I sat on the railing on the bow of the ship, looking out to sea. The sun had sunk down low on the horizon and now we were just waiting for Obsidian's order before Hobbs and I would venture out into the curious ocean and explore the white mass that stretched endlessly on either side of the sea surrounding us.
I squinted and tried to figure out how long it would take us to get there, the whiteness was quite some distance away, we had stopped well clear of it so there would be room to maneuver if we found that we could not pass through it.
I looked up at the pink and purple sky, noticing that the moon had already made an appearance, the bloated crystal white orb suspended high in the sky. A small light winked to the left as the first star appeared and instantly I found myself shutting my eyes.
Star light, star bright,
First star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Let my wish come true tonight, I thought, singing the verse softly in my mind.
I wish that-
"Circe?"
My head shot up, my eyes flying open as I looked around before smiling gently at the approaching Cobalt.
"Hello." I said as he drew up beside me, leaning his elbows on the railing I was sitting on. He as so tall that his head was still level with mine which meant that I was able to hold his grey eyed gaze perfectly as he studied me.
"Hello yourself." He murmured before gesturing to the ocean. "Beautiful night for a swim." He remarked, grinning slightly.
I smiled back, pointing out the moon. "I was worried that we weren't going to have enough light to be able to see where we were going but it seems that that won't be a problem now."
He nodded and we lapsed into silence as we both watched the last rays of sun sink below the horizon, the golden light shooting up into the sky a final time before disappearing completely and turning the sky into a dusky pink that faded to lavender. I found myself fiddling with the hem of my billowing white shirt that was actually one of Cobalts ones. I had grown used to wearing mens clothes and was starting to see why Lacy preferred them. It was a great relief not to feel so restricted all of the time and to actually be able to join in with activities instead of sitting to the side, fluttering a fan, was wonderful.
Cobalt looked over his shoulder towards the ships wheel and I followed his gaze to see Obsidian standing staunch beside the railing on the top deck of the ship.
"All hands below deck." He ordered. "Do not come above until I give the order."
No-one protested against his order and I was surprised to note that everyone was quite cheerful as they headed below, the happy banter fading as the door shut behind the last person.
Cobalt must have noticed as well because he smiled and leaned back against the railing. "I have a feeling that their good moods are due to our current position, Circe."
I looked at him in confusion. "What do you mean?"
He grinned, waving a hand to indicate the surrounding air. "Have you not noticed?" He questioned, leaning forward to capture the side of my face in his hand, his eyes twinkling with excitement. "The air is different here Circe, we have ventured beyond human life," He said, stressing the word human. "I would rather think that such an atmosphere would have a lasting effect on a person. We are entering the land of dreams. The lands of the unbelievable." He whispered, his cool breath brushing against my face as he stroked my cheekbone with his thumb. "Anything is possible here."
I looked up at him with wide eyes. "Do you know where we are going?" I said softly, feeling the need to keep my voice hushed.
He shook his head. "I have no more of an idea than you do Gorgeous. But where-ever we are going, it is somewhere good. I can feel it in my bones." The corner of his mouth twitched slightly upward into a handsome smirk. "No pun intended."
I laughed and was about to reply when Hobbs spoke up and we both turned at the same time to see his walking over to us, amusement clear on his face.
"Are you two ready?"
I nodded, smiling when Colby offered me his hand and helped me down from my seat on the railing. I cheekily curtsied and he laughed, grabbing my hand and kissing it gently, much like the way he had when we had first been introduced.
I felt myself blush a little and to hide it, I turned, scanning my eyes to see who had stayed above deck.
Obsidian still stood on the poop deck, his hands on the starboard railing as he looked out to sea. Samson leaned casually against the ships wheel and winked at me when I caught his eye, while Lacy and Leonardo were talking quietly in a corner, their heads close together.
As if she could feel my gaze, Lacy's head turned and her vibrant green eyes locked onto mine. She grinned and I returned it, tilting my head slightly in Leonardo's direction, confusion evident on my face. Did he know?
