Chapter 1: Warm Welcome

Dennis Quaid as Jack Montgomery
Stella Parton as Jane Montgomery

The two teenagers are just fictional people.

Jack Montgomery was sitting in his office, looking over the lists of recipes for this week's newspaper editorial as he picked through which ones he liked best when his assistant Brynn walked in.

"Good morning Jack." Brynn said politely as she smiled and handed him his coffee, something he wished she let himself get.

"Brynn, you don't have to bring me coffee. My wife made some this morning and I already have some right here."

"It's okay, I like being helpful."

"And also, good morning."

"You seem off guard this morning."

"It's just these recipes are hard to choose from."

"Did your wife send some with you?"

"No and I wish she would have, but she was so busy with a proposal last night that she did not have time to get some together."

"Well, I made her famous angel biscuits and they were amazing."

"That they are. She made some this morning, but she was so nervous about her proposal this morning that she forgot to preheat the oven."

"What kind of proposal was she working on?"

"Oh it was for a cooking commercial."

"Her last one was amazing. She stresses herself out too much Jack." Brynn said

"She's the only one who likes putting them together for the company and she has so much to do already, that her boss already expects her to come up with all these plans and proposals, that it takes time away from our kids."

"How are you kids, by the way?"

"Great! They both can't wait for the weekend and I am too. Now, which one should we publish for the column this week?" Jack asked as he held up two recipes as Brynn looked at them.

She looked at them back and forth as chose one.

"Go with the baked chicken and roasted potatoes."

"Okay." Jack said as he turned to get a file out.

Later on that day

Jack was working on writing and editing an article when the phone interrupted his thoughts as he picked it up.

"Hello, Atlanta Journal Constitutional. This is Jack Montgomery, I'm here to help you publish your ads, column ideas and any of your advertisement needs."

"Well hello Mr. Montgomery." Jack listened to the voice of the sweet, southern lilt as he sat back.

"Hello sweetheart." Jack looked around to see that all his co-workers and assistant were all out to lunch.

"How did you know it was me?" She asked innocently.

"Who else has that incredibly sweet voice?"

"Most people do baby."

"How is your day going so far?"

"Long. I have a meeting in three hours and another show in four, so definitely long. How 'bout yours?"

"Same, but I will see in an hour for lunch."

"Usual place?"

"I was thinking of home actually."

"Okay, that works too."

"I'll come by and pick you up."

"Even better. Speaking of which, we need to go by and give Connor his bag again."

"I thought he drove to school this morning?"

"No, him and Raegan slept in this morning."

"Well, they deserve it after spending time with both of our families this summer."

"I can't believe your sister asked me if I was pregnant." Jane said as she sipped her water.

"Yeah, the kids were also in disbelief."

"I was too."

"Well, after everyone gets back to the office. I will come by and pick you up and I will fix lunch for you."

"Sounds wonderful honey." Jane said as someone knocked on her door as it was her boss.

"Well honey, I have to go, but I will see you in a hour."

"Okay babe. I love you and see you in awhile."

"I love you too baby, bye." Jane said as they both hung up as her boss walked in as she set the phone back in place.

"Good morning Jane."

"Good morning Mr. Reddit."

"I wanted to talk to you about a job position opening up soon."

"Okay, I'm all ears."

"Your husband works for the AJC news column, is that right?"

"He's the boss, yes."

"So, newspaper editor?"

"Yes sir."

"How would he feel if his wife became the new CEO of the TV station here?" Mr. Reddit asked as Jane smiled.

"He would probably be happy for me, but I love my job in the film department and l have only been here for two months."

"Yes, I know, but you're the only person besides myself who knows how to run this place and you've been in every department."

"Mr. Reddit, I think someone else may do a great job in your position, but I have no plans on changing any time soon. Who else is on your list to move up?"

"There is no list Jane. No one else here can take your lead and if we try to move someone else up, then we won't have anyone else to have in my position when I retire." Mr. Reddit said as Jane sat back as she sighed.

"How long do I have until the final decision?" Jane asked as she dreaded hearing her boss's answer.

"You have until Friday."

"My son's first high game is on Friday night and my daughter will be cheering. I'm sorry Mr. Reddit, but my children come first. You'll have to either put someone else in your place or fire me, because you know me very well."

"Just think of the money that you will make Jane."

"I make great money here Mr. Reddit, but my children will always be my first thought to anything my job offers me and if that takes me away from them, then I won't take it."

