Chapter 1
Ashlyn dazed drowsily as she turned the next page of her book. It was Alice in Wonderland, and Alice was following the timid white rabbit to the rabbit hole. Ashlyn smiled. She loved Alice in Wonderland, because of its beautifully crafted world full of fantasy and strange creatures. She enjoyed every part of it, from the Cheshire cat, to the mad hatter. Deciding it was time to take a break from the book, Ashlyn stood up and walked to her garden grotto, leaving her book behind in the tall grasses. The garden grotto had to be Ashlyn's favorite place in the world. It was an indoor garden, and it was where Ashlyn's parents grew all of their delicious vegetables they ate. Ashlyn's family were the hard working type, that loved to do everything themselves. They took pride in what they did. Ashlyn opened the door to the room, and had to squint as the sun's beautiful rays chorused with the greenhouses pale glass. She was greeted with the smell of periwinkle roses and peppery onions. As she walked inside, Ashlyn brushed the tips of her fingers to the hanging daisies on the walls. She walked in between the rows of vegetables and observed each one, to see how they were growing. She loved her garden grotto. Her parents did too. Even animals would come to take a nibble out of plants her family left around, so the critters wouldn't go straight for the plants that were still blooming. It marveled everyone how animals were even able to slip into the enclosed room. Ashlyn's family had all types of creatures visit, from small squirrels to even deer. Stray cats had made several appearances, and sometimes Ashlyn is even able to catch a glance at a few-
Rabbits. Ashlyn stopped in her tracks when she noticed her black leather flats had been soiled in dirt. In fact, a whole trail of dirt led to the back of the greenhouse. "That's strange..", she murmured as she started to walk slowly along the trail. As she turned the corner of the row of vegetables she was in, she found the source of the dirt. A huge, 5 foot wide rabbit hole had been dug next to the glass wall of the garden grotto. Ashlyn marveled at the sight, and couldn't process how it could have been made by rabbits. It was very big. I could fit in there, Ashlyn thought with interest. She walked closer to the trench, and leaned over to peer into it, trying to determine where it ended and how deep it was. It must have been pretty far down, since all she could see was pitch black. Ashlyn shrugged as she backed away. "I might as well tell mom and dad. It could be dangerous having a random hole around", Ashlyn said as she turned around to leave. However, once she turned around, she didn't move. She stood there, staring wide eyed, at a sight she couldn't believe. Standing before her was a thin black rabbit. However, it wasn't like any rabbit she'd seen before. The rabbit was oversized and standing like a human, on the tips of its toes, and was dressed in an intricate outfit, and adorned with pale scrolls, bottles with powders of all colors, and more pocket watches Ashlyn had ever seen in one place. Ashlyn froze in her tracks with her mouth hanging open. The rabbit seemed to be fixed in a position also, but managed to tilt its head and blink. Ashlyn jumped back, but didn't scream, although she thought she would. However, she let out a yelp as one of the rabbit's clocks broke the silence with loud ringing. With that, the rabbit bounded away and slid into one of the isles of the greenhouse. Ashlyn gasped and ran after the rabbit, although the logical thing to do was run away from a human like rabbit. As the animal scurried into isle after isle, Ashlyn pleaded it to stop. "Wait!" she called after it as she chased it down the corridor. But the rabbit didn't stop. Fortunately, Ashlyn knew every corner of the garden grotto, and predicted the hall would come to an end. Regardless, the rabbit didn't stop. It kept running with Ashlyn following close behind until it was nearing the back of the greenhouse. Ashlyn ran as hard as she could until her hands could grip the flying coattails of the rabbit's handcrafted jacket. However, a mound of dirt sent her flying to the ground as she tripped near a trail of soil. A trail of soil leading to-
The rabbit hole. Ashlyn gasped as she struggled to get to her feet. She winced at the sight of a newly formed bruise on her elbow, but ignored the pain. " Hey! Slow down! If you don't stop you'll fall-" She yelled wearily. However the rabbit didn't stop, and skidded to and fro all over the glass until it was sliding clearly into the direction of the deep hole. Ashlyn finally gathered the strength to stand up and run after the rabbit. "Wait!" she cried. The rabbit suddenly stopped in its tracks, inches away from the rabbit hole. It turned around, and blinked blankly, although Ashlyn thought it looked as if it were staring into her very soul. "There's no time to wait," the rabbit said, with a voice cold and smooth. Ashlyn hunched backward, terrified at the fact that the animal could talk. "Hurry up," the rabbit whispered.
"Hurry up or you'll be late."
And with that, the rabbit leaped into the dark, deep hole. Ashlyn suddenly blinked back to life. "Late for what?!" she yelled. But no one could hear her, because she too, had fallen in.
