Chapter 16 Hold On To Me, You're All I Have [L]
A/N: Just a quick kinda emotional filler chapter.
Evynne glanced around the room taking in all the damage they had done to it just hours ago as she dressed herself. She chuckled at Killian still fast asleep on the now tilting bed. She'd have to pay for a new room tomorrow, as well as pay for the damages to this one. She lightly walked around the room, being careful not to wake him. She tried her best to avoid any pieces of glass from the vase that was on the breakfast table. That had been their final conquest before passing out from exhaustion. Evynne honestly thought for once She'd still be happily asleep curled up next to her Captain, especially after all of that, but the weight of her discovery today was still heavy in the back of her mind, not for lack of trying to snuff it out for the night at least... And Gods..did they try. So now she sat, in what was left of the chair by the fireplace, with the still mostly full bottle of rum alone with her thoughts. She didn't want to wake Killian. He'd already done so much.
She glanced down at the ring on her finger, her mother's ring and all the heartache from childhood when she woke in the night to her father's sobbing came flooding back. There would be nothing in this world, even knowing what she knew now that would ever convince her that those sobs were from a man who knew exactly what happened to his queen. She may not have loved him...but he definitely loved her. She felt her eyes stinging with tears as she took the first of what would be many drinks from the bottle of rum that night. She felt so angry. All those years of misery because her mother willingly walked away from her to start a new life, with a new husband and a new child.
As much as she loved Killian, she felt guilty having left her father now. However in her case he truly thought she'd been kidnapped she still couldn't help but wonder if the cries he might have made still sounded the same, and without her there, who was telling him it would be okay? He may have grown colder towards Evynne, the more out of line she fell as she grew up but she still loved her father very much. It was only the choices he made regarding her life that she hated. She took another long pull from the bottle attempting to wash away this horrible feeling.
Somehow, somewhere along the lines that night Evynne ended up down stairs, barefoot, bottle in hand, swaying around to the music she was humming.
Leanna, unable to sleep herself, was working late at the Inn cleaning up. She admired those Pirates but they were messy.
She glanced up from the table she was wiping down as she heard a familiar tune. It was the melody of a song she used to sing to her daughter to get her to go to sleep on the nights when her mind went wild with possibilities. Evynne's favorite phrase as a child always seemed to be But what if?
And apparently that hadn't changed in adulthood, she watched Evynne sway and teeter behind the bar raising the bottle to her lips. Of all the lives she'd hoped Alexander would have let their daughter explore, she'd hoped The Pirates life..might have been a little further down the list. Though if she was to end up with any pirate, she was quite glad it was Killian and not the others she'd seen. She cautiously walked to the bar, not wanting to startle Evynne.
"Evynne." She said quietly. Evynne jumped, startled anyways and dropped the bottle. It shattered on the floor.
"Nooo." She slurred and bent down.
"It's alright, you were quite done with that I think." Leanna sighed and bent down moving her daughter's hands away from the broken glass while she picked it up with the towel in her hands.
"Was not." Evynne grumbled and staggered to her feet and looked at all the bottles behind the bar.
"Lets not." Leanna sighed and moved her daughter to sit at a table to avoid falling over.
"Don't touch me!" Evynne said and pushed her mother away.
"It does no good for me to try and speak to you this way Evynne so I'm not going to try. Just sit here I'm going to go get you something to eat."
"I don't want anything from you!" Evynne spat. "You're a horrible mother."
"I know." Leanna nodded. "I didn't take care of you then, just let me take care of you now."
"Just go away." Evynne mumbled "I can take care of myself." She slurred.
"Clearly." Leanna sighed. "Just stay here. I'll be right back." Leanna said and went to the kitchen.
When Leanna came back from the kitchen Evynne was gone and the door to the Inn was wide open.
"Oh..dear." She sighed and stepped outside to find Evynne staggering around barefoot in the snow.
When Killian woke up, he knew something was not right. He didn't even have to look to know Evynne was not beside him. He sat up, and glanced around the room. Maybe she'd woken up to use the bathroom. He stood up, and walked across the room there was no sign of her. He had a bad feeling in his gut so he glanced at the floor beside the forgotten where they had left the rum and it was gone.
"Bloody hell.." He sighed and quickly dressed himself and hurried out of the room.
Downstairs the Inn was empty as well. There was a table, with a bowl of something with steam still coming out of it, which he found odd. He was hit with a blast of freezing cold wind and looked up to see the door to the Inn wide open.
"Oh..no." He sighed and shivered as he walked outside.
Thankfully Evynne was right outside the Inn and hadn't wandered too far and she wasn't alone. Although he was sure at the moment she'd rather be alone than be in the company of her mother who was desperately pleading with her daughter to come back inside before she caught death. Killian looked down at Evynne's feet realizing she had completely forgotten her boots. He shook his head and walked over to where the two of them were.
"A little help Captain?" Leanna sighed. Evynne looked up and grinned at Killian.
"Hello darling!" She slurred. "It snowed. Can you believe it?"
"Aye. given that it's freezing and all." Killian said. "You've forgotten your boots Evynne. Lets go back inside and get them. Of course he had no intentions of coming back out into this wet and cold abomination.
"I don't need em." Evynne said and scooped up a bunch of snow and threw it into the air and then fell over backwards into the snow bank.
