Chapter 22

"Wake up your going to be late otherwise" I heard Cathy akka wake me up. It was 6am, we all got up quickly and started to do our morning routine, at around 6:30am the beautician came and started with my makeup, I was going to wear a cream banarasi sari which had gold designs on it,   in my family our wedding thread was red unlike the yellow of other customs, the white sari would compliment my wedding thread well.

I laid my sari out and, was asked to eat my breakfast first.

I was too eager and tensed with all butterflies in my stomach as to how is life going to change, I didn't feel like eating anything, especially all the masala stuff I love, like spicy chutney and sambar, made my stomach churn, I wanted to go light on my stomach, I didn't want to look full from eating in the ceremony, so I had a sandwich of butter and sugar.

I sat down to start with the makeup, when my phone rang, "h.hello"

"hello?"I replied almost questioningly

"uhmm,Just wanted to tell you good morning and, waitingtomakeyoumine" Rohan said, the last part in a rapid whisper,

"good morning, what did you tell??in the end?wai, what?? " I played dumb as a blush crept upon my cheeks,

"wai...waiting to see you, don't be late, I got to go" he said a little slowly and carefully so that I don't doubt what he said, but I could feel him blushing through the phone when he disconnected. I looked at his contact picture and chuckled to myself at his craziness.

I kept my phone down and the beautician had started with my foundation, she applied it so well, like it was a massage and I had a good nap. When I got up she was putting the blush on my cheeks, I looked at the mirror, I had gold with pink eye shadow and a lot of make up, I felt like a different person but was very happy with all the effort she had put in. I put on a pinkish red lipstick; so that it matched my makeup.

After that I was ready for my hairdo. It was raised in the front and at the back it had the messy bun effect. I used a wig for the bun so that it looked neat.

I draped my sari, with help of course. I then put my jewelry; it was a gold necklace, a short chain and a long chain, a hip chain, bangles, an armlet, a big jumki, and finally a maroon bindi.

After all was done she finally put on my veil and checked it for its length. My bridesmaids got ready, with their silk suits: the smaller ones wore pattu (silk) paavadai(skirts) and the older ones wore silk half saris.( now a day's brides maids do wear gowns...but I wanted the scene to look traditional)

It was a little past 8am when my relatives and besties came to the room after having their breakfast. All my besties wore saris, and each of them looked so gorgeous. A few my other friends had also joined them, they all came to in and congratulated me.

I was called out and was asked to kneel down, while all who were present came up blest and congratulated me, finally my parents came, ma was emotional and held back her tears, but her expression gave it away, a few of my aunts were also emotional, I tried hard to control my tears, generally if I see someone crying in front of me I start to get tears and now so many people!! Krys somehow sensed the uneasiness and came up to me with all my friends, they hugged me, and also started to teased me that my make up will get spoilt and that if I look bad, Rohan would not want to marry me, we started to laugh and the mood changed to a happy one again.

I was led out to the church, I went to the entrance of the church with my veil over my face, and a bride's bouquet of red and white roses with green branch type plants in my hand.

I saw Rohan smiling at me, my heart fluttered, I went over with the bridesmaids holding my veil," You both have done your confession right??" His uncle asked, and we nodded our heads in agreement."Here put this on" his uncle told, as he handed us our garland.

Rohan wore a black suit with a maroon shirt, his hair was neatly combed, and he had a maroon silk cloth tucked in his suit pocket and a maroon tie. On one hand he held a grooms bouquet and he was making weird things with his other palm (like fisting and releasing, etc)

The priest came and told some prayers and then we were asked to enter, the church was decorated beautifully, especially the aisle with gold netted material forming small arches on the benches, and floral decoration all over. The aisle arch was decorated to match the other decoration and it looked so breathe-taking.

I interlocked my hand at the elbow  with Rohan's as I walked down the aisle, he held my hand reassuringly, with a confidence I really needed but with tender care.

We stood in front of the altar and the mass had begun. It was a usual wedding mass. We were asked to exchange our wedding vows, rings which was a band with small stones on the side.

His ring was similar to mine. We were then asked to tie the knot, it was  a red colored woven thread (thaali), it had a pendant which was coin shaped and had a cross inscribed on it.

Rohan turned to me, holding the thaali, brought his hand on my neck, his touch sent shivers down my spine. The thought that I'm forever his and that my family is no longer the same and that I now have a bigger family, made me emotional and I held back my tears with great difficulty. I closed my eyes so that I could take in this overwhelming feel.

My wedding was finally over!!!

After the mass we stayed back in the church, clicking some snaps.

We entered the hall, hand in hand, I was feeling great, holding  my Jun (Rohan) for the first time, and being married, I no longer have to worry if it's right to be with him, I've vowed that death will do us apart and no one can question us: our closeness  anymore.

It was just too much for me to take. We were again blest, the first time as a couple and I was being addressed as a daughter in law, I was beaming with happiness, they circled in front of us a round steel plate with vermilion and water mixture with a burning camphor, that was done to take away any evil eye off the newly wed.

The water mixture was thrown out and each one of our elder blest us, they put flower petals on us, it was funny the way the petals fell on our face and we kept on laughing as our athais tried to tease us.

We were led inside and had our grand march and watched the way our athais were still shy to walk hand in hand with their husbands, I looked at Rohan and he was as amused as I. They then brought the cake that had four layers, it was chocolate cake and was beautifully decorated with icing.

We cut the cake and fed each other, I noticed a mischievous twinkle in Jun's eyes, I rose my eyebrows mouthing him a 'what' he nodded sideways (nothing) but grabbed my hand, I was drawn to him and my hand hit his chest. I didn't know what to feel: confused, shy, embarrassed (as elders were there) as I was contemplating he held my chin and gave a peck on my cheeks. I was too in shock and my eyes grew wide and my face turned pink. His friends started to whistle. He looked at me, winked and smiled his attractive smile I couldn't help but smile and looked down shyly.

I went to the room and removed my veil, and my stomach started to churn, thinking of Jun. I went out and all the people in the hall came to us as we stood on the stage, we received their blessings and gifts.

After nearly three hours we sat down, an old man came to us along with one of my athai, she told us to follow what was done, he tied my left hand and Jun's right hand together with a white cloth and started to tell some prayers and he put on us, in an orderly fashion, raw rice coated with turmeric, on our head, shoulder, and lap.

We then went to have our lunch; there also, people teased us to feed each other, which we did.

After that was one of the most sorrowful function in a wedding. I went to a room and most of my near and dear came in, I was asked to quickly drape a fancy yellow sari (it always has to be a yellow sari) I went in the center of the crowd of my relatives and all got emotional and cried so much as they blessed me that a few tears slipped from my eyes, after all they were sending me away. After the whole crying, in one end of the sari they put spices and tied it, I then went to the groom's  room and emptied the spices into a glass of water there.

Hey wattpadies..

Finally!!! Yeah...a long update ryt?

Thaali is the thread with the pendant

The spices in the end of the sari, traditionally, as they send the daughter from her home they tie that to her pallu and she has to go to her in law's place and put it in their well, or pot of water, but now as many don't have well, and there is less time to finish the rituals, its just a glass of water which is in the groom's side.

The story is not over.
