Chapter 4- Stardust
"K, we need to find the one called Stardust."
There was a long pause, longer than there had been before.
He pushed the worry for his old friend out of his mind as he listened to the blaster fire in the background.
"Stardust." K2 repeated, his voice almost sounding labored if it was possible for a droid.
Jyn was watching the tour of files when she saw the green light flash above them.
"That's it." She said, watching as Cassian delicately guided the handles over to the blinking file.
Suddenly, right before extraction, the lights of the tour went black and they were staring desperately at a pitched window.
They glanced at each other, knowing what this must mean for their companion.
"K." Cassian called for his friend, apprehension clouded his face as he strained to head over the blasts.
"Climb. Climb!" K2's voice crackled through the comm. "You can still send the plans to the fleet. If they open the shield gate you can broadcast on the tour." There was a loud sound directly above the speaker. "Locking the vault door now."
"Wait. K!!" Cassian ran back to the tunnel, but before he even went a few feet, K's voice came through again.
"Goodbye." At the same time Cassian screamed in anguish and the comm went dead.
The locking mechanism could be heard not far away.
Cassian turned around to face Jyn, his face seemingly broken.
She wanted so desperately to comfort him, to give him kind words of resolution for his long time companion, but she couldn't.
The loss of K weighed heavy on her, but not as much as it did Cassian. He put on a stoic expression with K, but in reality he truly cared for the droid.
For a moment she forgot where they were. She forgot their mission. All she saw was Cassian's shining eyes.
All of a sudden she had pulled him into her, colliding their bodies softly as she wrapped her arms around his torso. She felt him return her embrace, enveloping her in his arms.
She could feel his harsh breath on her hair, uneven and labored.
"He was a good friend." She said softly, her voice muffled by his shoulder.
"Best droid anyone could ask for." He sighed as he released her quickly and straightened his shirt formally.
Jyn shook her head as if to clear it as she pulled out her blaster and aimed at the large window they had been staring out.
"Stand back." She said simply as she shot and the glass shattered into thousands of pieces.
She dropped the gun and began to pull of the imperial uniform that she still had on, Cassian following suit.
No way were they going to be able to climb the tower in those bulky outfits.
She sighed in relief as she felt 10 times lighter without the black clothing on. She didn't know how the imps dealt with those.
She glanced at Cassian and almost smiled at seeing him look like his old self again, but the moment was gone as she turned and began climbing onto the ledge.
Cassian crouched above her, ready to catch her if she slipped.
She spied her landing perch before leaping over the great chasm below her, latching onto the data tower as if it were her life.
She immediately started climbing, gearing Cassian leap onto the tower after her and followed her up.
He had almost caught up to her when she stopped and grabbed the plans, looking below at him to yell, "I got it!" As she yanked on the drive.
Suddenly it came free and she flew backward from her extra force. She felt Cassian's hand fly up to steady her as she found her balance again.
"You okay?" He asked, concerned as she clipped the drive to her belt and continued climbing in response, as if nothing had happened.
Abruptly the door right at their head level slid open with a hiss, revealing Krennic himself with two dark troopers at his shoulders.
"Jyn!" Cassian yelled in warning as he pulled out his blaster and began shooting.
Already they were returning fire, even knocking Jyn to only one hand as she dangled dangerously over the chasm.
Cassian just continued to return fire at the troopers, knowing Jyn could take care of herself. Finally she had shifted out of the sight of the imps as they continued their fire fight.
Cassian leaned forward and shot one of the troopers, hearing the satisfying sizzle of carbon fire in his armor. He leaned forward and shot the other, causing him to tumble forward and over the edge. Cassian didn't bother to watch the trooper fall into the abyss as he focused on Krennic who seemed increasingly intimidated as he shot at Cassian.
"Keeping going! Keep going!" Cassian yelled up at Jyn, sensing her hesitation.
All of a sudden Krennic shot out a few times, hitting Cassian.
Jyn heard him slip and she looked down quickly, her heart seeming to plummet with him, "Cassian!"
She saw him try to break his fall as he crashed into a beam and tumbled onto a platform below with a sickening thump.
She stared down at him for a moment, praying that he would get up. To show some sign of movement.
She could feel the tears push at her eyes, but she swallowed her remorse and tore her gaze away from his humped figure as she began to climb again.
She clenched her jaw as she pushed on, hearing Krennic mobilize below her.
She quickly reached the top where she was met with a spiderweb of beams and a trap door slicing open and shut periodically..
