Ryan continued whiling away a lazy morning at school with nothing much happening. He contemplated going home when he heard the scream in his head. It was his sister yelling about the rogue attack. She sounded out of breath, which meant she was the one chased. The pack instantly got into action. He rushed towards the place Lucy was referring to, simultaneously giving orders to his pack for securing the school premises. He got enraged thinking about the rogue attack so close to the school, that too on his sister. Eleven of his packs strongest joined him as they rushed to the greenhouse. It took them just two minutes to reach, What they saw stunned them. Lucy was in the back, protected by a... human?
Ryan could not believe what he was witnessing. There were six rogues, one wolf was already done in by none other than that human loser Zack.
"What the...!" exclaimed Sam beside him.
Right then Zack flew above one and took down two of them at the same time. Ryan's pack was about to help him, he held them back, "I want to see what this guy can do?"
The way he moved was unusual. There was no shred of doubt in his attack, watching him fight was fascinating. He seemed to attack with clear, precise moves.
"He is only attacking their vital parts, and going for the kill," growled Luka in anger.
Sam looked on surprised, "He is taking them down saving Lucy. Why is that not a good thing?"
"It means this is not his first time killing wolves," Ryan answered, bitterness creeping into his voice.
Sam looked from Luka to Ryan, noting their grim expressions finally getting the picture. As expected, Zack finished taking down the last of the wolves.
Once the fight was over Ryan allowed his pack to move in. Zack was trying to make sure his sister was fine. He would have appreciated the concern had he not heard his next comment, "WHERE THE HELL IS YOUR STUPID ALPHA?"
"THE STUPID ALPHA IS STANDING RIGHT HERE," Ryan snapped back striding towards him. Zack spun around, blood draining from his face, as he realized his mistake too late. Having admitted the knowledge of werewolf existence means a death sentence. The pack spread out surrounding him, not allowing him to escape.
Zack looked around and sighed, 'She must have called them earlier. Damn it! Why didn't I realize that sooner?' It was a gamble to try to get out before the pack came in. Looking back at the situation, he knew he did not have a choice. Either kill or be killed that was it, and nothing else mattered. Ryan came forward and hugged the girl. Whoever she was, he seemed to care for her very much, "Are you ok?" Ryan asked her earnestly. There was a concern which he had never seen the strict Alpha display, it tugged his heart. Zack tried to slip away, but Luka and Sam stood before him blocking his path.
"Going somewhere?" Zack got taunted from behind. He turned to find a very angry-looking Alpha.
"Explain!" he ordered.
"What do you want me to explain?' Zack asked exasperatedly. "I saw her chased by wolves, and they were about to kill her. So I stepped in to help, that's all." Zack tried to ease the situation by stating the facts, it was crucial he didn't agitate the wolves.
"That doesn't explain the fact you know about packs, alphas, and rogues. It also does not explain how a mere human is able to kill six wolves with a stick. Even my strongest will have a problem handling that. Now... EXPLAIN TRUTHFULLY OR I WILL GIVE THE COMMAND TO KILL YOU," Ryan barked.
Zack realized he was losing time trying to pacify the wolves. He started sweating profusely, his whole body contracting with pain. He had to get out of there fast before it happens.
"Look, I meant no harm," He raised his arms in surrender, moving to where he had dropped his bag. A few growls erupted around him.
"Stay where you are," ordered the Alpha.
"Okay... Okay..." he surged, dropped down, squatting on the ground, trying to get his breath back to normal. The tingling sensation was starting, and his vision blurred. Zack realized it was going to happen now, and there was nothing he could do about it. He kept looking at his bag, a movement followed sharply by the Alpha.
"What's in the bag?" he questioned strolling near and gathering the bag.
"Noth... Nothing. Just a regular bag," Zack narrowed his eyes.
"He knows about the mind link," added the girl named Lucy.
"Looks like there is not much he doesn't know about us," mused Sam.
Zack was about to respond when it started - The shivering. He knew it was just a matter of time before it started. It always happens when he stressed out.
'Shit! Not now,' He did not want to show his weakness in front of anybody, but there was nothing he could do. His whole body started trembling. He tried to hug himself and concentrate on his breathing to calm down, but it did not work - the trembling only increased.
Ryan frowned, looking concerned, 'What happened? The guy was okay one minute, and the next he is shaking all over.'
"Hey... What's wrong with you?" Luka asked.
"Ca...can you go...get...get my bagggg..." he mumbled, voice laced with a lot of pain. Lucy hurried to his bag and brought it to him. With shaking hands, he opened it and retrieved a bottle of pills, and popped two into his mouth. Lucy found some water and helped him to drink it. Zack finally seemed to calm down after taking the pills.
"Sorry about that," he gulped. "I get panic attacks when there is a sudden adrenaline rush." Nobody said a word. Ryan was still standing before him, his arms folded and legs apart waiting for an explanation. 'Guess I can't slip out of it this time.'
"Are you a Hunter?" accused Sam.
"What?" Zack asked, surprised. "Hunter, No way... No fucking way. I'm not a hunter. Believe me when I say, one of the things that I hate the most are the hunters. Never compare me to them," he said earnestly.
"You are not a Hunter - but a human, yet you have the capability to take down six rouges. Explain that," Luka stated. "And no more lies please, we can clearly tell when you are lying."
Zack sighed and sat down, "I was trained to," Ryan's eyebrows shot up, before lowering in displeasure.
