Nothing's Wrong (She's Just in Love)
Nothing's Wrong (She's Just in Love)
A/N: It's been quite a while since I wrote a "Trolls" one-shot, so I thought I could do this little piece that I've been putting on the backburner for way too long. Hopefully, it's worth it. Consider this my holiday present for you readers of my "Trolls" stories.
So I got this idea way back when I watched that Trollstopia episode, I think it was the first episode of Season... 6, I want to say. Yeah, Season 6, Episode 1A.
There was that one scene with Poppy and R&B that got me thinking. With that thought in my head, I began to sort of come up with a sequel to another one of my one-shots called "Unintentional Secret". But due to school, health and other things that life could throw at me, I had to put it on the back burner for a while.
But recently, after watching "Trolls Band Together" to reignite my Trolls inspiration, and watching that particular "Trollstopia" episode again, I got enough mojo to finally make a big push on this one-shot and finish it. So here's how it will work.
On Fanfiction.net, I will post it with "Unintentional Secret" since it ties into it as a sequel of sorts. And here on Wattpad, I will put it in my one-shot collection there.
Now that I have all of that out of the way, here we go! And action!
When the crazy weather finally cleared up after almost an entire day of being stuck indoors, R&B made a decision. Something about their time with Poppy during the bubble storm wasn't clicking in right. And it wasn't her hoarding issue. However, this seemed like this was something that needed a few other opinions.
Within minutes, they, along with Holly, Val, and Satin and Chenille since they knew Poppy longer than any of them did; were in Val's Rock cave.
"So anyone guessing why we're here?" The female Rock Troll asked, sounding bored.
"Okay, we called this all-girls' meeting for a reason." Rhythm said. "You see, when me and Blues got stuck with Poppy during that bubble storm, something happened that seemed a little suspicious."
"What are y'all talking about?" Holly asked.
"Well, it started when we wanted to help Poppy with her little... uh, oversaving mementos problem." Blues began to explain. "We offer to help her do some cleaning by opening a portal to the trash dimension."
"But when B showed her these two lollipop sticks with the wrappers wrapped around the ends, Poppy, eh..." Rhythm trailed off as she and her sister recalled that particular moment.
Flashback
Poppy stared with amazement at the portal that had opened in her pod. It was always really cool whenever the Funk Trolls showed off their impressive technology, far beyond anything she and the other Pop Trolls had ever seen. Well, the only other Troll she knew who was good with building and technology was a certain someone named-
"How about these old lollipop sticks?" Blues asked, cutting Poppy off from her train of thought as she looked over at the yellow Funk Troll holding up a pair of old lollipop sticks, the wrappers wrapped around the eaten ends; one of them red and the other purple.
"They can go, right?" Blues continued to ask.
Poppy gasped in horror when she immediately recognized those sticks. "NO!" She exclaimed, quickly snatching them as memories from her teen years came back to her.
"No, no, no." She added, sounding much more calmly as those memories played through her head, bringing back her upbeat demeanor with a touch of softness. "These are from the first time I had candy with Branch. I had cherry. He had unflavored."
A blush came on her cheeks as the memory continued to play. When she and Branch were still teenagers, she made such an effort to try and at least keep him in one area for more than two minutes so that she could talk to him. He was always trying to slip away whenever the young princess had him in her sights. Looking back on it now, she could understand why he was always trying to stay away; it must have been kind of embarrassing having the princess try to chase you down like a lovestruck cuddlepup.
Anyway, that day, she had managed to find him outside of the village, taking a break from collecting sticks. Before he could make an attempt to escape again, she had offered him the purple wrapped lollipop, saying that she only wanted to share a little treat with him. The then gray Troll was a little dubious of her offer, but complied. After he put the stick in his mouth, he noticed something off about it.
"I just taste sugar." He had said, pulling the stick out for a moment to see the colorless candy.
"I, uh, I didn't know what flavor you liked." Poppy had explained, brushing her bangs away from her face and fiddling with the remaining lollipop. "And I didn't want to make you even more grumpy by choosing the wrong one, so I, uh, had this one made... especially for you."
She didn't know why it happened back then, but she felt like her cheeks were blazing as she explained the purpose of the unflavored lollipop to Branch. He looked at her somewhat impressed, probably because he didn't know that there was such a thing as unflavored candy, before looking down at the candy stick in his hand and stuck it back inside his mouth.
