Chapter 4 A Change of Plans [L]
A/N: In case it wasn't clear. The Prince James in this book is indeed Davids brother. ^ that guy.
Evynne groaned as the curtains in her room were opened and the sunlight was cast upon her face, waking her up. She threw her blankets over her face.
"Oh Evynne, what on earth are you doing in bed this late??" Rebecca fussed at her.
"Go away and let me sleep." Evynne mumbled and rolled over.
"Prince James is waiting for you in the dining hall! You've missed breakfast. You're father is less than pleased."
"Must be Tuesday." Evynne yawned.
"Out of bed you!" Rebecca scolded her and pulled the blanket off of her head. Evynne held it up to prevent herself from being exposed as she was completely naked under her covers.
"Oh alright!" Evynne whined and sat up holding the blanket over her chest. Rebecca walked to the wardrobe in Evynne's room and looked through it.
"Since you gave away your best dress to a bloody bar wench I have no idea what to dress you in." She sighed.
"I can dress myself Rebecca, please leave me be." Evynne said.
"You give me your word you won't just go back to sleep the second I walk out that door." Rebecca said and put her hands on her hips.
"I promise!" Evynne sighed exasperated already.
"I'll be right outside the door." Rebecca said.
"You sound just like Garrison." Evynne snorted as Rebecca walked out of the room. Evynne sighed and flopped backwards, her pillows still smelled like Killian and she longed for him to be here so she could go back to sleep, wrapped in his arms.
Evynne rolled out of bed and put her feet on the floor, and went to the floor mirror by her wardrobe. She smiled and bit her lip as she trailed her fingers over the little finger print bruises, and tiny scratches from Killian's hook however she liked the little possessive bite marks she had here and there, all over perhaps the best. She frowned, wondering how long it would be before she saw her love again.
Evynne opened her wardrobe, and picked another one of her red dresses. Red was Killian's favorite color on her so she always tried to wear it. She dressed herself and sat at her vanity looking at her tired eyes. Although her eyes were tired, her face still had leftover glow from her incredible night with Killian. She brushed through her long hair as Rebecca came back into the room to help her with it, she braided parts on the side and pulled them back pinning them. The rest of her natural wavy hair cascaded over her shoulders.
"Oh. dear.. What is this?" Rebecca gasped and looked at the tiny bruise on Evynnes neck.
"I ran into something at the tavern last night." Evynn lied and picked up her Tiara that Garrison had gotten back from the bar wench and placed it on her head.
Rebecca raised an eyebrow skeptically and Evynne just gave her a cheeky grin and stood up.
"Shall I go meet with my husband to be?" She asked.
"Oh of course, try not to run into anything else dear.." Rebecca replied narrowing her eyes, leaving Evynne wondering if Rebecca was not quite buying into her tales.
Evynne walked down the hallway and was met at the end by Garrison. She rolled her eyes and tried to storm past him in no mood for him today.
"You can be angry with me all you want Evynne. I warned you."
Evynne made a face "I warned you." She said in a low pitched mocking tone.
"Don't be such a child." Garrison said as he walked along beside her.
"Leave me alone Sir Garrison I am in no mood for you.. And your...you-ness today." Evynne spat.
"I'm afraid I can't leave you alone. After last night, I am to accompany you absolutely everywhere. It's your own fault. I want you to see something.. Before we go to the dining hall." he said and lead her down towards the dungeons.
Evynne's heart began to race. Was Killian caught on his way out this morning? She felt dread in the pit of her stomach as Garrison pulled her along into the damp and cold dungeons. She shivered and they stopped in front of a cell.
"Your actions have consequences that don't just include you. Take a look."
Evynne looked in the cell and cocked her head to the side looking at the woman who sat with her head down. She raised her head and Evynne gasped. It was Lyra the bar wench who had helped her yesterday.
"Lyra!"
Lyra glared and turned away from her obviously feeling betrayed.
Evynne growled and shoved Garrison.
"You let her go this instant!"
"I can't. She's been charged with impersonating you. Your father saw to that."
"I told her she wouldn't be in trouble! I asked her to do this!" Evynne nearly shrieked.
"That is what I am trying to tell you Evynne! You caused this with your selfishness! She is in there, because of you and she's been sentenced to death. You'll attend her execution tomorrow morning."
Evynne growled again and stormed away from Garrison. She hurried up the steps and into the main part of the castle storming towards the dining hall where she knew her father would be.
"Evynne!" Garrison shouted as he followed after her.
Evynne pushed the doors to the dining hall open and walked in.
"Ah! Evynne there you are." James said as she walked in.
"Not. Now." Evynne spat and walked past him and slammed her hands down on the table in front of her father.
"Let. Her. Go." She seethed.
"We will discuss this later Evynne." Her father said in a low warning voice.
"Now is good." Evynne challenged.
"Should I.. just step out?" James asked.
"Yes. You should." Evynne said.
"James, just give us a moment. you'll have to excuse Evynne, she hasn't quite been herself, she hasn't been feeling well." The king said and glared at his daughter as James left the room. "We will discuss this later, and if you hope to change that girls fate you will lower your voice, and collect yourself." He said.
"My apologies your Majesty I tried to stop her." Garrison apologized.
"Its quite alright." He said waving it off.
Evynne's knuckles went white on the table as she tried to reel in her temper.
"You will go out there, and you will apologize to the Prince for being so impolite, at once and then you will spend your day with him, as he has asked me for your time."
Evynne kept her eyes glued to her fathers. She was not one to back down. She had ways of getting what she wanted. Always.
"Let her go, or this marriage arrangement is done." She snapped.
"You wouldn't." Her father said.
