Killing Time[approx. 3 months and 7 days since activation]

The next day, all I seem to be able to think about is the interview. Despite all Donovan's preparations for the safety of the residents of this apartment complex, I still have my doubts. While eating breakfast, I mill over the possibilities of what could result from tonight's show, both good and bad. On the bright side, Donovan's words could strike the hearts of the people and convince them to stop the riots or just to protest peacefully. On the bad side, his words could enrage the public, increasing the ferocity of the riots. Either way, the events of tonight are sure to make the history books, or maybe not, it could be that I'm just overthinking it and nobody will believe a lawyer anyway. Just as I'm about to leave the house for work, I glance over to the calendar and see that it's a Saturday, which is a day I have off. I don't know how I managed to end up with weekends off considering my position, but I did and boy am I glad. Working seven days a week is not something I would ever hope for. Unfortunately, on a day like today I have nothing to do. Considering the fact that I just got out of the lab and I have all day to wait for a television show, boredom hits me like a bullet train. I decide for my own sanity to call up Avery. She talks nonstop about getting me out and about to explore the city and have fun. I've just never taken her up on it, considering my busy work schedule and the time its taking to get used to things around here, I've never had much time for "fun." It seems though, now, I have time for nothing but. I reach for my phone, but then realize that I never did get myself a cell phone. I only have the landline in the room. "Definitely item number one on today's to do list." I pick up the landline and dial Avery's number. Considering she only lives a matter of feet away, I could just talk to her face to face, but if she's asleep, the phone is less likely to wake her up. It rings three times before she picks it up.

"Hello?" She says groggily. She's obviously not been out of bed long.

"Hey Avery, it's Selene." I say

"Oh! Selene! What's up?"

"So, I decided to take you up on your offer." I say, wondering if she'll remember.

"Offer.....You mean you wanna go around the city?" She asks, a little bit of excitement detectable in her voice.

"Yeah, that's what I meant." I say.

"Well sure I do! I never miss out on a chance to just get out and do random stuff! Meet ya' outside in say...ten minutes." She says, hanging up immediately.

"Well I guess that went well." For the next ten minutes, I just sorta do whatever to pass the time. I eat a granola bar, watch like five seconds of a tv show, nearly throw the radio across the room because I still can't decide on what I like, stuff like that. Eventually though, the ten minutes comes to an end and I practically race outside the building. Avery is waiting on me, beside of a bright blue convertible sports car. My jaw drops at the beauty of a car. I, being used to my rather cheap company car was not expecting something like this. She laughs at my reaction.

"Hey, never said my job didn't pay well!" She chuckles.

"That's a nice car!" I say, still amazed by the luxury car in front of me.

"Thanks! Someone said I have the only one like it in the city, so yeah." She says, scratching the back of her head in an almost embarrassed manner. "Anyway, we should get going. I personally say we head to the mall first, there's always fun to be had there."

"Well, I was sorta thinking of something I'd like to do first." I say, feeling a bit bad for disrupting Avery's plan, but boy if I thought she would listen, I was definitely mistaken.

"No!" She fake coughs and stutters out, "I-I mean no, I'm sure you can find whatever it is there. We just really need to go to the mall."

"Alright then." I say slowly, drawing out every word. Avery's sudden reaction startled mee a little, but I suppose she has a reason too for going to the mall, and since it's her car we're going in, I figure I'll listen to what she has to say. I climb into the passenger seat and she gets in the driver's. Rather than start driving immediately after she starts the car, she rolls the top down, leaving open air above our heads. I suppose it'll be nice considering it's the middle of May and actually pretty hot. She starts driving and of course, turns on the freaking radio. Now if it's not easy to tell by now, radios and I have a love-hate relationship. Even though I've been activated for as long as I have, I still can't for the life of me figure out what music I like. The station she has it turned to is an Electronic Dance Music station, which apparently plays some of her own songs on occasion(or so she's told me several times.) For the most part, the music I've heard from Avery I liked, but I don't really know what to expect when I find a favorite genre or whatever, so I've put Electronic on my mental list of possible favorites. I guess Avery noticed the expression on my face was odd, so she looks over at me(while she's driving!).

"Hey Selene, you contemplating life over there or something?" She asks playfully. I sigh in response.

"Just trying to figure out what music I like."

"Oh! That's easy! When you find a favorite, you'll know, trust me." She says cheerfully, directing her eyes back to the road.

"Here's the thing, I don't do emotions the exact same way you do. I started out with a fully matured mind and had to learn emotions where as you started out with an immature mind so emotions were something that were naturally given. In other words, I don't know what this "feeling" is that I'll have. I don't know what to expect!" I say, a bit frustrated.

"Well, heres some signs you're starting to like something. You'll listen to it and either freak out over it the first time, or you'll mentally go, oh, that was good. If you take the freak out route, it's true love, but it may be short lived. On the other hand, the oh that was good thing gives you a chance a bit later on to go, oh, what was that song I liked? I think I'll listen to it again. Then you start listening to it over and over, then others by the same artist, then more in the genre until slowly but surely, you're obsessed and BOOM! You've got a favorite!" She says, getting more enthusiastic as she explains more and more.

"Oh, okay. I guess I understand." I say, still a bit confused. Honestly, the way she explained it, I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing. We ride almost the rest of the way in silence, except for when Avery thinks of a couple stupid jokes to tell. We get to the mall and step out of the car. The mall is an impressive three story building with a skylight and lights on the sides that I assume come on at night.

