Suspicion From Everyone

Only a day has gone by and I'm already loving my new schedule! There's nothing better than waking up early, eating breakfast, waiting an hour or two and then working out for the rest of the day! Life here is suddenly super fun! However, S.H.I.E.L.D. takes things really  serious, so sometimes, it's hard to balance everything out, especially when I'm easily distracted, like this morning. "Hey Alice! You ready for whatever decides to come our way today?" I asked excitedly.

"You are way  too into this new S.H.I.E.L.D. thing," Alice said tiredly. "How can you wake up so easily? I'm up half the night thinking about our plans and I keep trying to come up with new ideas and yahta, yahta, yahta," Alice trailed off. I giggled.

"I guess not all of us share the love," I teased.

"Hey! What's that supposed to mean?" Alice asked.

"Hmm, what should I try to do today?" I asked out loud as Alice and I arrived at the Unit Training Room. "I'm going to start with my usual workout and work my up from there. Alice, what do you think we should-" I turned around and Alice had already disappeared into one of the simulation rooms. "I'll work alone then," I muttered. I set up the bench press bar and then realized I needed a partner. I didn't want to make a mistake during my first week as a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent by breaking even more rules.

"Is someone looking for a buddy?" Katie cooed as she came up behind me.

"I sure am! You think you could help me?" I asked.

"Girl, you know me! I can't lift more than fifty five, unlike you. MA-AX! Can you come over here and help me please?" Katie called. Max was already into his workout and was trying to get to know some of his fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents. He got all embarrassed and turned bright red when they started teasing him.

"Katie, what am I ever going to do with you?" Max said sarcastically as he guided the bar with only one hand while giving Katie that stare.

"You are such  a show off, you know that?" she shot back.

"You would know, wouldn't you?" he asked.

"Oh stop it," Katie said as she started blushing.

"What? I'm not doing anything! Sarah, was I doing anything?" Max asked for my opinion.

"It's called flirting Katie, it's a rather pleasant thing to have to deal with," I answered.

"See," Max started as he pointed at me, "Sarah gets it and she doesn't even have a boyfriend!" Then when he realized what he said, he quickly added, "I didn't mean it like that, I was only trying to say-"

"It's ok Max, I'm over it now," I cut him off as I put the bar back in it's place and sat back up. I let the color drain into my face as I looked around to see if I could find Commander Howlett. Sure enough, he was boxing with one of the punching bags. "Max, can you add five more pounds to both sides please?" I asked without looking away.

"Sure thing," he said. I dreamily watched Commander Howlett as he kept punching.

"He has such perfect, manly arms," I thought.

"Oh Sarah, you have it bad," Katie observed.

"But we couldn't even if we wanted to," I said sadly.

"Why's that?" Katie asked curiously.

"Because it's against the rules for Commandos and higher ranks to date lowly Cadets."

"But, Sarah, you're like, totally forgetting something. You're not a Cadet anymore, you're a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent and last time I checked, that would mean that you actually outrank him," Katie pointed out.

"Oh my gosh! You're right!" I exclaimed as I jumped up. "I can do practically whatever the heck I want!" I joyfully realized. "You know what, HEY MAX," I called, "I DON'T NEED THOSE RIGHT NOW!"

"ARE YOU SERIOUS? AFTER I WALKED ALL THE WAY OVER THERE AND HAULED THEM ALMOST ALL THE WAY BACK?" Max complained sarcastically.

"QUIT YOUR WHINING! YOU'RE A MAN, SO DEAL WITH IT!" Katie yelled back. I patted Katie on the shoulder and jogged over to Alice with a glimmer in my eye.

"Alice! I can do it!" I exclaimed as I stood right in front of her next target.

"What's so important that you gotta ruin my shot for?" Alice asked annoyed.

"Ok, ok, you got me, but believe me, it's important," I said.

"Hold on a second, let me figure out how to turn this thing off, um....there it is! Ok, what?" she asked. I slung my arm around her shoulder as we slowly started to walk out of the Simulation Room.

"Remember how we were only Cadets before?" Alice nodded, "Well, now we're S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents," I waited for Alice to say something, but she only nodded unsurely. "Do you follow?"

