The Bad-Boy

Moonlight streamed in from the open bedroom window, coating the floor in an incandescent white glow. The lights were low and music thumped from down below, laughter could be heard just outside the door. I blinked my eyes twice and tried to asses my situation. The room I was in looked like a teenage boy's paradise and I felt myself cringe.

I have been stuck in worse places.

Before I could further contemplate my predicament, a young couple burst through the door. They clawed at each other's clothes and started ripping them off and I had to smack my hand over my mouth to stop the bile from spilling out. Their mouths tried to eat one another and my eyes darted to the window. If I jumped out, I'd be sure to fall to my novel death.

"No! God, no, please! What have I done to deserve this?"

To be sucked into a book is one thing, to be sucked into a teen romance novel with an overzealous bad boy admits another notch, well that sounded like eternal damnation to me.

The boy, that I guessed to be eighteen, swung in my direction and his eyes went wide, "Who the hell are you?"

I rolled my eyes at his fake bravado while a girl with blonde hair clung to his arm. My eyes darted to hers and I couldn't help the strong urge to strangle her. I mean who stupidly goes to a guy's room at a party? Oh yeah, the loose bimbo that is always full on in teen novels. Aside from the MC, every other girl in these books is usually portrayed as cheap and easy.

Oh, I'll get to you next, but first...

I pointed a finger to the girl, "You, out now! Or I'm calling your mother!"

Her blue eyes widened before she grabbed her discarded clothing and bolted from the room.

"What the hell! Who do you think you are?"

I felt my patience thinning out and took a deep breath through my nose, "Right, well you can call me The Reader. Now it seems to me I get sucked into stories where the characters are having a crisis. Technically, I don't exist in this world."

He shook his head, mostly in denial, "Well, can you get your non-existent butt out of my room so I can get laid?"

"Ah see there's the problem. I can't leave until you sort out your character crisis. So I'm stuck here until then."

He pulled a cellphone from his jean pocket and started scrolling through. The light from the phone bathed is faced in shadows as he frowned. He remained silent and I balled my fists at my side.

"What are you doing?" I asked with clenched teeth.

"I'm checking to see if there is a mental hospital nearby. I think you might have escaped."

My mouth fell open and I felt heat flush my cheeks. Oh, no he didn't! I marched up to him and grabbed the phone from his hands and tossed it onto the bed.

"Hey! You can't do that!"

I waggled my eyebrows, "I just did."

He grabbed my arm and started pulling me along. I dug my heels into the carpet but I was no match for his towering frame. To be fair, I have always been quite short but this brute was manhandling me! With his other arm, he pulled open the bedroom door and proceeded to shove me into the hallway.

"Okay crazy, go find your home!" he said before slamming the door in my face.

I turned around, my blood boiling as I launched myself at the door. A lock clicked into place and I gritted my teeth. I can't believe he threw me out! I blinked my eyes once and when they opened I found myself back in the bedroom. Staring at the asshole as he had his ear pressed against the door. A smile spread on my mouth when I realized that he wouldn't be able to escape me. Thank you, Karma!

"You might want to check behind you."

He yelped and spun around, eyes wide in disbelief. If only I had a camera, his face right now is priceless.

His head swiveled between me and the door, "How did... but you were... what?"

I laughed, "Told you so! I don't exist in this world or at least not outside of this bedroom."

"Fine! Then I'll leave."

"You have one of two choices here. Stay and entertain the craziness for about an hour. Or leave and I can just pop back in every time you," I pointed both my index fingers at him, "try to get it on."

His eyes went wide as dinner plates and I cackled like a hyena.

"Fine, if that's what it takes for you to leave."

I waggled my eyebrows and a shit-eating grin decorated my face. Ah, the sweet, sweet taste of victory.

"So, what's the point of bringing a girl here? Do you even like her?" I asked.

He frowned, "Was I supposed to like her?"

"Yeah, you should like the person you get intimate with! Or at least respect them enough not to do it at some random party."

"I'm a bad boy. That's kinda my thing."

"Doesn't have to be if that's not what makes you happy."

He rolled his eyes, "I'm brooding and bad, I'm supposed to be wounded not happy."

I walked to him and grabbed his arm, he didn't put up a fight as I dragged him in the hallway. Around the corner, we stopped at the banister and watched a sea of teens dancing to a lively beat. All the furniture was pushed against the wall as a bunch of teens loitered everywhere.

It's official, this is my worst nightmare come to life. Music pulsated from two loudspeakers on the other side of the room on the first floor. From this vantage point, I could see all of the party-goers.

I scanned the crowd looking for the one thing that will always be out of place at a party like this. The wallflower. My eyes landed on a girl at the back, standing pressed against the wall like she was about to be swallowed by it.

I pointed her out to my new not-so-friend, "Her, she's the MC."

"The what?"

I rolled my eyes, "The Main Character. The love interest. The one who always breaks the bad boy. So, do you like her?"

He frowned, "You mean Jenny? Uh, sure she's nice and I'm supposed to like her, I guess."

The hesitation in his voice gave me pause. This was usually how it ended up, bad boy likes wallflower. Changes for her and boom, they fall in love. I paused and studied his face as his gaze flicked over to a guy playing beer pong with a rowdy group of teen boys.

Beer pong guy must have felt our stares because his eyes swung up and landed on Bad Boy. A look passed between them before Beer pong guy gave a shy smile that colored his cheeks in red.  Bad Boy cleared his throat and looked away as if he was not supposed to be caught staring.

So that's it then!

"You like him! Not Jenny! Why are you not there right now talking to him?"

"Because I'm supposed to like her," he said pointing to Jenny.

"To hell with the plot! You like him and he likes you. Go my little buttercup and be free!"

He sighed, "God, you're weird. I still like girls too."

I took a deep breath, it killed me when people didn't listen to their characters! Let them drive the narrative, only then will they become real.

"Listen, you can like both. But the way you two are looking at each other, that could be more than like."

He looked at me as if seeing me for the first time and smiled. The harsh lines of his face fell away to reveal someone who looked almost shy. I smiled back and he started walking around the banister before he stopped and looked back at me. I gave him an encouraging nod.

"You better be gone when I get back!" he shouted.

I laughed, "Whatever you say, weirdo!"

He lifted one eyebrow, "Says the girl wearing a unicorn onesie at a house party."

My eyes widened and a blush crept over my face. When I looked back at him he laughed again. I narrowed my eyes, but he was right. It's time this unicorn went to bed.