Lacy nodded and then mouthed, 'I'll tell you later.'
I inclined my head to acknowledge her choice and at Hobbsons call, left Cobalts side and made my way over to starboard deck, where Hobbs stood, holding a few blankets.
"Jest ta cover ya up." He explained, gesturing towards the woolen blankets. "I know I explained aboot the whole nudity thing but it might be a bit awkward wiv everyone else 'ere."
I nodded my head and took one from him. That had been one of the first things I had had to get over, the fact that when I was changed, my whole upper body was exposed. Hobbs had explained that I would understand alot more when we finally got to my Mothers Kingdom, and simply told me that because everyone was either born this way or changed this way eventually, the nudity wasn't a big problem in the magical world and for the woman of the Water Kingdom, it was as normal as it would be for me to put a corset on in the morning.
His neck had gotten a bit red as he explained all of this to me and it had helped to ease some of the tension as I realized it was probably difficult for him to explain such a womanly thing, an especially when it had been how he was brought up.
He told me that it was the reason that Siren woman hardly ever cut their hair short, as long hair proved cover for those who were more modest. I had learnt very quickly how to arrange my hair and move in a way that meant I could be as discreet as possible, but I had accepted that it was just another thing I was going to have to get used to. I had found that I was able to get past my uncomfortableness if I let my Siren blood take slightly more control over my confidence and soon the feeling of being exposed had melted away and I was alot more comfortable.
Hobbs had explained that in the Water Kingdom, it was considered rude for males to look anywhere but a females eyes anyway, and that there was a strict etiquette that I would have to learn before I entered the Kingdom.
"Are ya ready?" Hobbs asked again, more serious this time and I wiped my slightly sweaty palms on my pants. Sensing my nervousness he took my hands in his calloused ones and squeezed.
"Jest remember our practices Princess," He said calmly. "You'll be fine, I know ya can do it."
I felt my confidence increase with his words although my heart was still pounding so hard it felt as though it was about to beat right out of my chest. I thought back to the lessons Hobbs had been giving me on learning how to balance out my Siren blood with my human blood, running over them quickly in my mind. It was all about self control, about visualizing what you needed to do and sticking to it.
Most of our lessons had actually been in the water, or under it, as I had overcome my fear of swimming with Hobbs's help. He hadn't been surprised when I had told him I couldn't swim and had had the brilliant idea of using a flat piece of wooden board as a support, as I learnt how to move my limbs in a harmonic pattern that helped me to cut through the water with ease. Gradually I had gained enough confidence to let go altogether and when Hobbs had taught me how to let certain traits of my Siren push through, swimming had come easily and naturally.
I could still hear her though, every-time I dived into the cool relief of the ocean. She called to me from deep within myself, slithering her way into my mind with her haunting cries, trying to push herself outwards until see could see through my eyes. It scared me to admit it, but deep down I knew she wanted Obsidian, she wanted his hands on us like they had been on the day she had almost killed him, she wanted his lips against ours and our fingers in our hair. I was partially glad that he had been ignoring me all week as I was starting to have trouble sorting out my feelings and emotions from hers.
Hobbs had told me it was normal for half-breeds, that I would eventually get used to feeling like another person was living in my own body, it took a long time before half-breeds were able to share their body in harmony but it could be done. My Mother, he had said, was a good example of this. I had tried to point out the fact that I wasn't just a normal half breed but by then he had already moved on to another subject.
"Do you want me to go first?" Hobbs asked, making me jolt out of the past and back into reality.
I nodded. "Yes please."
He beamed at me before diving overboard, fully clothed, with a splash. The others on the deck started forwards in surprise but I stayed where I was, used to the routine by now. A minute later Hobbs's clothes flew back over the railing of the ship and landed in a soggy pile at my feet. I bent down and shifted the blankets away from the puddle that was forming so they wouldn't get wet, keeping one in my hands as I straightened. Hobbs did things his way, while I did mine in another, preferring not to get my clothes soaked every time we went for a swim, although, with the amount of sun we had been having, they wouldn't take too long to dry out anymore.