"I have been trained since I was nine years old to take down any attack, be it a human or a Werewolf."
"What do you mean - trained to?, Why?" interjected Sam which earned him a growl from Ryan. "Let him finish," he said.
"My family was killed in a Rogue attack when I was seven. I was roaming in the woods, my home burned down, lost and wandering around aimlessly. The pack that lived in the area found me, took me in. It turned out the pack was also a victim of the same attack. They had lost many of their own. Most of the remaining were women and children. The Alpha and all the capable fighters were dead. They did not kill me, but took pity on me and took me in. In the following years, there was another attack, they survived barely, that's when they decided, each member of the pack will learn to defend for themselves. Since I lived along with the pack, it was necessary to include me in the training as well. It was brutal - kids aging more than six were in training. We were to learn to defend ourselves against any kind of attack. Whatever was the plan of the elder, it paid off. Since their pack home got destroyed, they were trying to find a new place. The area where they tried to reside, then filled with Rogues and Hunters. There were many other attacks after that. But we survived all because of the training. We were trained not just physically, but mentally as well. Attack vital points, kill within the first strike - this has been drilled into our memory. The attack no matter how feeble should be fatal, and that's what I did."
Everyone was silent after hearing his reason. They all had baffling expressions on their faces. "You are expecting me to believe such a far fetched story," Ryan demanded. "No wolf pack will take humans no matter what the condition. And if your story is correct, What is the name of the pack that took you in, Why don't you say that?"
"I'm sorry I can't say that," said Zack. "I know the penalty for letting a human in on the werewolf secret is death; even though a few exceptions are made. I'm not going to let my pack go through that."
"Your Pack?... Your Pack?... You are not even a wolf," Sam accused.
"I don't have to be one. There is no way, no matter your threats. I will not give you any information about my family. Yes, I am not a Wolf, but that does not mean I will betray them. It's your choice to believe, me or not. I'm here only to finish school. Once it's done, I will leave."
"I can kill you right here now, do you understand that?" Ryan warned.
Zack was still trembling, but stood up and marched towards Ryan, standing face to face and looked at him straight in his eyes, "Yes you can. But You also realize, I can take down half the men you brought with you to the other side. Do you want such a loss, Alpha? I may be tired, but that does not mean, I will go down without a fight."
Ryan looked into clear green eyes, which were staring back at him with suppressed anger. There was no trace of fear or deceit, Just plain sincerity. He was impressed; but did not show it, "Is that a threat?"
"You can take it as whatever you want. I have been here for two months and have never interfered in any of your pack activities. I don't ever want to. I just want to finish school, Go back to my family. Can you accept that?"
Ryan stood there pondering on what Zack said. So far, there has not been any problem from him. Ryan could not ignore the fact, He saved his sister. He could not begin to imagine what would have happened had the human not been there to save his sister. "I will let you off now; but remember, I WILL BE WATCHING YOU" Ryan whispered icily.
Zack nodded, took his bag and left. "You are letting him off so easily," asked Sam.
"You know I'm not. We will watch him for now. I don't want to kill a human, there will be much paperwork involved."
School finished without any more interruptions, but Zack noticed the constant watch that was kept over him at school. He figured he has to get used to this monitoring, He got into his Porsche, speed up to his house making sure that no one was following him. He did find another car tailing him, but it was no match to the speed of his Porsche. 'What a day' thought Zack. He did not wish for them to find out about him, not yet; but they were bound to find out sooner or later. Zack entered his empty apartment and grabbed a coke from the fridge. Walking towards the balcony; recollecting the events of the day. He got so immersed in his thoughts, He failed to discern a noise behind him.
"So deep in your thoughts," someone whispered right next to his ear. He shrieked; and dropped the coke whirling around. Bryan was laughing his head off, clutching his sides. "Oh man!, You should see your face, it's priceless. You still fall for the same old trick."
"It's not funny Bryan. Someday I'm going to end up killing you," Zack shouted with hands on his hips. "But still..." Bryan said, sitting up, "Just coz your wolf senses are not there; does not mean you give me the opportunity to sneak up on you." Bryan's expression turned grim and serious.
"I was just too deep in my thoughts," Zack defended.
"However, you are way too relaxed," accused Bryan.
"Come on Bryan, I'm too tired," Zack said plopping himself beside him. "I have had a heck of the day." Bryan arched his brows, "Wanna talk about it?"
Zack proceeded to tell him the events of the day; ending with the warning he received from the alpha. "Phew! That's too much. So, they got attacked right on the campus. They sure are getting bolder," he pondered.
"That's not a good sign, Bryan. Alert the other Alpha's. Let's have a meet later this week. I also would like to get more information on the attack."
"Roger that Boss," said Bryan, making a saluting motion with his hand. "But seriously, How are you coping being so close to him?"
"Me... no... no problem at all," stammered Zack.
"No problem at all, right? That's why you ended up taking two pills, instead of one" accused Bryan.
"That, I didn't have a choice. I had to make sure I won..."
"BY TRYING TO MAKE SURE; YOU KNOW YOU ARE HURTING YOUR WOLF. WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO STOP, EVELYN?" Bryan shouted.
Evelyn did not answer. Her disguise as Zack was helping her with what she wanted to achieve. But, she also could not neglect that she was hurting, her wolf in the process. Though she and her wolf agreed; this needs to be done, others in her pack did not. Bryan gave up trying to reason with her, went upstairs to sleep.
