Chapter 1: "My Name Is Rey"

It was just another day spent in the small town named Jakku, stealing and scavenging for Unkar, the infamous slave master that roamed the southern side of the Alderaan.

With all her skills though, it had been a rough day for Rey. It was almost dusk and she didn't find anything, couldn't steal anything.

Rey was a girl of eighteen, scrawny but fair of skin. Her brown hair was pulled back in three messy buns, and her face was dotted with tiny freckles. She wore a dirty white cloth over her mouth that hid her from people's view. And everything she was dressed in, were just rags.
She had found a pair of leather pants so long ago, that now they were slashed right beneath her knees. Her boots were scratched, and they were split up in front, so she would get wet every time it rained a bit. The stretched green linen tunic she wore was cut right beneath her chest, revealing her belly. She had noticed the long stares men were giving her, but she had nothing to cover herself with.

Across her back there was strapped a long staff she used to fend for herself when anyone threatened to hurt her. It did happen much, indeed. And sometimes it would even be her fellow slaves.

As she reached the edge of the town, she slumped down against a ruined stone wall with the face to the forest. She was well aware that she had walked far from Unkar's camp, but she didn't want to go back either. She had found nothing to give him today, and she knew what was going to happen, what her master always threatened her with. She looked over the horizon and watched as the sun was slowly drowning in the pine forest that bordered the western side. The night was approaching and she knew what was coming along with it. She had never been in that situation before, she had always had something to give her master, even if a small thing. But now she had nothing, and she knew he would force her to lay with him. It had happened to a friend of hers.

She hugged her knees tightly to her chest and began to sob. And the chances to steal something now were growing low.

Rey tool her mask off, beneath her chin, and her fingers fumbled at the pebbles that covered the ground beneath the wide stone wall. The wind that blew softly was wiping the tears away from her face for her.

She needed to find something... A solution... She could flee, she could do it now. Only that she had tried it once, and she didn't even get too far, that two of Unkar's men caught her.

No... She could do something better... Go back to the camp and play along her master's plans. Then it would be easy. She had no fewer that fifteen knives, one of them would definitely be within her reach. All of them stolen. She couldn't endure giving one to her master, for she knew the day would come when she would need them.

I must not cry! She wanted to yell at herself as she gritted her teeth and hugged her knees even tighter. But this time, it wasn't because of sadness, but because of frustration. She had always been strong, she couldn't give up now. She had been dealing with new and terrible things ever since her parents had sold her to Unkar at only five years old. She never knew how it had truly been, but from what she had heard, she supposed it was that way.

She got up, and stood straight, chin high and fists clenched, a powerful look on her face. The sun gleamed red and orange and golden behind her as it set, making her glow in that light.

Rey made for the other side of the small poor town with sure paces. But she didn't hesitate to throw a glance here and there, in chance there might still be someone she could steal from.

Her eyes searched eagerly the houses and the market and the yards... And she saw it, her next target.

Quick like a snake, she told herself. She crouched down, and walked to the wooden fence there, an old lady stood, talking to a man.
    It was her chance.

She did not fail at stealing, it was like a sixth sense for her. She made her approach slowly, carefully, with steady paces.

Rey bit her lower lip when she was close enough to the woman's satchel to grasp it. She sat with her back to the wall, and hoped the shadows the stones cast across the alley would shelter her.

But suddenly a voice made her jump away, startled.

"You!" the man barked, pointing at Rey. "Filtly, bloody thief... This time is the last time you had a chance to this spectacle." and he sprang after her.

But she was faster. She threw a glance over her shoulder to see the man keeping up with her. So she had to veer to her right and jump over a high wall. She took advance, and when she was within reach, she placed a palm flat on the hard stone and swung her legs over in the air.

Then, only after she ran more, she was sure she had lost him at that wall. "He was far too fat to jump over it." she said as she gazed back.

It was almost dark by the time she reached the forest. There was nothing in the world that could scare Rey. Yet this has always seemed scary to her. And now, she was even more scared.

As her paces drove her to the fire that was cracking and casting its light in the clearing of the camp, her instincts told her to run away from it.

And as she tilted her head up to look at the starry sky that glittered through the thick branches, it seemed that even the trees wanted to harm her.

To gain more courage, she gripped the hilt of the knife at her belt. This one was the dearest thing she had got. She had won it in a fight against one man who had tried to take advantage of her. And she was proud of it. The blade was long and curved, the hilt was a fine one, made of polished oak wood, encrusted with an emerald.

There was always noise when Unkar and his men gathered around the fire for the night. A noise so loud, that she thought it reached the Royal City. And a heavy smell of drink was hanging in the air, and made Rey cough. Even though she drank a lot, too.

But as she stepped into the clearing, all the noise stopped, and the men turned their heads in her direction. There was only one other girl with them, sitting in Unkar's lap.

Rey let out a heavy breath and let go of the grip on her knife, slowly, as her master stood up, roughly throwing the girl away. She felt him pinning her with his gaze, right there where she stood.

Instinctively, she took a pace back. But he took three toward her. Her fear told her to run, but it was too late now. Her only escape was the knife at her belt, after she had played his dirty games.

She tried so hard to be strong, fierce like a wolverine, but her fear would make her walk back. And she stumbled on a root, but with three more paces, Unkar's large, calloused hand was clasped around her throat, blocking her wind pipe.

He pinned her against a tree, and lifted her off the ground. Rey's face twisted in fear as she gasped for air.

Unkar was a huge man, fat and stout, but strong enough. His coarse beard tickled Rey, and his patched eye scared her the most. He was bald, and he bore the mark of a hammer on his skin. This was why it was said that he had lost his wits then.