"Okay. I will start looking for other advocates then."

"Thank you Mr. Reddit and as always, your time is always appreciated." Jane said as she stood up and walked him to the door and he exited.

"Yours too Mrs. Montgomery." He said as he walked off as Jane walked back to her desk and admired the pictures of her and Jack, their kids and various pictures of her family.

An hour later

Jack arrived to see Jane scanning her ID badge and walking out to greet him as he got out.

"There's my favorite lady in the whole wide world."

"I just want to go home." Jane said as he opened her door as she got in.

Jack closed her door as he was confused by this, she usually greeted him with a kiss.

He got in on his side as Jane sighed and kept staring out the window as he drove off to head home for lunch.

"Babe, is something wrong?"

"I would rather talk about this at home. Let's just go home."

"What happened?"

"Jack, please let's just get home. First, go by the school and drop off Conner's bag."

"Okay." Jack said as he drive off towards the school.

He dropped off Conner's sports bag and seen Raegan waving at him.

He walked off towards the car as he seen Jane with her head up against the window.

...

They arrived home as they took their shoes off and relaxed.

Jack made her a ham and toasted veggie sandwich as she was totally exhausted.

"As for your question earlier babe. Mr. Reddit wants me to be the new CEO of the broadcasting network." Jane said as Jack rubbed her feet and smiled.

"Baby, that's great."

"No, that's not. It will take me away from you and the kids, no thank you."

"Honey, don't worry about us and take the position."

"No, because I am not missing anything. I make great money in the position I am in now."

"I can always record them." Jack said as Jane huffed.

"Jack, I want to see my babies play. That's the end of the line. Mr. Reddit can find another person to take his place."

"Okay honey, are you're okay?"

"Yes, I'm totally fine. I love you and you're lucky I finished early today because I finished my new proposal today for our new segment, plus the new commercial."

"What are you cooking this time?"

"Hopefully something with a lot of wine, because I'm going to need it after this week."

"Can we share one?"

"Sure honey. In a couple of months is our anniversary."

"How about tonight since the kids usually leave?"

"No, I need to bathe alone tonight sweetheart, but you are more than welcome to wash my back."

"I have to get back to the office, but I won't be home in time for dinner or to watch you bathe."

"Okay." Jane got up and went into the kitchen as she unloaded the dishwasher.

Jack went off to work as her phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Hey mama." The voice belonging to her daughter.

"Hey baby. Where is your phone?"

"It died and I was wondering if you could come get me after practice."

"Okay. I thought you were going to grandma's after school?"

"No thanks. Aunt Rita is going to be there and I really don't like when I'm there with her. She makes me do everything for her."

"Well okay, I will be there after while. Is there anything in specific you want for supper?"

"How about Zaxby's and a movie night?"

"Sounds great and have you talked to Connor today to see if he's coming home or to Cole's house?"

"He's going to Cole's house."

"Well, it will just be me and you for awhile. Your daddy had to work late again and so, we'll just have a girl's night."

"Sounds great mama. Listen, I gotta go but I will see you here in a little while." Raegan said as Jane tapped her fingers on the island out of boredom.

"Okay baby. I will see you after while."

"Bye mama. I love you."

"I love you too baby. Bye." Jane said as the phone hung up.

She decided to make a list of things she needed as her phone rang again.

"Hello?"

"Hi, umm... Is this Jane Montgomery?"

"Yes this is. May I ask who's calling?"

"Hi Nora. This is Nora Smith from our graduating class."

"Hi Nora."

"I was just reminding you that our class reunion is next weekend."

"Oh yes. I got the invitation two months ago and of course I remember."

"Can you believe it?"

"No, not really."

"Well, I hope to see you and Jack there."

"Of course."

"Alright, see you then."

"See ya." Jane sighed and rolled her eyes as she hung up the phone.

She looked at the clock on the wall to see that she had two hours until she had to pick up Raegan from softball practice as she headed to her room.

She skimmed through her bookshelf to find her yearbook to open it.

She sat on the floor with it as she skimmed through the pages to see Jack with Jane on his arm.

"Mr. and Miss Georgia Peach." Jane mumbled to herself.

She seen the pictures of them together as she seen one with her and a friend.

"At least I got Most Talented."

She remembered when she poured a glass of grape soda all over her when they were in high school as she thought about Jack and how clearly jealous Nora was back then.