"We get slightly better food and major upgrades?" Alice guessed. I slapped my forehead.

"Ok, you were right all along about me and how I feel about Commander Howlett, but I never really made a move before because, well, I was the lowest of them all and now that we're S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents..."

"We can do whatever we want," Alice finished my sentence with wonder, "What are you waiting for? You should be trying to make a move right now!" Alice encouraged me.

"No, if there's one thing I remember about dating it's that you let the guy come to you," I said.

"Sure, but a friendly nudge along the way wouldn't hurt, would it?" she asked with a flashy smile. I smiled back and went to find something I could do that was closer to the punching bags.

"Bobby does yoga, maybe she could teach me?" I thought. From what I've heard, Bobby is nice enough, but she's got to belike, 6' 2 and never smiles around us. If I'm gonna be honest, she kind of intimidates me. I thought, "What the heck, you'll never know unless you try it," so I pulled a yoga mat up and tried to mimic her moves.

"Have you ever done yoga before?" she asked nicely.

"Yes, but mostly in the summer, when I'm not in P.E." I answered. She gave me a startled look.

"How old are  you?"

"18, but I think my birthday is coming up soon. Honestly, I don't know, the months have blurred together ever since Division Training started," I explained.

"You must be the troublemaker then," she commented. I laughed.

"Yes, yes that would be me," I said with a smile.

"I'm Bobby," she said excitedly as she held out her hand.

"My actual name is Sarah," I said as I shook her hand.

"I've been secretly admiring what you did since the moment I found about it," Bobby admitted.

"Then you'd be the first," I said.

"Alright, but if you want to do yoga with me, you've got to do it right," Bobby said as she helped position my body for the poses. Since it had been awhile, we thought it would be best to start off with something easy and relatively simple. While I was holding my posture, I was only feet away from Commander Howlett and I couldn't stop watching him! "Amazing!" Bobby said. I startledly jumped back into position. "What, what did I do?" I asked worriedly.

"You held your posture for almost seven whole minutes! That's unheard of!"

"Oh! I um, I just did it I guess?" I said.

"COULSON, GET OVER! YOU'VE GOT TO HEAR THIS!" Bobby yelled.

"I'm not really sure that's necessary, I was only doing yoga," I tried to persuade her. Commander Howlett stopped to see what was going.

"What's all of the fuss over here about?" Coulson asked calmly as he came over.

"She just broke the record!" Bobby exclaimed. I was getting nervous and didn't want the attention focused on me, especially when all I was doing was working out.

"It was nothing, really! It's not important and I'm sure  someone will break it again by the time I leave," I tried to persuade them, but they wouldn't hear it.

"What's going on? Is something wrong?" Commander Howlett asked as he draped his sweat towel over his shoulder.

"Cadet Adams broke the posture pose record," Coulson informed him.

"If that's supposed to a good thing, then how come she looks so scared?" Commander Howlett asked.

"I don't know, why are  you so nervous?" Coulson asked straight-face.

"I'm not used to the attention I guess," I tried to excuse myself, but Coulson didn't believe me.

"Cadet Adams, how are you handling the adjustments?" Commander Howlett asked. I looked at him confused until I realized what he was doing.

"They're a little overwhelming and trying to get used to my new sleeping pattern is definitely an adjustment," I answered.

"You'll get used to it," Coulson said with a small smile. "Next time Bobby, send a message. You were lucky that I happened to be around," he added with a little attitude as he walked off.

"Don't worry, he'll warm up to you soon enough," Commander Howlett reassured me. I made sure my back was to Bobby as I silently mouthed, "Thank you" to Commander Howlett. He gave a hint of a smile and then went back to his workout and I watched him go until Bobby talked.

"Commander Howlett is very protective of you, why is that?" she asked curiously.

"He was my Commanding Officer way back when I was just a transfer," I replied, "Why'd you want to know?" Bobby glanced back in his direction.

"Howlett is really moody and typically doesn't make new friends easily, especially  in the field," Bobby explained, "What makes you special?" I shrugged my shoulders.

"Couldn't tell ya, there's nothing out of the ordinary about me," I lied.
