Nightmare had just finished reading a book he had found that morning. He was sitting in a dark room, on a destroyed throne, full of blood, dust and negativity. The perfect place for him. There was no sound in the vicinity, his subordinates were sleeping, it was very late, but he had no need to sleep. However, unlike Error, he was created with that ability, he was created to be a night guardian, and although he was awake twenty-four hours a day, he used to be less active during the day. He preferred to attack at night, hidden in the shadows.
Night is also the best time to reflect, especially when your only company is silence.
Sometimes he thought nonsensical things, other times battle strategies or plans to get more negativity. Yet, always, at some point of distraction, he thought of the same jet-colored skeleton that much of the Multiverse hated, the destroyer; Error.
Nightmare knew he couldn't think of that kind of stuff. He knew that his love was neither pure nor kind, he knew that the least thing the destroyer needed was to get involved in a love relationship, much less one with the second most hated monster after him. He couldn't be so cruel with the only skeleton that never looked at him with fear and the only one that was always by his side, at all times.
But the need to have him with him was so big. He always blamed his new self for that selfishness that tormented him day by day for fear of hurting the person he loved, however, he knew very well that this had nothing to do with his brutal change of personality, he was sure that if he had been the Nightmare that he was before eating the apples, his thoughts about this situation would have been exactly the same.
He closed his eye, feeling defeated by himself. In that instant, he could swear that the image of a small skeleton appeared in front of him, smiling at him affectionately, with an affection that he believed lost.
Opening it again, he felt as if a part of him had been ripped out, but the pain he felt was not physical, but emotional. He forgot all the good things once he ate the apples, but there was something he could never forget, the support he received, the love and understanding. Actions that would never be repeated.
Error had done so much for him, and he never knew how to pay it back to him.
He could only wish that Error was doing well. Two weeks and still had no contact with him due to an AU's overload.
He sighed, leaning against the back of the throne. There were so many things he would like to repeat, so many things he wanted to erase from the past, and many others to fix. If he had said "I love you" at the time, would any of this have been avoided? Would he have felt better about himself? He just wanted one more chance.
He heard a huge distortion, followed by the opening of a portal in the next room. He got up immediately, the negativity emanating from this monster was so brutal that it could keep him active and powered enough for a month. He approached to the responsible of this, finding a rather pitiful image of the destroyer of AU's.
His dirty and torn clothes, he was full of wounds, fractures and was staining the floor of blood, his blood. They exchanged glances for a few seconds before the glitch decided to sit down, leaning his back against the nearby wall.
"I won't bother you much. I just need to recover for a few minutes and I'll be gone."
Under different circumstances, would he have asked for Nightmare's help? Would he have asked for a hug to feel better? Things could have been very different, or so he wanted to believe. Maybe in another parallel universe, he and Error would have the happiness they deserve, right?
Maybe happiness for him no longer had any meaning, it was no longer necessary and it would only torture him, but Error could still be happy, that's what he wanted most. He wanted Error to be happy by his side.
"You can stay as long as you want." He explained, approaching the glitch, who unconsciously moved away a little. Nightmare stopped. "You don't bother anyone here. Cross likes you, the others like you too."
"They hate me," he interrupted, "and I don't need you to lie. I don't want your pity, or anyone else's. I'm fine ... I only need a few minutes." He settled down again, closing his eyes in the process. His body ached horribly, he had many broken bones, but he didn't want to get involved with anyone, least of all with a highly dangerous group.
Error couldn't deny the love he had for them, but for someone like him it was better to be alone. He had a life full of suffering, openly establishing such close relationships with others was a threat to them and to himself. No one could assure him that Nightmare's group would not betray him at some point. Because of this, his visits were always cautious, expecting a surprise attack at any time, although it had never happened.
"Sure." He replied, expressionless, "As you like."
That was his eternal curse; remember. He remembered everything he lived through before the tree incident, all his pain and all his adventures. He remembered it very well and, as much as he wanted to forget, there was something that always stayed in his mind, the cause of all the bad things in his life.
On the other hand, there was Error. He can't remember anything. According to him, nothing existed before the white. That is his torment, no matter how hard he try, no memory comes to him, that makes him very sad. Was his life never happy? Was he always destined to suffer?
He just couldn't remember anything, and Nightmare believed that was for the best, he was sure that remembering would only hurt more, he knew from experience. But again, a part of him just wanted him to know the whole truth. Perhaps it was a minimal hope that everything would be as before? Or maybe ... another act of selfishness towards the glitch?
Nightmare remained in his position for a few minutes in silence, admiring the destroyer who rested just a few steps from him. In a way, he was flattered to be able to have this opportunity, he knew that he was the only one who could see Error in his most vulnerable state and, although the behavior of the other continued to be gruff and defensive, he wanted to believe that the level of confidence he had towards him was big enough to allow himself to rest like this at his side.
He wanted to help, he wanted to save him from the misery that haunts him, but he didn't know how.
Now he wanted to be his savior, just as Error was once for him.
Several minutes passed before Error decided to stand up. He felt more energetic than before, as the chances of having a break like this, without being disturbed, were scarce. A few minutes were enough to recover some physical energy, because mentally he was still very exhausted. He didn't want to leave yet, Ink should also be exhausted from their last fight, as he didn't feel like an AU had been created recently. What a relief.
He looked at the Guardian, as if silently asking if he could stay by his side for a few more minutes. This wasn't only because the Anti-Void was an unpleasant place to rest, but because he felt very comfortable being with Nightmare in private. His group still hadn't woken up, so it was just the two of them. He knew very well that they both had a silent intimacy. Despite his great fear of being attacked by the entire group, he felt that being alone with the negative self was not dangerous. Still, he wouldn't let his guard down.
Nightmare understood the gesture and simply nodded, heading with his book to a slightly brighter place so that the destroyer felt more comfortable.
Arriving in a living room or something like that, they stopped. Nightmare took a seat immediately, but Error didn't. The glitch stood for a moment before sitting in the couch furthest from the Guardian. This somewhat disappointed him, but he didn't say it out loud.
After all, why did he expect Error to sit next to him? He had to get over it, he had to admit that those moments would never happen again.
He had to forget the past once and for all.
His hands felt warm when the minor of both held them, looking at him curiously, not used to seeing that black matter over the white bones he knew. He showed no fear, which had him baffled and somewhat dazed from reality.
And so it was until he spoke:
"Did it hurt?" But he received no answer, he spoke again, "Don't worry, your appearance doesn't scare me... you are still Nightmare to me."
And then he gave him one of the most beautiful and real smiles he had ever seen ...
How could he forget something he doesn't want to forget?

It took a long time, but I came back with another chapter.
oops.
I'll finish the story, no matter how long it takes.
But I'm sure that I can update quickly if I organize myself well, I need to think a little about my schedule.
I don't even know if I'm writing this well. ¿?