I looked over my shoulder at Lacy, beckoning her forward as Hobbs let out a cry from below. "'urry up little Madam! Stop dilly dallying aroond!"
I laughed and got Lacy to hold the blanket around me as I removed my clothes, letting them fall to the deck. Although this was the way I had been doing things all week, I suddenly found myself wishing that I had taken Hobbs plan of action for once, as I could feel the heated gazes burning into my back. I tugged the blanket out of Lacy's hands and wrapped it around myself, trying very hard not to look anywhere but her as I smiled, and she grinned back knowingly, amusement flashing in her eyes.
"Circe!" Hobbs called again and I backed away towards the rail, climbing up onto it and swinging my legs over onto the outside of the rail, still refusing to look behind me and instead focusing my eyes on Hobbs smiling face as his head bobbed just above the surface of the water.
"Nervous?"
I laughed a little shakily. "A little, I haven't ... this is the first time, with all these people ..."
"You will do fine," He said and his voice had such a Fatherly protective tone to it, that I felt all of my fears wash away as I kept my eyes on his warm blue ones.
"Just like we've practiced." He encouraged. "Close yer eyes if ya think it will help."
My eyes fluttered shut and my brow furrowed as I concentrated, the image of what I desired to look like swirling around in my head.
Starting from my hips, I constructed my tail in my mind, imagining that it was unrolling down from my waist and fastening my thighs together, then my knees, shins, ankles and toes. I imagined my tail fins growing and stretching down and the hard armor of scales coating the rest of my exposed skin. Gradually I felt what I was imagining happen in real life, faster than the first time and without the uncomfortable itching feeling.
I opened my eyes to see Hobbs grinning at me and I beamed back.
"Well that must be a new record Princess, well done!"
My smile stretched bigger as I felt the satisfaction of finally doing something right that day take over me. Before I could lose this burst of confidence I adjusted my hair and shrugged off the blanket, presenting my bare back to the people behind me. Hobbs had turned his face politely to the side and I flipped my glistening bottom half off the rail in one smooth movement, twisting my body around so I dove head first into the water.
The silky embrace of the ocean closed around me and I shot down through the crystal clear blue, my eyes wide open in wonder The water was amazingly warm and perfectly clear, I could see for miles along the glistening silver sea bed, even though it was nighttime, the moons silver rays seeming to provide just as much light as the sun.
I took a deep breath of water, letting it filter through the small gills that were set just under my ear, behind my jaw bone. It had taken me a little longer to get used to breathing underwater and at first I had panicked when Hobbs had explained what I had to do, I was terrified I was going to drown. In the end Hobbs had just held me underwater until I had been forced to take a breath and as soon as I did I realized that breathing like this came naturally and I had had nothing to fear.
That didn't mean that I hadn't been angry at Hobbs for doing that to me though, I was beyond furious and ignored him for a whole day. Unfortunately he had been simply amused my attempts to punish him and in the end I had just given up.
I breathed in again, this time noticing with surprise that the water, instead of being salty, was wonderfully sweet and every mouthful I took made me feel all the more energized. I flicked my tail so I moved forward, skimming over the ocean floor and letting a hand drag through the fine grained sand before tilting upwards and letting a wave of motion move through my body, propelling me up and allowing my head to break the surface. Instantly my gills closed, temporarily sealing away back into my skin as I took a breath of straight oxygen.
"The water is warm," I gasped, turning to Hobbs. "and sweet, like drinking water." I touched a hand to my lips, feeling a slight buzz spread through my limbs. "But it's like, it's like ..."
"Liquid energy." Hobbs finished, looking serious. "We aren't in land inhabited by Humans anymore Circe an' yer goin' ta be seein' curious things tonight. I need ya ta stay close ta me and try not ta be losin' yer head."
I nodded solemnly, my eyes growing wide with the excitement that was suddenly spreading through me like blood in my veins.