An hour rolls around as Jane was going through the box of letters she saved from everyone who gave her one.

She got up and changed out of her work clothes and changed into a red shirt with black leggings and headed out to pick Raegan up.

She ordered their food ahead of time as she went and picked it up and arrived just in time to the school to see Connor with a group of his friends as she seen him with his arm wrapped around one of the cheerleaders as she sighed.

Raegan came running with one of her friends as someone tapped on her drivers side window. She rolled it down to greet them with a warm welcome and hello.

"Hi. Are you picking someone up?"

"Yes, my daughter."

"Who is your daughter?" The lady asked

"Right there. Number fifteen."

"Raegan Montgomery?"

"Yes ma'am."

"I'm Nora Smith."

"Great!" Jane drawled out.

"Who are you?"

"You called me earlier, remember?"

"I called a lot of people earlier."

"I guess you did." Jane said as she wished Raegan would hurry up.

"So, which one were you that I called?"

"Jane Montgomery."

"No way. I tried calling Jack, but he did not answer."

"He's always busy at work, so it's hard to get through to him."

"Well, I guess I will see you and Jack next Saturday evening then."

"Yep." Jane said as she rolled up her window as Raegan stood there talking to her friends.

Jane decided to text Jack's phone to give him a reminder to call her when he had time.

"Come on Raegan." Jane began to get impatient.

She turned on the radio to see if that helped, it did until she seen Connor kissing the girl he had his arm around her.

"I can deal without seeing that for a day."

30 minutes later, Raegan finally came and got in the passenger side as Jane wanted to get home as soon as possible.

Raegan hooked her phone up to the radio as it turned on and she started playing music.

"Love me like you do." Raegan started singing.

"You know? They have a great choir and band."

"Mama, I'm happy with playing softball and being a dancer."

"Okay." Jane said as they drove out of the school parking lot.

"Mama, is something wrong?"

"I've had a mediocre day."

"What happened?"

"Where do you want me to start?"

"How about work?"

"My boss wants me to accept a job offer that would take me away from y'all and your father."

"Like how?"

"He wants me to be CEO of Peachtree Inc."

"Mom?"

"What?"

"Take the job!"

"No."

"Why?"

"Honey, I don't want it."

"Okay, what else happened?"

"You know Nora Smith?"

"You mean the PTO organizer and chemistry teacher?"

"Yes."

"I like Ms. Nora and she is so sweet."

"She is not a very nice person."

"What did she ever do to you?"

"She did not like me in high school."

"That was high school mom."

"She had a thing for your father and she made school hard for me."

"I though they dated?"

"They did, until your father and I got paired up in biology class together in high school."

"And the moral of the story is?"

"She decided to take her revenge in high school by trashing the first homecoming float I made with the homecoming committee, which she was in." Jane said

"I thought after you graduate, you're supposed to forgive and forget everything people do to you." Raegan said

"You're supposed to, but it still hurts from everything she done to me."

"Well, let's hope that next Saturday will be good for you."

"Yeah me too." Jane said as she kept on driving until they reached their street.

They arrived home and got out to go inside.

They walked in as Raegan went upstairs to shower as Jane clicked the button to the answering machine.

"You have 3 new messages.''

"Hey Jane, it's Blair from work. I just wanted to say I can't wait to see your new commercial and see the new episode tonight. Have a great weekend and enjoy it, I know I will. Bye." The answering machine clicked to the new message.

"Hello baby, it's your mama. I know you're probably busy working on something, but I can't wait to see your new commercial and the new episode tonight or whatever it's called, anyway, give the kids a hug and kiss for me. I love y'all. Bye oh and call me when you have a chance baby. Okay bye bye."

"You have one new message."

"Great!" Jane sarcastically said as she pulled out her food out of the bag.

"Hey Jane, it's Brynn. I just wanted to say that I can't wait for your new commercial and show tonight. You rock, like always and I hope you know that everyone here at the AJC loves you and we hope we can publish an article about you soon. I am a huge fan of your work and I can't wait to see you, maybe for a drink soon. Anyway, I can't wait to watch them tonight. I have to go get my wine and popcorn ready, but anyway, rock on sista! Love you as always, bye bye."

"You now gave zero messages." The machine clicked off as it beeped.

"I think I should have thought of a new career choice."

Later on

Raegan came down dressed and ready to go out with a friend with and Jane was doing paperwork at the island.

"I'm going to Grace's house for the weekend."