"Well, I'm no longer allowed to leave the palace until I am married. So honestly what do I have to lose? Let Lyra go or I take off this ring and shove it down that princes throat." Evynne said and crossed her arms. "Think about what's best for the kingdom. Are you really going to let it all go over a Bar wench?" She asked.
The King turned to Garrison.
"Free the girl at once." He said and stood up and pointed his finger at Evynne as Garrison turned and left the room.
"Mark my words, you are on thin ice. I love you Evynne, you are my everything and you are all that I have left, and it breaks my heart that you have become this way. This is not what your mother wanted from you and she would be horrified and embarrassed by your actions. You are to be married, it is time to grow up, and get your head out of the clouds. Stop storming around the palace demanding things like a petulant child and take responsibility for your actions."
Evynne looked away. "Why must you bring mother into this?" She asked.
"Because its the only way I can ever get through to you."
"She would rather have me marry someone for love.." Evynne muttered. "I know she would.."
"You will learn to love James, as your mother learned to love me." King Alexander smiled. "Now go, and apologize to James, and spend the day with him."
"I'd rather fall from the tower window.." Evynne mumbled under her breath.
"Behave yourself." He warned her and pushed her towards the doors Evynne sighed heavily and bit back her pride as she opened the doors.
"My apologies, Prince." She said to James, who was waiting on the other side of the doors. She flashed him whatever smile she could manage. The King nudged his daughter. Evynne looked back at him, as if to ask what more he could possibly want. He nodded for her to keep on. She turned back to face James.
"My father tells me, you've asked for my time today, and I apologize for wasting yours. I'm sure whatever you have planned for the day is lovely and I am just beside myself with excitement." She tried her best to keep the sarcasm out of her tone, but a pinch on the back of her arm from her father suggested her acting might have needed work.
James, however appeared to be blinded to the truth of the whole thing, too full of himself to realize if Evynne didn't have to be here, she wouldn't be.
"Well then, Princess, we should be going while it's still early." James grinned.
"Going?" Evynne asked.
"James has asked to take you for a stroll by the sea. You'll be accompanied by Sir Garrison of course." The King said. "I don't know exactly how much trouble you'd get into on a beach, but you never stop surprising me." He sighed and shook his head. "Enjoy your time." He smiled and walked away leaving Evynne with James and Garrison.
"I don't think we need to be accompanied." James offered. "I'm sure you have better things to do Sir Garrison."
"Oh, at least one-hundred that I can think of. However, until you two are married, and she is your problem, she is under my charge." Garrison sighed. "Besides, I'd hate to have to try and spare your life because she's run off on you."
"I think I am quite capable of handling the Princess myself." James smirked and snaked his arm around Evynne's waist.
Evynne rolled her eyes.
"Listen to me carefully boy, you won't be handling anything if you don't remove your arm and put it back at your side." Garrison warned. "She's not yours just yet."
"Garrison, down boy." Evynne smirked and shrugged herself out of James' grasp.
"I am perfectly capable of handling myself, thank you." She said and stuck her nose up as she walked ahead of them.
"You'll have that to look forward to, for the rest of your life your Highness." Garrison grinned and followed Evynne.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evynne walked along in the sand, as James droned on and on beside her about all the places he'd been and the quests he'd accomplished. She wasn't really paying attention to him, she was busy watching the soft waves rolling by. She had personally never been out at sea, but Killian told her stories all the time and she had always wondered what it would be like. The smell of the salty sea air was making her miss him terribly. She turned to James.
"Have you ever met a pirate?" She asked and then regretted it immediately as James went off on another tale of a quest, where he and his men were almost done in by Pirates and Evynne wished at that moment that they would have been.
"Have you ever met a Pirate?" James asked her. Evynne froze for a minute, but then shook her head.
"Not yet."
"Not yet?" James asked.
"Well, I haven't been on many adventures. My father likes to keep me home. I'm rarely allowed to even go into town." Evynne sighed.
"Adventures aren't for Princesses, so its probably for the best. Have you any idea what a Pirate would do with someone like you?"
Evynne knew exactly what a Pirate would do with someone like her and it sent shivers down her spine, but not in a bad way. She narrowed her eyes at James.
"What do you mean adventures aren't for Princesses?" She asked. "As your wife, I'd like to accompany you on your adventures." She said and put her hands on her hips.
"Then who will look after our children?" James asked, and if Evynne could kill him with her eyes, she would have.
"Our children?" She asked in disbelief. "What if I don't want children?" It wasn't that she was opposed to the idea of children. She just didn't want his children.
James laughed as if she had told a joke.
"Of course you want children. Our children will be beautiful. They will want for nothing, as will you."
Evynne was trying desperately to keep her temper in check, the wedding wasn't supposed to be for months. She still had time to try and figure out a way out of this mess. She turned away from him again looking back out at the water. She could see Killian's ship was still at port but she didn't know how long he would be in town this time, or if she would see him again before he left and she desperately wanted to run and find him and beg him to take her away.
James put his hands on her shoulders.
"Don't you worry about those pirates. I've gotten word that my men have chased them out of town, they'll be leaving tonight."
Evynne's heart dropped. That was terrible news for her.
"Whatever would I do without you?" She asked, unable to keep the sarcasm from her tone. However as usual, he did not pick up on it.
"We should be heading back soon, We are having dinner with your father, and mine tonight to discuss the final arrangements, and then you'll need to rest because tomorrow will be a big day." James grinned.
"What happens tomorrow?" Evynne asked, clearly confused.
"Your father, and mine agreed that it is for the best that the wedding be moved up. So you will be returning to my kingdom with me tomorrow and when we get there, we will be married."
