Chapter 2 - Plan B
Jyn braced herself as she felt the shuttle land with a shutter. She looked out the glass as the dust settled, revealing imperial officers heading towards the ship.
"Cargo shuttle SW0608, be prepared to receive inspection team." The voice crackled as Jyn's grip shook on the chair and turned to the others in the cock pit.
"Ready?" She asked, unable to stay still any longer as she turned away to get everyone below.
It seemed not even a second had gone by after Bane had made it below the floor as the airlock started to lower.
Jyn took a deep breath as she looked at Cassian who was preparing his gun, ready to ambush the imps that were on their way up the ramp.
"Are you ready?" He asked, his voice sounding just as nervous as she felt.
"As I'll ever be." She answered with a slight smile, her previous conflict with him seeming to fade.
She heard Bodhi greet the inspection team stiffly.
"You're probably looking for a manifest..." Bodhi stated awkwardly as he met the officers.
"That would be helpful..." One of them grunted in a duh tone.
"It's just down here..." He said innocently as he motioned toward the hole in the floor that held our men.
There was a brief struggle as Jyn got up to start down the ladder quickly, Cassian close behind.
When they had hit the ground they were met with uniforms being shoved in their faces.
"No time to lose. Hurry up and put these on." Bodhi directed, "We only have a small window of time."
Cassian nodded in understanding before pushing his way into the backroom where he slipped the officer's uniform over his original clothing, Jyn quickly followed him and slipped her black uniform on numbly.
She couldn't help but crack a smile as she gazed upon the imperial officer Andor as he pulled at the collar of the uncomfortably stiff jacket. She wiped off her expression as she remembered where they were and what they were about to do.
He glanced up from his struggles to look at her briefly, something lit in his eyes, but he looked away as he started into the main area of the shuttle. He seemed to meet the solemn gaze of all of the men before he reached the edge of the ship, Jyn letting him draw ahead of her.
She stopped beside Chirrut who was, as always, looking around blindly, but this time he had a smile on his face. Whether he sensed that they were going to succeed or he had somehow felt the interaction between her and Cassian, she would never know.
She almost jumped when she felt a heavy hand on her back, but she turned to see the soft expression of Baze who spoke quietly, "Good luck... little sister."
He smiled at her comfortingly, and she felt herself return it, surprised with how sincere it actually was.
She tore herself away as she returned to her spot beside Cassian who was attempting to put on his cap awkwardly as she started to push back her hair to put on her helmet. When she finally got it on she realized that visibility seemed almost zero with the bulbous black busby on her head.
She looked to Cassian to tell him she was ready, but stopped when she noticed his millinery was askew.
He gave her a look of confusion as she rolled her eyes and reached up to fix it quickly, thankful that she hadn't put the shade down on the kepi yet so she could actually see what she was doing.
"Thanks." He muttered as she turned away with a nod of satisfaction, ready to march out of the ship, but before she could a hand flew over her face as Cassian pushed button that slid the black shade over her eyes.
Jyn almost groaned as she carefully lead the way down the ramp and toward the base, with K2 bringing up the rear.
Cassian looked strange walking so straight, with his hands firmly placed on his lower back. He knew how to play a militaristic part, that much was obvious.
"935H to transport..." The background voice over the PA seemed to set off Jyn's nerves even more so as they stopped in front of the large blast doors that led into the base.
Cassian looked to the officer by the controls expectantly as the imp pressed a lever, opening the blast doors to the horizontal elevator.
Jyn followed K2 in this time, wanting something large enough to see in the bloody helmet.
She clicked her helmet to lift the shade as they loaded onto the elevator and turned around to face the closing doors, her heart pounding in her chest.
"I've got a bad feeling ab-"
"K-" Cassian warned almost at the same time Jyn snapped, "Quiet."
"What?" K2 sounded confused as the doors slid shut finally and they were whisked backward.
The sudden jolt sent Jyn forward clumsily, on account of her already bad balance. Cassian's hand shot out to steady her, only letting go when he was sure she had gotten used to the speed of the lift.
Seconds later she was thrown backwards into his arms as the lift came to an abrupt halt.
She heard him clear his throat above her as she struggled to stand upright again. She groaned as she felt his hands on her waist to lift her upwards. She could not wait to get this thing off her head, its weight was messing up her equilibrium.
Jyn quickly went to the other side of K2 to wait for the doors to open, ignoring her blush angrily.
"We need a map." Cassian spoke, fixing his cuffs as if to distract him of the incident.
"Well I'm sure there's one just lying about." K2 stated sarcastically, not bothering to look at his companion.
Ignoring his attitude, Cassian sighed, "You know what to do."
The doors finally slid open, and Cassian looked over at Jyn, nodding briefly as she led the way out of the lift.
Soon after being out she felt him smack the switch on her helmet to bring down her visor again as she rolled her eyes in exasperation.
They marched through the base, searching for another one of K2's kind while trying not to look conspicuous.
Finally they spotted one parading past them, looking completely unlike K2's stature despite them being the exact same model of droid.
Jyn led them in a long and inconspicuous circle as they redirected their path to follow the droid, careful to stay decently far behind to prevent them from being detected and labeled suspicious.
At last they were coming closer to a scomp link, where droids used their antennas to plug into the main drive of the base. It was in a crevice located in the middle of an almost empty hall, thankfully.
I noticed K2 had started to draw ahead of me as he tapped on the Imperial droid's soldier to get his attention.
"Excuse me, but where might I find the protocol terminal?" He asked casually, if that was even possible for a robot.
The droid looked at him blankly, but led him into the pocket in the wall that held the computer interface.
Quickly Jyn and Cassian followed them in to see if K2 needed help neutralizing the bot, but he already had the droid's head panel off, ready to extract any needed information.
Cassian looked down at Jyn and shrugged as he moved to stand outside the small room to keep watch for imps, Jyn did the same silently.
Little did they know that K2 was doing more than retrieving the data he needed, he was programming a fail safe into the droid's hard drive as well. He was leaving a copy of himself among its circuits in case his current frame became inoperable.
In simpler terms, if he was destroyed, his persona would be revived in this droid's body, but only when his internal signal stopped transmitting.
In other words, this was K2's plan B because the probability of Cassian having one, was slim to none.