"Next time, just ask." He had said. "But I appreciate your thoughtfulness."
Poppy had smiled widely. This was the closest thing to a 'thank you' or a compliment that she had ever gotten from the gray Troll. And they said that he was rude and grumpy all the time. Luckily, she managed to keep herself from squealing and rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet as she unwrapped her own cherry flavored lollipop and stuck it in her mouth.
"So, do you have a favorite lollipop flavor?" She had asked him before rolling the candy over her tongue.
Branch lightly fiddled around with the stick in his mouth before pulling it out. "...Blueberry." He eventually answered before quickly popping the candy back inside.
Poppy let that thought linger in her head as she continued to suck on the cherry lollipop in her mouth. Blueberry flavor. Huh.
The two of them soon had their lollipops gone, and Poppy offered to throw them away. Branch just nodded, picked up his sticks and bade her farewell as he headed deeper into the woods. Poppy stared down at the sticks and wrappers in her hands before wrapping the colorful foils around the sticky, eaten ends of their respective sticks and stuck them in her hair. No way she was going to throw them away now, now that she had finally shared candy with Branch. She'll just put them away for the time being until she finds a safe place for them.
As Poppy was enjoying the little trip down memory lane, R&B were sharing a confused glance with each other. "Girl, what's wrong with you?" The purple Funk sister asked.
But Poppy didn't seem to hear her as she sighed happily and spun around on one foot, giggling. She then skipped over to her drawer and placed the sticks inside. At least now she knows the perfect place for them now that she remembered those sticks and the memory that came with them. She's adding them to her Branch scrapbook, the one she had secretly started after their Bergen Town adventure and was adding to like crazy after they had started dating.
They still haven't told anyone yet, other than Peppy. After all, he of all Trolls should know that his daughter is dating, and that he should know who is the lucky guy. Needless to say, he was thrilled by the news. Poppy was relieved that her dad was all for her and Branch's relationship, and more so that he didn't say anything that would scare him off when she eventually invited Branch over for dinner to "formally meet" her dad.
She was really afraid that her dad would start asking them awkward questions, like if they were planning on getting married. Not that the idea didn't sound absolutely wonderful, but they had just started dating. Not even a month together, and that kind of question pops up? Oooh, she would be mortified and Branch would lock himself in the bunker for a year until the embarrassment fades away. Maybe even longer, knowing how socially awkward he still is, even if he's getting better at it. Old habits die hard.
The pink Pop queen was so lost in that memory as she landed on her back on her bed that she didn't acknowledge Rhythm and Blues sharing another confused and suspicious glance with each other. Poppy didn't even hear them as she started humming under her breath a familiar tune that held a precious spot in her heart. As she did, the memory that came with it started playing in her mind's eye.
Poppy: And I see your true colors
Shining through.
I see your true colors....
End of Flashback
After their story, most of the girls were also a little confused by Poppy's reaction. "Yeah. And?" Val wanted a little more elaboration.
Blues huffed in annoyance. "So after the storm ended, R and I did a little digging." She said. "Needless to say, this wasn't the first time she acted like this."
"Uh, who?" Val asked.
"We're talking about Poppy, that's who!" Rhythm exclaimed.
"What about her?" Holly asked.
"She sure is acting weird lately!" Rhythm pointed out.
"I'll say!" Blues agreed. "Spinning in circles! Practically dancing on air!"
"That girl is up to her hair in something!" Rhythm added before she started to sing. As she sang the first part, the other girls started to recall instances with Poppy when she was acting strange, even for her; and they began to join in.
Rhythm: She's dizzy and she's dreamy.
Val: Her mind tends to roam.
Blues: Her eyes have gone all gleamy,
It's like there's no one home.
Rhythm, Val & Blues: She spends away the days
Mopin' on the party shelf.
Chenille: You ask her where she's goin',
She giggles like a fool.
Holly: She barely sticks a toe in
Down at the swimming pool.
Satin: It's more than just a phase.
Face it, she's just not herself.
Val: Is she ill?
Blues: Or insane?
Rhythm: Is it water on the brain?
Val, Blues, & Rhythm: What has got her bothered so?
Chenille: It's the bends!
Holly: It's the flu!
Satin: Gosh, I wish we had a clue!
Suddenly, it was like a lightning bolt hit them all in the head as they soon recognized Poppy's weird behavior. Something that all women know about when they see or experience the signs.
