to close your mouth for a few hours, I'm sure you'll go through it without getting in trouble"

"And if I get in trouble?"

He glanced up at me, his eyebrows furrowed like I'd just said the dumbest thing anyone could say "Well do you plan on getting in trouble? They'll be cameras and paparazzi, Kiara. Acting like an adult for a few hours wouldn't kill you"

"What about my family? My friends? You expect me to leave it all for some dumb party?" Actually yes, I'm more than glad to leave this garbage party but anything to make him frustrated would be enough payback. The only thing that could pull me back was my sister and we never spoke to each other besides through texts and calls, a few days trip wouldn't hurt.

"You separated from your family once you left high school and you're fighting for full custody of your sister, one you've not seen for five years if I'm correct"