"Bloody hell Ev you're loaded to the gunnels." Killian sighed and walked over and plucked her from the snow with ease figuring getting her inside willingly was out of the question.
"I'd wager she drank almost half the bottle on her own before dropping it on the floor." Leanna sighed. "Good thing you woke up."
"Aye. She's freezing. She'll be lucky if she doesn't catch something." Killian said.
"I've got spare blankets warming by the fire. Sometimes we get people who wander in late from the snow." Leanna said and followed him inside and closed the door.
"I warmed her up some food might do some good to get something in her stomach." Leanna nodded to the table before walking to the fireplace to retrieve a blanket.
"I don't wager anything that makes it to her stomach will stay there long. She's been on my ship for months and I've never seen her this drunk." Killian said as Leanna draped the warm blanket over Evynne in his arms. Evynne was actually the one who usually kept them all in line when the crew would have a bit too much to drink.
"You've really done a number on her you know." He said harshly.
"I know." Leanna nodded sadly. "And I don't know how many times I'm going to have to apologize to her before its enough."
"It may never be enough. She thought you were dead Leanna..and she probably feels it would be easier if you were." Killian said and turned to go back up the stairs to their broken room.
He set Evynne down once in the room and steadied her on her feet.
"You just can't seem to keep out of trouble can you?" He smirked and put the warm blanket on the bed. "I'm beginning to think I need to tie you to the bed every night to make sure you stay put."
Evynnes eyebrows danced up in amusement.
"That sounds like fun. Let's do that now!" She said. Killian shook his head and smiled.
"Another night perhaps. You need to get out of those cold wet clothes love." Evynne smiled and leaned against him.
"I love you even when you're blurry." She said.
"I love you too." Killian chuckled.
"Promise?" Evynne asked.
"Of course my love." Killian said and ran his hands through her hair. "You're freezing love. Come on." Killian said and led her to the fireplace. "Maybe next time you decide to have a party invite me?" He chuckled and helped her out of her clothes that were cold and wet from falling in the snow. He quickly walked across the floor to the bed where he left the warm blanket and wrapped it around her.
"There you go." He smiled and then frowned at the look of discomfort on her face. Her hands shot up to her mouth and Killian barely grabbed the empty ice bucket on the floor in time. Evynne took the bucket and expelled all the rum she'd drank into it. Killian pulled her hair back and pat her back.
"Oh..God." Evynne groaned.
"Aye." Killian chuckled. "Does not taste as good coming back up does it?"
Evynne wiped her lip and looked over her shoulder at him.
"Still love me?"
"Darling, if the sight of you vomiting was going to cause me to revoke my love for you, we'd have been over and done the first couple weeks that you were on the ship before you got over your seasickness. You feel better?" Killian asked.
Evynne nodded.
"Good. you sit by the fire, I'll take care of this and get you some water." He said. "Don't move." He added.
Evynne nodded again and sat down in front of the fireplace wrapping her shivering form in the warm blanket.
Killian left the room for just a minute to discard of the bucket and get Evynne something to drink. When he returned, he half expected her to be up to no good, but surprisingly she was in the exact spot he left her. He slowly approached her, noticing her back shaking, and soft whimpering coming from her.
"Ev?" he asked and sat down next to her. She hid her face from him.
"Come now, love its okay. You're fine. I'd be willing to wager you could drink half my crew under the table now." He chuckled.
"I'm no better than her." Evynne choked out. "I'm a horrible daughter. I just.. I left him like she did."
"Evynne you had no choice love. It was either leave, or be forced to marry someone you couldn't stand." Killian said. "Don't put this weight on your shoulders."
"I'm so bloody angry with her!" Evynne sobbed finally turning to him. Her eyes were red from tears and her cheeks stained as they spilled out of her eyes. "But what right do I have to be angry? I did the same thing!"
"Evynne you have every right to be angry. What she did, and what you did, are two different things." Killian said and rested his hand on her cheek thumbing away her tears.
"We both left for love Killian." Evynne sniffled.
"She left behind a small child. If she never loved your father she should have left long before you were involved. I know you love. If there was a child involved you would not have left that child for me, or for the world. Nor would I have ever asked you to. Thats the difference between you and your mother and that difference is a pretty big one if you ask me. Don't compare yourself to her."
"All those years.. I was so angry.. For the wrong reasons and Now I don't know what to feel and its all just coming out at once and I don't know what to do!" Evynne sobbed and collapsed into Killians chest.
Killian held her closely, as close as he possibly could without smothering her. He pressed his lips to the top of her head and ran his hand up and down her back.
"Just let it out love." He said softly into her hair.
Evynne cried..letting out every pent up feeling she'd held onto since seeing her mother for the first time since she was a child. She cried until she exhausted herself and fell asleep in Killian's arms.
Killian maneuvered his arms around Evynne to lift her as he stood up. He carried her over to the tilting bed and softly chuckled remembering earlier in the night when they broke it. He laid her down and stripped down a little to be more comfortable himself before climbing in bed next to her.
She blinked her eyes open a little and looked at him.
"Go back to sleep." Killian whispered.
Evynne curled herself into his chest until there was absolutely no room between the two of them.
"Thank you for always taking care of me." She mumbled.
"Always my love." Killian smiled down at her as she slipped back into much needed sleep.
