It was raining cats and dogs outside. I was sitting in the cafe, waiting for my friend to show up. She was never late before, but that day she decided to make me wait. For an hour I sat there like an idiot, looking at people coming in, imagining that they were my friend and how I would pour my rage out at her to show her that I was tremendously upset. Another 30 minutes passed and my anger turned into action, I called her. Weirdly enough, she did not pick up. I texted her, no answers. I pulled out my book and started reading so that I could suppress this worry that was burning my chest. After two lines, I dropped the book. What if something had happened to her? A car accident? What if the street was so slippery that she slipped, hit her head on the road and passed out? What if she had been kidnapped? All these scenarios stuck in my head, and I pulled out my phone again. I was calling her number when there came a call. It was her! I sighed, feeling more relieved than ever, prepared my angry voice and picked up.
"Where are you? It's been almost 2 hours!"
"Excuse me, I saw your number on the Recent Call List of this phone. The owner of this phone is currently in the hospital. Can you please come?"
Hospital? Why was she in the hospital? My heart clenched, I grabbed my bag and ran out of the cafe.
The taxi ride was 30 minutes, but it felt like hours to me.
"Would you mind speeding up? I am in a rush."
"Young lady, that is not how traffic jams work."
Finally the taxi pulled over at the hospital. I rushed inside the emergency room, just to see my friend lying there unconscious. People screamed into each other's faces, but inside me was dead silence. I walked up to her, answering the doctor's questions without hearing it. Like a robot.
"What happened?"
Finally I could let out a few words. Well, two words. And a question mark.
"A neighbor found her lying unconscious on the floor. She was holding a knife and there are cuts all over her wrist, as you can see. She has lost too much blood and she needs blood transfusion, but we don't have any blood of her type ready at the hospital. What is your blood type? Because...."
I did not understand anything he said after that. Whatever my blood type was, we didn't match. She passed away that night.