"Obsidian!" Hobbs called and almost instantly Obsidian was at the rail, looking down at us silently. I noticed how the night changed his face into something more sinister and with his hat pulled half over his face, I was suddenly looking at the boy that had kissed me on my balcony two years ago. Those high sharp cheekbones, that strong, straight nose and his full lipped pout were all part of Obsidians basic artillery, the only thing hidden was his eyes, those eyes that could see straight to your soul with one glance.
He titled his head slightly and I saw a gleam of silver flash from beneath his hat as the moonlight caught his silver eye, the gold eye staying hidden in the darkness like the sleeping sun.
Hobbs spoke again, gesturing towards our destination. "It's not too far away, we should be under half an hour.
Obsidian nodded once and was suddenly joined by his twin. For a moment I took the time to compare them, noticing how although Cobalts jaw was as just as strong, and his nose just as straight as Obsidian's, his face was softer, his cheekbones not so harsh, the line of his mouth still full and pouting, but more relaxed than his brother.
And then there was his shaggy dark brown curls that were far too long and in dire need of a cut, but I found that instead of taking away appeal, appeal was added and when he widened his eyes he looked like a scruffy, cheeky little boy in need of a hug.
Cobalt grinned and waved at me. "Hi Circe!"
I grinned and waved back, laughing at his enthusiasm. Lacy and Leonardo joined him and Obsidian at the railing and I laughed loudly as Lacy nearly leapt overboard with excitement, the only thing holding her back was Leonardo's strong arm around her waist.
"Circe! I want to come in!" Lacy squeaked, gripping the edge of the rail.
I bobbed nervously up and down, keeping myself afloat by gently waving my tail back and forth through the water. The movement was automatic now, I didn't need to think about it.
"Maybe later Lace," I called, looking over at Hobbs. He nodded. "I think we have to go now, I'll see you soon!" I grinned and her face fell slightly before brightening at my last words.
"Okay!" She waved enthusiastically and I laughed before slipping gracefully below the surface after Hobbs and following behind his glimmering blue tail that was as light as the color of his eyes.
According to Hobbs, the color of our scales usually matched either our hair color or our eye color, which explained why, while his scales were a light blue, mine were as golden as the hair that fell down to my waist. Our tails were as long as our legs, and then half as long again, plus the slippery fins that separated out at the bottom and acted like a rudder to help us steer through the water. These fins were a lighter gold than the rest of my scales, with veins of dark gold shooting through them. The same went for the delicate fins that were attached at my hips that served no purpose other than to decorate. Hobbs didn't have them, he said it was a female trait.
I stretched out my hands in front of me and spun around in the water, loving the feeling of freedom that I got every time I swam. There were no restrictions down here, I could swim as deep as I wanted, stay underwater for as long as I wanted and no-one would ever tell me otherwise. There is something about knowing things like that that give a person a great feeling of release.
I swam a little faster, teasingly grabbing onto the tip of Hobbs's tail and letting him pull me along for a bit.
My eyes widened as we neared what seemed to be a coral reef, the tall pink mass rising out of the sand like winding towers and as we drew closer I realized just how big it was. Hobbs and I actually had to swim upwards to get over it and Hobbs paused at the top, carefully measuring the distance between the top of the coral and the surface of the water. I knew we had met our first obstacle if we were to proceed forward by ship.
While he concentrated, I couldn't help but swim in and around the coral, marveling at its beauty. The moonlight streamed straight through the water as though it wasn't even there and the pink coral turned into more of a pastel pink under the sliver rays. Every now and then, small fish darted out from their little hidey holes, but they weren't like any of the fish I had seen back at home. These ones were painted impossibly bright colors and almost seemed to glow like little lanterns.
A big one swum past me at that moment and I noticed that it was the same breed as the regular ones sold in our market back home. However, while the ones at home were a dull grey in color, this one had a bright yellow head with a red body and purple fins. Its fins were dotted with tiny yellow dots and delicate purple swirls surrounded its eyes in some kind of intricate pattern. We stared at each other for a moment as it passed, its gills opening and closing as it gaped comically at me and then Hobbs voice shouted out and the fish started, darting away back into the coral before I could move.
