12. A new beginning
We arrived at the town near the sea and we prepared the ship so that we could leave things alright for spending the night somewhere else. It felt so strange to step on the ground after so much time at sea. I became used to the rocking of the ship on the waves. Ground was still. It would take one or two days before I became used to it.
The captain invited me and Derek for dinner at his family's house. I was impressed. He was really wealthy. Why did he have to be a pirate? It didn't look like he needed to. But perhaps his riches came from pirating.
I went to the guests' room and changed clothes for dinner. Derek managed to hide me until I got there because it wouldn't have been nice for the captain's family to see us like pirates. When I finished, I went to the dinning room. Derek was already there, dressed like a nobleman and the captain also changed clothes. They took a look at me and couldn't stop staring. I felt a little embarassed.
- You look lovely, mademoiselle- said the captain coming my way to kiss my hand. Derek just stood there, watching like an owl. He was speechless.
- Thank you, sir- I bowed.
His parents and his sister came into the room and he introduced me to them.
- And who might this astonishing young lady be, Edward?- the mother asked.
- She is Jaselly Amelia Willows of Dawnrays, the girl I've been telling you about in my letters.
- It's her?- his sister Lilliana asked- But she's so young.
I was confused. I did not understand why they knew about me. I decided to ask later. Perhaps they knew who my fioncè was. Or perhaps it was someone from the family... But that couldn't be... Although it would have made sense because then I would understand why it was the captain the one who had to make sure I arrived even if he was a pirate and there were so many other ships that could have brought me. But then, he would have attacked any other ship anyway... My father did well asking pirates to take me, because there was less chance of someone attacking pirates.
I started to make a mess in my head out of it and still couldn't find an answer I would agree with.
While dinning, the father decided to ask me a strange question.
- How do you feel about getting married already?
- I had little time to think about it although I knew this would happen since I was little. It is so strange to be engaged since birth and not even know the person to marry. I wish I could have chosen him.
- You will get used to it, you're still young. And you are lucky your fioncè isn't too old either.
- You know him?- I asked.
The parents and Lilliana looked at each other. The captain's sister was about one year or two younger than me.
- You didn't tell her?- the mother asked Derek and the captain.
- Well... I was waiting for the right moment- the captain said.
- I did not have the courage to- Derek said.
- Oh, my sons, you have not been fair to her- the mother said.
Whaaaat????? They were brothers????
- Sorry, mother, but I... I just couldn' t tell her, I'm sorry- Derek said.
- Please, tell me, just... strike already.
- Tomorrow there will be a ball here, then you will officialy meet your fioncè- the captain said- Have a little patience until then.
And that was the last word about that subject that night. The next day I would finally meet him. I wondered why they took it so seriously, as if there was something I should have known. I went to sleep hoping that I would finally meet him. I also hoped I would dance with Derek at the ball, at least once.