All: Oh, wait! Oh, dear!
Good grief! It's clear!
She's in love!
She's in love!
Pounding heart! Ringing bells!
Rhythm: Then why is she followin' the rules of no "kisses and tells"?
Val, Blues & Rhythm: She's in love! (Chenille, Satin & Holly: In love and it's divine!)
She's in love! (That girl's high up on cloud nine!)
Glory be!
All: Gods above!
Gotta be she's in love!
"Poppy's in love?!" Holly squealed. "That's so wonderful!"
"But why hasn't she told anyone about it?" Satin asked.
"Even us?" Chenille added, gesturing between her and her twin sister. "We've known Poppy for years! Ever since we were little trollings! We thought that she would tell us if she ever got her eye on someone."
"Well, there was that one time with Cree-" Satin was cut off by her sister covering her mouth.
"That time with you-know-who doesn't count for two reasons." Chenille reminded her twin. "One, it was pretty obvious, so there was no need for her to tell us. And two, it ended badly before anything even began, so I'd say she avoided a major catastrophe."
"Do you know of anyone else she would tell this to if not us?" Val asked.
"Well, there are a couple of other Trolls." Satin said. "There'd be Smidge, Suki-"
"Suki!" Chenille immediately noticed the red Pop Troll outside of the cave. She and her sister quickly zipped outside and came back with Suki in their arms.
"Hey, Suki." The blue fashionista twin said to the disc jockey. "Did you notice anything weird about you-know-who?"
She and the other girls all peeked out the entrance of the cave and saw Poppy skipping around outside, actually looking kind of dressed up. Her hair was styled nicely, she was wearing a pretty purple dress, and a matching headband with blue and red flowers. In her hands was a little basket filled with tons of strawberry and blueberry cupcakes wrapped in a pretty yellow blanket.
"You mean Poppy?" Suki asked, gesturing over to her best friend outside the cave. "I'll say!" Then she too started to sing.
DJ Suki: She acts like she don't see me.
She doesn't even speak.
She sorta treats me like green tea
Left over from last week.
You see her late at night,
Tossin' in her plush-soft bed.
As the other girls started to vocalize, Suki continued singing as she looked over at the pink queen skipping over to a nearby hill. While she sang, she began to recall some other instances in the past month where Poppy was acting weird.
Suki: She's moody as a snapper,
Oblivious as rocks.
You come right up and tap her—
All: She lays there like in shock!
Suki: As sure as grossums bite,
Somethin's made her lose her head!
Girls: She has lost her head!
Suki: And she sighs, and she swoons,
And she's hummin' little tunes.
Girls: Even has a sorta glow.
The girls then all looked out the window and saw that it was true. The smile on Poppy's face as she stood on the hilltop was pretty much radiating happiness. So much that if it was dark outside, she'd be glowing like a beacon. While Suki was still a little confused, since the other girls already came to the conclusion; they knew that Poppy was waiting for someone.
Suki: What on earth could it be?
Girls: Any glitter head can see!
Val and Holly: That sigh!
Satin & Rhythm: That glow!
Chenille & Blues: That swoon!
When they were done pointing out the clues, Suki came to the same realization that they did.
Suki: Oh, no!
She's in love! (Girls: She's flipped, it never fails!)
She's in love! (All hot, down to her nails!)
All of them could see how Poppy was almost sweating buckets with anticipation, like every pore of her skin was ready to burst. She was either really anxious or really excited, although the latter was starting to seem more like it.
See her hips
How they swish!
Just then, the girls saw a flash of dark blue on the other end of the hill, out of their sight but not out of Poppy's. Suddenly, it was as if her anxiousness had disappeared like a puff of dandelions in the wind, and a more calm excitement took its place. However, her smile was still just as bright, possibly even more so as she walked down the hill to meet her apparent beau.
Girls: Well, well, well,
Don't you wonder
Who's the lucky sweet-tooth dish?
The other Music Trolls besides the Pop Trolls were a little confused by this phrase in the beginning when they first came to Pop Village. However, it started to make more sense when they saw their daily diet; their giant sweet tooth diet. Eventually, the phrase grew on them.
Suki: She's in love! (Girls: She found a handsome hunk!)
She's in love! (And now she's as good as sunk!)
See her blush!
All: See her grin!
Gotta be love she's in!