Hobbs gestured towards him again and reluctant to stop exploring I swam up to his side.
"It's rather beautiful ain't it?" He said smiling.
"Yes," I agreed. "Why is everything such bright colors?"
"It be all o' that energy I was tellin' yah about before, the fish live in the water so it affects them in different ways."
I nodded my head, that made sense. "Do you think the ship will get over the top?"
He frowned. "We will have ta go down when she reaches it ta make sure, but I think it should be okay, I'll git Obsidian to take her through on the oars."
"How far till we get to our destination?"
In answer to my question, Hobbs swam upward and I followed behind him until our head broke the surface of the strange warm waters. I looked behind me, surprised by how far away the ship was, it hadn't felt as though we had been swimming for that long.
"Look"
I turned to see where Hobbs was pointing and drew in a breath to see that we were only a few hundred meters from the mysterious white mass and now I could smell a sweet, heavy fragrance, that hung in the air as though someone had sprayed too much perfume. It was a heady smell, slightly intoxicating, and I found myself drifting forwards through the water so I could get closer.
Hobbs laid a hand on my shoulder, holding me firmly in place. Confused, I looked behind him and he shook his head ever so slightly.
"Stay behind me."
As much as I wanted to swim forward as fast as possible, I forced myself to remember what he had told me earlier about not losing my head and reluctantly fell into place behind him.
Slowly we moved forward, swimming just under the surface and every once in a while popping our heads above the water to see how close we were. When we grew close enough to touch the whiteness, I swam forward, forgetting what Hobbs had said and reached out in amazement. The white substance was really thousands upon thousands of soft pink and white lilies. They were massive, each one the size of a dinner plate, and they sat delicately on broad flat green leaves that floated just below the surface. The middle of the lily was colored an intimate pink and right in the center was a cluster of tiny little glowing threads that swayed back and forth as though they were alive.
Unable to resist I reached out to touch one of the glowing strands and as my finger made contact there was a tiny shock of energy before the strand curled gently around my finger.
I gasped as my finger suddenly started to glow and an amazing feeling filled my body, from head to tail. My head fell back as the feeling pulsed through me and I closed my eyes as my body hummed with energy, similar to the energy the water had given, but doubled, no tripled in content.
It wasn't till Hobbs pulled me back, releasing my connection to the strands, that I realized he was yelling at me.
"Circe! Fer God sakes Girl, let go!"
I turned to him and couldn't help but grin at the buzz that was shooting through my veins. "What's wrong?"
Hobbs raised an eyebrow. "What wrong? Yer bloody glowing like a lantern, that's what's wrong!"
I frowned, looking down at the mirror like surface of the water and gasped. My long blonde hair was glowing a brilliant white, it fell down the length of my neck and pooled in the water around my shoulders, in comparison my normally milky skin was dark, but my eyes, oh my eyes. For a moment it was like someone had replaced them with the moon from the sky they were that luminous. Even the whites of my eyes were glowing slightly and when a bright light shone from around my neck, I tore my gaze away from my reflection to look at the pendant that sat, nestled on my chest. It too was glowing and when I reached out a hand to touch it, it gave me a small shock like the lily had and instantly I felt the energizing feeling run through me again.
"Hobbs," I said, rather nervously. "What is happening to me?"
He shook his head, his eyes wide with amazement as he reached out and gently laid a hand on my shoulder. Instantly he recoiled as though he had been burnt, swearing loudly.
"Son of a-
I started towards him, reaching out a hand. "Are you okay?" I asked, panicking.
He retreated rather quickly. "Oh no Princess, once was quite enough. It seems that you've been over energized."
I frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Ya know 'ow I was tellin' ya abou' the energy in the water and 'ow it affected the sea life afta a long time?" I nodded and he continued. "Well I ain't completely sure, but it seems that those there lilies, are energy makers, I don't know 'ow yer able to touch them at all, they should've burnt ya to a crisp."
"Would it have something to do with this?" I said, holding up the still glowing pendant hanging around my neck.