His breath reeked of alcohol when his mouth came close to Rey's face. She snapped her head to the other side, her nose smirking in disgust.

Then his monstruos face came into view. How she hated him! The man who had destroyed more than half of her life. She hated him, she wanted him dead. Oh, yes, that was her greatest desire, to be free of him once and for all. To stab him, steal a horse, and run away. Away from all this miserable life and start over.

Her eyes shot him burning daggers when he drew back to look upon her, a drunken smirk on his face. And she wished those daggers were real.

"Do you hate me that much, sweetling?" he asked her.

But in spite of his question, she slammed her forehead in his nose. And when he drew back, surprised, she was even more proud to see that he was bleeding.
Yet the hit that landed on her was not gentle. He punched her hard in the stomach, making her want to thrown up. But she didn't have what to. And thinking about this, she remembered it had been three days since she had last put something in her mouth.

"How dare you talk back to me, stupid bitch!?"

And she only glared at him, afraid that if she would talk, it would be just a sweet kiss of her knife at his throat. But it was not the moment now.

"What did you bring me today, sweetling?" he asked her in his faked voice. "Or is it true what I suppose, that you have nothing to give today."

And her defiant eyes never left him.

"Or maybe you do have something to give... Remember what I told you if it happens to find nothing until dusk? Do you remember, sweetling?" he asked her again and placed a hand, brushing her neck.

But she snapped it away angrily in disgust.

"Of course you remember." he retreated his hand. "Now come along and do your duty."

And he grabbed her by the arm. And Rey resisted any reckless move that could cost her life. Not now, she kept telling herself.

"I'll take her to my tent." Unkar told his men. "You take care of the fire."

But one tall, large man, stood up abruptly. "What about us? Are we worth nothing?"

"You will all have a taste of her when I'm done."

And he turned away, laughing with the others and saying cruel japes about Rey.

Rey squeezed her eyes and tried to remain calm. If she lost her calm, she lost everything.

As they were inside the tent, he pinned her roughly against a wall, and began to fumble beneath her tunic. Rey's face twisted when she felt his mouth on her face, then down on her neck. It disgusted her. It disgusted her more than anything.

"You're sweeter than anyone I've had before!" he said as his hand unlaced her tunic. And brushed against her skin.

And then, he bit at her collarbone, and she yelped.

   "Go to hell!" she yelled.

"Quiet, Arya!" he growled at her.

She glared at him before hissing, "My name is Rey!"

And now, this was when she would do her part. She leaned her head back, pretending she enjoyed his touch. But with her free hand, she fumbled at her breeches, until her fingers ground against wood. She grasped her long-bladed knife, and drew it slowly, in the most silent manner.

She tried to avoid averting her eyes, that would give her in, even though her heart hammered in her chest like a bird in a cage. But if he failed, her master was likely to be the last face she was ever going to see.

   Now! She thought.

With the grace of a thief, she twirled the blade in her hand so it pointed right to the man's gut. He was busy kissing her mouth now, but as he passed again to her neck, she knew it was time.

With all her might, she plunged the blade in to the hilt, and blood splashed across her chest and legs.

She watched as he drew back from her, horror painted on his face. And he gasped for air as blood filled his mouth, and trickled down his chin, and seeped in his beard.

"You... Vile creature... Bloody..." but he never got to finish it, for another amount of blood sputtered from his mouth as he collapsed down on to the ground.

Rey's face was blank as she stared at him, and drops of crimson blood dripped from the tip of her knife on the floor. She laced back hastily the small cloth that covered her chest.

Then, with a content smile, she crouched down next to him. He was sucking at the air, as if grasping the last threads of life.
Finally, her dream has become reality. Now she could be free, once and for all. Go somewhere far away and start over.

But her master turned his head toward her, slowly, as if begging for her mercy.

It's too late, old man! She wanted to tell him.

"Please..." She heard him whisper. His words came out in shallow breaths. "Put an end to it, please. Or are you so much of a coward... "

"OH... But I don't think so."

And he opened his mouth to scream in pain but she covered it.

"That was for trying to dishonor me."

"A thief has no honor!" he spat blood in her face, with what strength he'd got left as the life was pouring out of him, slowly.

   But Rey ignored him.

"And this is for all those years of torture." She said as she dug the blade again in his shoulder, his free hand stuffing a cloth in his mouth.

Then, she wiped her knife on his sleeve, sheathed it in her belt and stood up. With a last blank glance, she whispered at her old master. "I hope you die slowly."

His eyes burned her, but she was already gone. Before she left, she snatched a long dark hooded cloak from the pile at the door in the back of the tent, veiled herself in it, and set out from behind.

She threw a glance here and there, and ran to the horses. She didn't have one, but she knew which of them was the fastest so she made straight for it.

It was pitch dark, but her vision was adjusted to it. No fewer that thirty times did she have to fight during a night. And every time she had won.

She stepped closer to the black horse and patted its head.

"Shh." She whispered as it made to neigh. She placed both hands on its jaws and leaned in to place a kiss on its soft nose. "It's me, Rey."

Then she grasped the reins and swung in the saddle. The laughter still echoed off the trees, and she was grateful for it. This way, no one would hear the sound of the hooves hitting the ground.

She started into the night, first at a slow pace. As she was far enough, she glanced back one more time, to make sure no one had followed her.

Everything was as still as water. Only a swift wind rustled the leaves, and made a song so sweet, it almost lulled Rey to sleep. It had been a hard day for her, but she wouldn't allow herself to rest until she found safety.

She kicked her horse and broke into a gallop as she headed west. Her cloak snapped and flapped in the wind, and her hood had fallen off her head. But it didn't matter now. For the night was enough to cover her.