She quickly calculated its movement and leaped off one of the beams and swung herself up and through the trap door, without a second to spare.
She continued up the ladder as the daylight grew lighter and the sound of tie fighters grew louder.
Finally she had reached the satellite's deck as she quickly spotted the input station.
She sauntered over to it quickly, inserting her precious cargo and attempting to pull the lever, but the computer began yelling at her in protest as well as alarms blared at her.
"Reset antennae alignment." The voice said irritatingly.
Jyn glanced behind her and discovered the alignment lever in the most dangerous spot it could ever be.
At the end of a 50 foot catwalk, thousands of feet in the air, in the midst of an air battle between X-wings and TIE fighters.
Jyn rolled her eyes as she started towards the cat walk determinedly, pulling out her blaster as she went.
She reached the controls quickly and began turning the massive disk to aim towards the sky.
After what seemed like ages of the dish moving, it finally turned green.
"Antennae aligned." The voice stated smugly.
Jyn gritted her teeth as she pushed the lever forward to send the plans, but looked up to see a imperial fighter heading right towards her.
She immediately dashed down the cat walk as the first few shots were fired, destroying the controls completely. Another shot hit the cat walk, causing the whole thing to tip sideways, spilling Jyn over the side.
She quickly grabbed onto the grates of the floor, her feet dangling off the cat walk.
She struggled to pull herself up, her arms burning in the process and her breath coming out in short gasps as she got up and kneeled staring through the grates, trying to catch her breath.
She looked across the way to see the controls sitting there, waiting to send the plans.
She clenched her jaw quickly and stood up, seeming to limp towards it as fast as she could, but before she could make it off the cat walk she saw the dreaded white cape, who's grey twin haunted her nightmares. Krennic.
She glared at him valiantly as he aimed his blaster at her with anger alight in his voice. "Who are you?!" She screamed over the wind.
She paused before answering quietly, "you know who I am." She stared at him, with an almost smirk on her face. He met her gaze with nothing of recognition as he kept his gun pointed at her.
"I'm Jyn Erso." She stated and as she did she saw his eyes seem to change slightly. Was that a hint of fear? "Daughter of Galen and Lyra." She continued and his face didn't easily hide his look of shock. "You've lost." She stated with the hint of a smile in her face despite everything.
"Oh I have? Have I?" Krennik asked in disbelief, but you could hear the fear in his voice.
"My father's revenge. He built a flaw in the Death Star. He put a fuse in the middle of your machine and I've just told the entire Galaxy how to light it." She couldn't keep the smugness from her voice as she faced down the gun that he still had pointed at her.
Despite him trying not to react, Jyn saw him clench his jaw in frustration as he grunted, "the shield is still up. Your signal will never reach the rebels. All your ships in here will be destroyed, I lose nothing but time." His fury was becoming apparent as he continued. "You, on the other hand, die, with the rebellion. " He threatened as he began to squeeze the trigger of his blaster.
There was a carbon blast, making Jyn jump as she felt her belly and chest to see if she had been shot, but Krennic had crumbled to the ground.
Jyn looked up to see a tattered Cassian aiming his gun at the hunched shape of Krennic while leaning heavily on the wall of the tower, barely able to stand.
She felt relief swamp over her as she smiled at him and felt her feet want to run straight into his arms, but instead she ran straight for the transmission controls. She used the panel to help her stand as she pulled the lever quickly and the previously irritating voice sang a most glorious song, "Transmitting." It repeated.
Jyn looked over at Cassian who still had his blaster pointed at an unconscious Krennic still unmoving, but he broke his gaze from the villain to look into Jyn's eyes.
She limped over to him quickly and grabbed his arm as she followed his aim to her mother's murderer lying on the ground in front of them.
She felt a rush of anger as she made a move to kick his ass, but Cassian's grip on her arm held her back.
"Leave it. Leave it." He repeated quietly as he pulled her into him harshly. "That's it... let's go." His lips were only just at her temple as he pulled her against him and she turned around to face him.
She took his blaster from his grasp and slipped it into his holster as she grabbed his arm and slung it over her shoulder quickly.
They began to slowly hobble towards the elevator when Cassian struggled to speak.
"Do you think- do you think anybody was listening?" He asked her, looking down at her with his warm brown eyes.
She met his gaze with a smile. "I do. Someone's out there." She said quietly as they both looked out over the edge of the tower and continuing to the elevator.
