Chapter Eleven

"Lonnie!" I called as we reached her hill den. I heard the pattering of little paws before a tiny black and grey form appeared, leaping off of the den ledge and ramming right into me while screaming, "Mommy!" I tumbled back in surprise with Katy on my chest. Luckily, everyone jumped back before I fell into them. "Katy!" I yelled. "Weren't you with Leo's mom?"

Katy nodded her little black head, her bright orange birthmarks gleaming in the light. "Grandma Grace dropped me off with Auntie Lonnie when she had to go out with some of her friends," she said in a cute, high-pitched voice. Why she calls Lonnie her aunt when she is really her grandmother, I have no idea.

Leo nudged Katy's side, causing her to slide off of my chest. I stood back up and looked down as Katy darted between my legs. I felt her tiny body tremble in what I figured was fear. "What's wrong, Katy?" I asked.

And those hazel eyes of hers, those sweet hazel brown eyes filled with confusion and fear. I followed her gaze until they rested on my family.

"Mommy, who are they?" She whispered in a shaky voice. "They smell like the bad wolves."

"What's going on out here?" A voice called. I looked over my shoulder to see Lonnie padding out of the den. Suddenly, she froze as she saw the foreign wolves. Slowly, her lips pulled back into a snarl. "Kate..." she growled.

My expression hardened, and I moved to stand protectively in front of my family.

Lonnie looked so betrayed. In a small voice, she tried to call my name, "Kate?"

My eyes softened, and I came up to Lonnie to lick her muzzle and nuzzle her head. "Lonnie...it's okay," I said gently as I stared into her eyes. "I would never betray you, I promise."

"Mommy?" Katy called from her spot at my feet. "Why does that one look like you?" She asked, still terrified by the strangers.

I licked the top of her head, and went to stand by my mother. I touched my nose to the side of her face before I turned back to the two confused wolves with a smile. "Lonnie, Katy, meet my mother, Hannah."

A smile slowly grew on Katy's face until her eyes were shining and her whole body was shaking in excitement. "You found your mommy, mommy!" She yelled, running up to me. I laughed at her.

"Mommy?" My mother asked with a tilt of her head.

I smiled. "Yes, this is my daughter, Katy. She's a runt that I found her abandoned in the Barren Desert where I was abandoned. And so I adopted her as my own just as Lonnie did for me." I looked back at Lonnie with a grateful smile while Katy went over to play with Bella who was just itching to jump around.

But when I looked back at her, I didn't see happiness or relief. Nothing even close. I saw fear, sadness, and rage. Lonnie's eyes were wide, her ears almost flat against her head, her legs slightly spread apart, and her tail drooping. "Lonnie? What's wrong?" I padded up to her, but she just growled at me. In surprise, I backed up, with my whole body showing my fear. "Lonnie?" I whispered.

I heard a deep growl as Leo came to stand beside me. "Lonnie, stop it," he said in a stern voice. "Look what you're doing to Kate, your own daughter. Speak up and stop pushing her away like this."

His words seemed to get through to Lonnie, and she showed how apologetic she was. "I'm so sorry, Kate. I shouldn't have done that. I just...I saw you and what I saw was that unforgivable, rotten wolf that you just happen to look like."

Tears welled in my eyes, and I rushed forward to Lonnie. "I know it's hard for you, too," I whispered in her ear. "I know you can't stand to see the wolf that you saw that twenty three years ago abandon the only daughter you ever had and then come back to claim her as her own. But I will tell you this, Lonnie. You will always be my mother, the mother that raised me, the mother that was there for me when I needed her most, the mother that taught me, the mother that will always be truer than true and will always be in my heart."

Lonnie started to cry softly, and I stood there, comforting her the whole time. "I d-don't ever w-want to lose y-you, Kate," she choked out.

"And you never will," I promised.

My mother stepped forward, a gentle smile on her face as I backed away from Lonnie. "Hello, my name is Hannah," she introduced herself. Lonnie did the same. "I-I just have one thing I wish to say..." she paused for a few seconds as she took a deep breath. "Thank you. Thank you so much for caring for my daughter for all these years. I wish I could have been there for her, but my pack wouldn't have allowed it. I'm...just glad that she had someone in her life that she could call her mother." By the time she was finished, my mother was in tears.

Lonnie seemed surprised, but her kind, caring nature quickly kicked in. With a smile, she padded up to the white wolf and wrapped her neck around hers. My mother sobbed into Lonnie's shoulder while she comforted her.

I went to stand by Leo's side, relaxing against him and breathing in his soothing scent. "Hey Kate!" An energetic voice called. I looked over at Bella, staying where I was against Leo. "Who's that you're with right there?" She asked.

I looked up at Leo with a gentle smile as he smiled back down at me. I looked back at Bella and replied, "Oh, this is just Leo. He's just my mate, no one important."

"No one important, huh?" Leo playfully growled and stepped away from me, causing me to almost lose my balance. I growled at him as I leapt at him and tugged on his ear.

Katy screamed as she charged us both and jumped at us, knocking us over. We all burst into laughter as the three of us laid there on the ground in a familiar heap.

"They are quite the family, aren't they?" My mother asked, chuckling.

"Oh, you have no idea," Lonnie and I said at the same time. We jerked our heads at each other and smiled. Maybe we were different than most wolf families. But it didn't matter because they were my family.