Hobbs rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "Perhaps. It'll be interesting ta see 'ow long it lasts for."
"But why is my hair and my eyes glowing?"
"Well because ya 'ave a whole lotta energy in ya Missy. You saw those there fishes, they are the way they are because they 'ave stored up the energy from the water over time. They 'ave more than they need so the excess goes into the bright colors. The same goes fer you, you've just found a more efficient way of gettin' it." He chuckled. "Trust you ta find a way of skippin' corners."
I poked my tongue out at him and folded my arms. Leaning back in the water, I flicked my tail up so the tip poked above the surface. "Do you think if I do it again, my tail will glow?" I pondered.
Hobbs snorted. "I think if ya did it enough yer whole body would glow an' then none of us would be able ta git enough sleep from the amount of light ya would be producin'"
I scowled at him. "So does that mean I can't try?"
"Aye, that be exactly what I mean Princess, can't 'ave ya gettin' 'urt now. I don't know what kinda things that much energy would do to ya body."
My scowl deepened and I felt my lips slip into a pout. "That's not fair."
"Didn't any one ever tell ya? Life ain't fair."
I rolled my eyes and laughed. "Alright then Mister Philosopher, are we going to head back now? Is there anything else we need to explore?"
My tone was teasing but Hobbs's expression turned serious as he looked around the still night, his brow furrowed. "I think the ship will be able ta move through the lilies wivoot any trouble, it's jest the coral reef we are goin' ta havta watch out for. Can't have it scraping a bloody great 'ole in the hull now can we? Then we would never be gettin' ta where we want ta be goin'"
"And your still not going to tell me where we are going?"
He shook his head and smiled. "Nope Lass, we be gettin' there in a few days, you can see fer yerself then."
I raised an eyebrow. "How can you know when we will be arriving if you don't know where we are going?"
Hobbs simply tapped the side of his nose in reply, before sinking back below the waters surface.
Grumbling under my breath, I took one last look around, suddenly feeling strangely sad that we were leaving this beautiful place.
We will be back soon, I reminded myself as I took a lock of my glowing hair in between my fingers and twisted it round. I sighed and glanced at my reflection in the water once more before diving down under in pursuit of my secretive mentor.
* * * *
The creature studied the girl, sinking its giant white head slightly lower in the water so it blended in with the surrounding flowers.
It could not be spotted.
It's second see-through eyelids slid shut over its great white eyes for a split second before opening again. These eyes had taken in the sight of the girl, foolishly taking in more energy than she had needed and the creature had come to the conclusion that the girl was young and not properly trained.
A slitted tongue flicked out from between sharp pointed teeth and scaly lips, and its wide nostrils flared as it took in the sight of the great ship anchored a way away from the girl.
The nostrils flared again as it took in a deep breath and its head jerked up slightly in surprise. There were humans on board? A low growl reverberated through it's deep chest. Humans were not permitted, they would have to be stopped at the entrance, but if the girl-with-hair-like-sun was who the creature suspected she was, then no harm would befall her.
It would see to that.
It watched her take her hair inbetween her fingers and twirl the glowing strands around slowly. It's eyes slitted and it's great tail flicked slightly to side as it noticed again the glowing white-blue pendant that was visible nestled comfortably just below the girls collar bone.
Definitely her.
She sank below the surface of the water and the creature mirrored her movements, watching as she swam gracefully off after her Guardian, her white glowing hair streaming out behind her. It watched her for a long time, studying her movements, the way she twisted through the water and every now and then, bumped playfully against her mentors side, but eventually the distance became too great and she faded from sight.
Reluctantly the creature turned away, slowly striking back up to the surface for air. It's snout broke through the water and it inhaled before diving back down and swimming in the opposite direction to the girl. Its movements were restricted by the water because of its size, but it still swum gracefully and swimming was the safest way to travel at the moment without being seen. As soon as it was far enough away from the ship it would hasten to relay the information to the One-who-is-Respected, well aware of the burden that this information placed upon it's shoulders.
The Queen of the Kingdom-below-the-water had told the truth.
She was coming.