"Well are we gonna go inside or just stand out here staring?" Avery asks, playfully punching me in the arm as she walks past me towards the door. I didn't know punching could be playful until now, I guess human signs of affection still confuse me after a month. I run to catch up to Avery, not wanting to get too far behind. We walk inside, the air conditioning feeling great inside the building. I look around, seeing all the colorful signs indicating stores and places to eat. It looks like we walked into I've heard the food court. There are a lot of people basically everywhere, some are in rather large groups, some are simply alone. From my first visual sweep of the room I see people in all ranges of ages, from babies to elderly folks who I guess wanted to go somewhere to talk to each other and eat. A majority of people I notice though are teenagers getting together on a day off. I myself look a bit like a teenager, in the way that young adults do. Avery looks at me, smiling at my awestruck expression. "So, what store first?" She asks,

"Is there a phone store?" I reply, still standing strong on my resolution to get a cell phone.

"Yeah, it's actually not that far from where we are right now! Come on, I'll show you." I follow her to a smaller, narrower store in the mall with phones lined up on all of the walls of the store. "So, what're you looking for?" Avery asks, gesturing for the attendant who was beginning to walk up to us to go away.

"Well, I was thinking I want something new, like you have! I'm new myself, I don't wanna have an outdated phone!" I laugh.

"Alrighty! The funny thing is, I just got my phone a couple days ago! I can show you the one I got." She says brightly. Avery walks me over to a rack with new, shiny looking phones that I swear are in every color possible. "So, one of these?" She asks.

"Yeah, how about the teal one?" I say.

"Ooh! That was my second choice, but I got the purple. You know these are the first phones to have advanced holographic messages?" She states.

"Really? That's awesome! I mean, first we had video messages, and now holographic ones!" I say, amazed by such a small device being capable of so much. Avery calls over an attendant to tell them which phone we want. The attendant goes into a back room and returns with a box containing my new phone. By the time we leave, we end up being persuaded into a phone case, headphones, and a add on that counts your steps. Walking out of the store, Avery sees a store to the side that she gets excited about.

"Oh Selene! I think you'll like this store!" She says, grabbing my hand and pulling me into the dimly lit store. Inside I see figurines from about any show, book, movie, or anything you could imagine. There is a bunch of music merchandise there and well, a lot of little trinkets with sarcastic sayings on them. Not only that, but there are walls and walls of t-shirts, odd but pretty dresses, strange jewelry, and things like that. It all seems a bit gothic, but in a subtle, acceptable, sort of cool way. Avery immediately picks out a black shirt that reads "No I didn't burn the house down, there's still a bit of the couch over there" in red lettering. "Selene! You should get something." She says, holding the shirt up to herself to see if it'll fit. I look around, seeing if there's anything that interests me, well, everything in the store "interests" me, I just mean if I want anything. I walk over to a rack of bows, bracelets, necklaces, ear rings, and chokers and find a necklace with gears on it. Of course, me being the steam worker/ inventor I am, I have to have it. I look around for about twenty more minutes, finding a shirt, skirt, and dress I like, but not wanting to spend a lot of money in one place, I decide to only pick one. I show them all to Avery for opinions.

"So, there's the shirt." I say, holding up a grey, shirt with the shoulders cut out that has a design of bronze chains all across it.

"Ooh! Its pretty! The only thing is, you wear a lot of bronze colored things I've noticed, maybe you should try something different." Avery says in reply to the shirt. I then hold up the skirt, which is sort of short and pleated. It's stretchy, but looks like jean material. The skirt is high waisted with gold colored buttons going down the waist part. Avery's eyes widen at this, I guess not expecting me to be the type of person to wear a skirt. "Selene! That's really cool! The only thing is, would you wear that?" She asks. I chuckle, not giving her a direct answer. I then hold up the dress, which is something I never thought I'd do. In all honesty, I don't think I'm a dress type of person. I figured though I need at least one so this one seemed as good as any. It's black with gold lines coming from the shoulders and webbing across the length of the dress. By the look on Avery's face, I know she's made her choice. "Dress. Get the dress." She says, looking around almost as if to see if there's another one anywhere. I laugh.

"Okay, I'll try it out." I say, putting the shirt and skirt back. We check out and walk out of the store.Basically the rest of the day is spent killing time at the mall. Somehow Avery ended up getting security called on her for trying to give a little kid a drink of Red Bull, but other than that, the day stayed mostly uneventful. Before either of us know it, it's nearing twelve thirty, the time the Mark Keller Show comes on. "Avery! We need to get back, as in NOW!" I shout, grabbing her hand and practically dragging her out of the mall. Once we get into the car, she bursts out laughing.

"I never knew you could be so forceful Selene!" She chuckles, starting the car and backing out of her parking place. I look out the window as we drive home, taking in the colorful cityscape in front of me. Someday, I'll actually walk around here at night, but not this night. Avery makes sure to add a little extra speed to our trip home, getting us there with five minutes until the show starts. "So, what did you have me speed home for?" Avery asks as we pull into the apartment complex's parking lot.

"I have to watch the Mark Keller Show tonight, there's gonna be discussion on the riots of late." I say, anxiously tapping my hand against the door handle.

"Alright, well, you seem eager to get inside so here." She unlocks the door and I immediately open it and sprint towards the building without even a gesture of goodbye.

"God, I hope this goes well."
