Chapter 2: The Forest Hides Many Secrets

"Don't worry," the other Immune assured. "We'll be okay."

I nodded and looked at my surroundings. The Immune whom spoke to me was a cat species. She wore all black. She also had black hair and black ears and a tail. Her eyes were a beautiful shade of emerald green and they sparkled as the light from the morning sun dappled her face. She looked magnificent. Her guardian must have loved her and taken good care of her.

There were other Immune species too. I saw a hawk species. He had a confident vibe to him and he looked like the oldest out of the ten of us. His arms were actually large wings and from what Mr. Dewson had taught me, I guessed he had hollow bones as well. There was a sheep species too. She had fluffy white hair and her legs were quite skinny and black. I noticed that as she nervously shifted her feet, her legs bent backward. She looked almost as young as Lookie and I.

I laughed when I saw Lookie and the hawk boy butt heads with each other over who should lead. They were both fit for leaders. I silently routed for the hawk boy. Although Lookie was loyal and smart, the hawk boy had much better flying experience than I so he could speed over the forest and look for shelter. He also seemed much stronger than anyone in the group, save Lookie's fangs and an alligator boy's jaws. The hawk boy could easily scare a foe with his large build.

"How do we know we can trust a hawk, Bird Boy?" Lookie sneered.

"The name's Kludd. And at least we wouldn't be following a mindless dog who would hand us over to the government for a bone!" Kludd retorted.

"W-well... I can actually pick things up! You just have stupid wings!" Lookie huffed, obviously loosing.

Kludd stuck out his tounge and made a fart noise, pretty immature, even for me.

"At least I can hunt on both land and sky. Dog Breath." Kludd replied.

I looked down at Kludd's legs. Those long, skinny legs were definitely built for speed.

Lookie huffed angrily and slinked off toward me, obviously giving up. His normally upright tail hung low to the ground and his ears were pulled back to his head.

"You two were funny when you fought," I said, laughing, trying to brighten up Lookie.

Lookie just mumbled something about Kludd that didn't sound nice.

I sighed. The cat species girl walked over.

"Sorry, how rude of me. I never introduced myself, did I?" she told us in a kind manner, "My name is Jynx. And you two are?"

"I'm Juju and this is Lookie," I said.

I got closer to her ear and whispered, "Lookie's a little upset right now. He just lost to Kludd, the hawk boy."

"N-no! I... I just let him win! I don't lose not on purpose!" Lookie retorted, flustered.

Jynx and I laughed at Lookie's reddening face. I leaned up against a nearby tree when suddenly, a turtle boy appeared. That's odd... I thought there were only ten of us... I thought to myself.

"Oh! I didn't know there were other Immune! I found something shiny in the trees and went to check it out. Turns out it was a necklace! It's made out of twenty-four carrot silver with a real sapphire surrounded by twenty-four carrot gold!" he exclaimed.

"How do you know all that?" Jynx and I asked in unison.

"Well... my guardian was very interested in rocks and metals and stuff! So... she taught me how to tell the difference between different carrots of gold and silver and to know if a gem or mineral is real or not. By the way, my name is Aaron. What are yours?" Aaron explained.

"Juju."

"Jynx."

"Lookie..." we all replied, one by one.

"Well, I'm not one for jewelry and I don't care for value, so how about you have it, Juju?" Aaron asked.

"S-sure!" I exclaimed, taken by surprise.

Aaron handed me the necklace. Jynx gave a jealous sigh as it glistened in the sunlight. I put it on and tucked the shining beauty in my shirt so I didn't rub it in Jynx's face.

"Hey!" Kludd called to everyone as he flew on top of the rock in the middle of the clearing, "We've got to get moving if we don't want those facility destroyers to catch us now, do we? Just follow me and we'll be fine!"

Lookie gave out a very angry huff and we all followed Kludd through the green undergrowth. Birds sang a song with such a slow tune and such perfect harmony, that it seemed the birds were warning us of something. The song definitely did not seem like the normal, happy songs I used to hear through my window.

We continued to trek the long path Kludd was taking us. It was even longer because a goat girl would faint at the slightest noise. Kludd eventually had to carry her or we would have to stop every five seconds.

As it got darker, though, I started to get worried. The birds were still singing that long, continuous, dreadful song that they started to sing in the beginning. I was buzzing a few inches off the ground from pure nervous habit and I kept seeing a large shadow zip by out of the corner of my blue eyes.

Everyone else was on edge too. Lookie and Jynx would keep glancing to and fro with their light-catching eyes and Aaron was walking much faster than he was before, but he had a much calmer expression than anyone else. It wasn't until much later that I began to hear a voice.

"Juuujuuuu... Oh Juuujuuuu..." the voice called, "Come over here Juju... Away from the group..."

It was hypnotizing. I wanted to leave the group so bad, but I couldn't. I don't know how or why, but I recognized that voice. It was cold and merciless. Like a killer waiting in the shadows. Waiting for their next victim.

I shook it off and continued to follow the group. Once we finally reached another clearing, Kludd told us to stop. Everyone gave exasperated sighs and collapsed where they stood for a nice rest.

"Hey, cat!" Kludd called to Jynx.

"Name's Jynx," she told Kludd as she walked over to him.

"Whatever. I need you to keep guard for any dangers. If you start to fall asleep, wake up Dog Breath over there. Tell him it's his turn to keep watch. Then tell him to wake me up if he starts to sleep." Kludd instructed.

"Fine. But when you get ready to sleep, why don't you sleep over by Juju?" Jynx looked over at me with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "She'll get cold from being shy,"
