Chapter 1
Third person pov
The entire bus shook, jerking violently as Elliot struggled to keep it steady. She wasn't too sure what was wrong, or what was causing the issues. All she knew is that she needed to land, and soon, too. Her time machine had broken before, but never like this, and especially not while she was in the middle of traveling from one time line to the next. Getting stuck in what she liked to call the "in-between" would be a death sentence. Nobody could survive out here, magic bus or not.
Running low on fuel and struggling to focus with so many things happening at once, Elliot found herself desperately searching for an open wormhole wide enough to force the bus through. She didn't care what time period or dimension they landed in, so long as they didn't die in the process.
As if things couldn't get worse, a red light began to blare, blinking in sync with the blaring alarm. Elliot let out a hiss, slamming on the gas and forcing the sputtering bus to speed up. The vehicle jerked forward, and Elliot banged her fist angrily down on a blinking, yellow button. The machine seemed to steady, although only slightly, and the alarms didn't stop. Elliot absolutely could not die. She had a passenger with her, and him dying would ruin the entire timeline in unimaginable ways. It would create ripples in the universe. This man triggered one of the largest events in history, and his early death would most certainly put a damper on things. Elliot didn't even want to think about the complete and utter chaos the world would inevitably spiral into.
The red light continued flashing on and off, the sirens blasting louder than ever. The bus gave a threatening shudder, eliciting a scream from the boy behind her. "Error. Error. Losing altitude." A automated, male voice emitted from the radio. The man had an English accent as though to show just how serious this was. Still, she stared at the radio in mild surprise. That had certainly never happened before.
"Well, that's new." She noted.
"Great! We're both going to die!"
Elliot glanced back at her panicked friend, sighing. "Shisui, we aren't going to die. Look, there's a wormhole just ahead!"S he tried to sound positive, but it was the same as trying to cheerfully explain the death of a puppy to a child. It was forced, awkward, and full of grim doubt. Shisui felt the color drain from his face. He was too hot to die!
"System error."
"Oh, great. That's all we need. We could be landing in the middle of a war for all you know!" He exclaimed, trying to ignore the British voice warning them of the life-threatening error.
"Better than death!" Elliot grabbed reached across the three gear shifts she usually used, grabbing onto different one and yanking it down three clicks. "Buckle up." Elliot said as the bus went still, and dead silent. It was only for a second, though. Before Shisui could react, they were blasting towards the dark hole.
"Hyperdrive, activated." A female voice said.
The English man spoke up at the same time. "System error. Losing altitude rapidly. Please prepare for impact."
Elliot and Shisui both screeched as they plummeted towards the ground. "Pull up, pull up!" Shisui had on arm draped over Elliot's seat, grasping her shoulder. The other was clutching to the top of the chair as he desperately tried to balance himself. And to keep himself from crashing through one of the many, many windows as the bus continued to jerk dangerously.
"I'm... trying!" She grunted, pulling the steering wheel as far back as it would go. They were still descending rapidly, but at least they wouldn't be slamming hood-first into the ground. However, they were gradually descending towards what looked like one of Konoha's larger sections of trees. Elliot prayed this was Shisui's timeline, but somehow she doubted it. At least they were in the Leaf at all.
"We're dead! So, so dead!" Shisui wailed.
"Don't doubt me, dumbass." Elliot spun the steering wheel left, and then right, dodging trees as best she could with practiced expertise as they flew through the woods at break-neck speed. Smoke billowed out behind them. Elliot wondered how many people had spotted her time machine.
They crashed through some bushes, the bus turning sideways and sliding. "Shit!" Elliot jumped up, slamming her weight into the opposite side of the bus before it could tip. Shisui did the same, sweat beading his brow as they slid right into a tree. A large dent appeared in the middle of the bus's right side, causing the entire vehicle to jolt. The sudden movement send both Elliot and Shisui slamming into the side of the bus, and then, the ground. The pair both groaned.
"Elliot, are you okay?" Shisui asked, blinking a few times.
"Yeah... I think so. You?" Elliot sat up, massaging her head carefully. That would definitely bruise.
"Winded, but flawless as ever." Shisui reported, giving an exhausted grin and a thumbs up. Elliot chuckled a little, somehow managing to stand up. The bus continued to beep. Elliot was honestly just glad it hadn't completely died on her.
"Let's get out of here." She wiped some sweat off her brow. It was hot. Maybe it had overheated, and that was the problem.
"Yeah, let's." Shisui grumbled, using the bus seats to hoist himself up. He stumbled ever so slightly, and Elliot moved to help him. He held up a hand to stop her, blinking the blurriness from his eyes. He let out a breath. He didn't have a concussion. At least, he didn't think he did. "I'm good, I'm good."
"Alright... we're still on your timeline, I think, but I'm not sure what period. Let's just hope Tobirama is alive..." Elliot sighed.
"Why him?" Shisui questioned.
"He's the only one with spare parts for this thing. He was taught to make them a long, long time ago by someone else. A time traveler who came before me, maybe, or my future self." Elliot told him as she forced open the doors. They let out a creak of protest.
"He was a blacksmith?" Shisui questioned.
"I guess you could say that. He molded the hot metal with boiling water." Elliot turned around. "Hey, can you pull the keys out?"
Shisui twisted his body around, grabbing the keys and yanking them out. He handed them over. "Thanks. Anyway, he was a great inventor. He designed the inside of the Hokage Monument." Elliot informed as they stepped out.
"There's an inside?" Shisui questioned, dumbfounded. They began to trek through the trees.
"Yes, Shisui. It's a giant bunker for emergencies." Elliot sighed, shaking her head at him in amusement. You didn't need to be a time traveler to know that the inside of the Hokage's Mountain was an evacuation location.
"Cool." He grinned a goofy grin.
"Yeah, yeah. Let's just hope he's still around. I'm not sure when we are..." Elliot trailed off.
"I hope I don't meet myself. That would be cool but... weird." Shisui mumbled, looking down at his hands as he thought about it. He found he didn't like the idea of possibly meeting his tiny, brat self, or his future children. It would definitely throw him off. He was totally one of a kind! Two Shisui's was too much for the world.
"Oh no." Elliot whispered, coming to a halt just beyond the tree line. Shisui stopped next to her.
"What is it?" He asked quietly, glancing around.
"Minato's head is on the mountain, which means Tobirama has already passed." She sighed. She peered at the town, looking for key features.
"I've never seen some of these buildings." Shisui pointed out, nodding to the left. Elliot stood on her toes, grimacing.
"Let me get on your back. I need a better view." Elliot demanded. He raised an eyebrow, but grinned anyway, dropping to the ground. Elliot didn't hesitate to use him as a step stool. He didn't waver, easily able to hold her up.
"You weigh absolutely nothing, you small fry." He joked as she stood on her toes again, squinting against the suns harsh rays. She shielded her eyes with her hand.
"That doesn't mean I can't break your back with a single jump." She responded. He went silent instantly.
Elliot's face went pale when she was a familiar group of four walking down the street. Kakashi Hatake and his first, and only, passing team of genin were walking down the street towards the river. Probably to pick up trash on a D-rank. Elliot let out a loud groan, climbing of Shisui and sinking to her knees.
"What? What is it?" Shisui asked. Elliot froze. Shisui wasn't supposed to know about... well, anything. It would ruin the timeline completely. But for the sake of getting him back to his proper time period...
She supposed she could wipe his memory later.