"I thought we were going to have a girls night?"

"Mama, I really want to go to Grace's house, please?"

"Fine."

"You're the best!"

"Yeah yeah."

"She said yes." Raegan said into her phone as she yelped with excitement.

"Looks like my wine bottle will be my only friend tonight."

Raegan left as Jane got up and decided to make her way upstairs to her room.

She decided on a bath with bubbles as she drew it and undressed.

She let it fill up as she got in to unwind as the wine settled her frazzled nerves and just enjoy the sound of silence.

...

Later, she was dressed and in bed, reading a novel as she seen headlights in her curtains as she knew Jack was pulling up.

She switched off the light and laid on her right side as she heard the front door open.

...

Jack walked into the kitchen to see a note on the fridge.

Leftovers are in the fridge.

"Okay." Jack said as he opened the fridge to see a chicken sandwich.

He ate as he skimmed through the mail.

"Junk mail." Jack said as he sighed.

He finished eating as he switched off the light and made his way upstairs to his and Jane bedroom.

He walked into the bathroom, stripped out of his clothes and turned on the shower as he stepped in.

He let the water massage his head and body as he heard Jane get up as she stood in front of the mirror.

"Hey babe." Jack called out.

"Hey."

'Are you okay?"

"I feel sick."

"Like as in what kind?"

"The I have a feeling of throwing up kind."

"Hold on."

"No, enjoy your shower. I will take some medicine and go back to bed." Jane said as Jack was puzzled by her response.

Jane got a glass of water and went to find her medicine and took some.

"Damn nerves." She said to herself as she laid back down.

Jack got out and dried himself off as he quickly dressed and brushed his teeth as he went to cuddle up with his wife.

"Jane?"

"What?"

"What is wrong with you?"

"What is wrong with me?"

"Yes."

"Let me tell you what's wrong with me, okay?" Jane said as she quickly turned on her lamp.

"Okay."

"First, I got asked for a different lead in my job, second we got home for lunch today, you could hardly wait to leave. Third, I got a call from Nora Smith asking if we were coming to the reunion next weekend and of course, I said yes just to make you happy because everybody knows that if Mr. and Miss Georgia Peach were not going to be there, then it would be a hellacious night for sure, especially since she still loves you because y'all were supposed to be together forever. Fourth, I waited for thirty minutes for Raegan to come and get in the car when she stood in a circle with her friends and I watched our son play tonsil hockey with this girl from the cheerleading team and Nora had the nerve to come to my car and act all sweet like she did not even know me. Last thing, me and Raegan decided we were going to have a girls night and she ended up going to her friends house and bailed on me." Jane breathed as Jack tried to process everything she just said.

"Honey, I know you're upset but please calm down."

"Jack, do you wish Nora was still your girlfriend?"

"Who the hell is Nora?"

"Seriously?"

"Yes seriously." Jack said as Jane grabbed the yearbook and flipped to the page.

"Recognize her?"

"Well honey, this was so long ago."

"Jack, answer my question."

"No baby, I don't love her. I'm in love with the girl who used to play piano and sing her heart out while writing poetry and songs about things." Jack said as Jane laid down in his arms.

"Really?"

"Oh yeah. I remember that one song you used to sing in high school and I fell in love with you as I watched you read sheet music and play with different chords on your guitar."

"Which song?"

"Something about rain."

"Oh, you mean Mandolin Rain."

"Yes, that's the one."

"I can't believe you remember that."

"You used to sing it to the kids to when they were babies."

"Well, it was my favorite song besides church hymnals."

"Also Patsy Cline songs."

"Blue Moon of Kentucky keep on a shining."

"You could be a singer sweetheart."

"You think?"

"Yeah."

"Well, I like my life here and my job as a food editor is my favorite one I've had since I have my own space. I don't need a fancy job as a CEO."

"You'd whip that place into shape."

"But I would rather be with you and the kids than anywhere else."

"By the way, Brynn wants to do an interview with you."

"Maybe when work isn't so busy. The holidays are coming up. Maybe then."

"Okay, I will tell her."

"Good. Now, let's go to sleep."

"Okay." Jack kissed her as he turned out her lamp.

Author's Note: Okay, thoughts and opinions? I know this is not AHS related, but I don't really have much an audience without my favorite people. Maybe Jessica, Evan, Sarah or anyone could be in the book? What are y'all's thoughts on it?

Positive feedback appreciated.