Everyone then started to picture Poppy together with her special Troll, although the more they thought about it, the more they started to get an idea about who that Troll might be. After all, there was only one Troll that she would be with all the time. And that tuft of dark blue hair seemed to further strengthen their theory, and they even could picture the Troll's handsome face; sparkling blue eyes and a knowing, confident smile.
Suki: Poppy-and-someone-special
Sittin' in a tree!
K-I-S-S-I-N-G!
Girls: Her cheeks could not flush pinker!
Suki: It's clear as H2O!
Girls: She's caught – hook, line and sinker!
Chenille, Satin and Blues: Crushed out!
Val, Holly and Rhythm: Switched on!
Chenille, Satin and Blues: Worked up!
Val, Holly and Rhythm: Far gone!
Suki: Knocked down!
Girls: Hard hit!
Suki: In deep!
All: That's it!
Girls: She's in love!
She's in love!
Suki: She's in love!
Then all of them came out of the cave, singing and dancing.
All: She's in love!
She's in love!
Plain to see!
No mistake!
Look at those moonbeams in her wake!
Obvious what they must be symptoms of—
She's in love!
She's in love!
She's in love!
Yeah, she's in love!
Yeah, yeah!
After the musical number, Val then asked, "So are we gonna follow Poppy and see who the lucky guy is?"
The other girls then realized that they were so caught up in the musical number that by now, Poppy was long gone with her date. They then all groaned in annoyance and fell to the ground, almost in an anime-style.
*************
Meanwhile, over on her date, Poppy suddenly got the feeling that she was being watched before she met up with her boyfriend. She then giggled to herself when she got a feeling that they had missed their chance to see if they could spy on her.
"What's so funny?" Branch asked her, wiping some blueberry frosting off her cheek and licking it off his finger.
"Oh, nothing." Poppy assured him, trying to hide her blush at his smooth move that got her insides feeling like jelly. "But I am getting the feeling that it won't be long before others start to get curious about us."
"Good point." Branch agreed. "So when do you want to tell others besides your dad? Things seem to be going along great in Trollstopia."
"I'm thinking of telling the girls during our next Girls' Night." Poppy said. "What about you? Do you want to tell our guy friends?"
"Well, we don't exactly have a Guys' Night." Branch admitted.
"Then maybe in order to tell the rest of our friends that we're a thing now, maybe you should." Poppy suggested.
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Branch asked.
"It sounds like a great idea." Poppy affirmed, but then noticed the uneasy look on her boyfriend's face. "But are you going to be comfortable with it?"
Branch was silent for a few moments before he took a deep breath through his nose. "Hey, if I can host a party in my bunker, then I think I can host a Guys' Night."
Poppy smiled proudly at him. He really had come such a long way since his in-Troll-vert days.
"That's my guy." She cooed playfully before interlacing their fingers together.
Branch just blushed and rolled his eyes with a playful smile, lightly squeezing her fingers in his. "So where do you think you want to hold your next Girls' Night?" He asked.
Poppy thought about it for a moment. "Well, I do want all of my girl friends to know about us." She admitted.
Branch raised a brow. "All of them?" He asked.
Poppy nodded. "All of them." She said, and maybe, this could be a chance for a redo with Holly and Val.
The last time they had met a Bergen, they were pretty scared out of their wits. But maybe if the next Girls' Night was being hosted in Bergen Town, maybe it could show them, and the other Music Troll girls she's friends with, that it was just a one-off incident. And maybe she could get some answers as well. Maybe Bridget or Gristle knows about the Bergen living in the woods, and help him come to the same realization that the rest of Bergen Town came to.
A/N: You see what I mean this sort of serves as a sequel to "Unintentional Secret"? Just by that ending, I somewhat have a basis for a third and final part of that particular story. No promises on when that will come, it just depends on what inspires me. And just because this has a song in it, it doesn't mean that it will be in "Feeling the Love Tonight" collection, unfortunately. Since it's more connected to "Unintentional Secret", that's where it will go; here in this separate collection.
The song that I used for this one-shot is "She's in Love" from the Broadway version of "The Little Mermaid". I just love that song! That was the song that got me wanting to see the musical when I was younger. However, as much as I love it, I don't own it in any way or form. All credit goes to their rightful owners.
Well, hopefully I'll see you guys soon! Please leave a comment about what you think, and remember to stay healthy! And warm, if you live somewhere that's pretty chilly during this time of year.
Got to fly! ;)
