Mutants

The past 2 days have been weird; Alex is too scared to try to do anything to me and all of the Commandos are too busy prepping for our Divisions. However, it's mainly because I haven't been the most sociable person lately. Rumors were already floating around on Sunday at lunch.

"Are people really capable of doing such things?" Max asked.

"Totally! They can do a lot more damage than you think," Katie answered.

"Yeah, yeah. I'll believe it when I see it," Vidia said not sounding convinced.

"What's all the excitement about?" I asked as we found a spot to eat at.

"Katie here was telling us about mutants and how scary they are," Alice answered.

"I don't believe any of it. It seems like a made up story to get people all scared and paranoid," Vidia said haughtily.

"What's it called?" I asked.

"They're called mutants and they have powers," Katie informed me.

"What kind of powers?" I asked, suddenly worried.

"Nobody knows for sure. It's said that every single one of them has a different power," Max said.

"No human could ever be capable of doing such a thing. Some movie fanatic probably spread the rumor around," Vidia argued.

"They're not monsters or scary creatures, they're humans?" Alice asked disgustedly.

"Yeah, they're humans and they could be, like, anyone," Katie confirmed.

"For all we know, one of us could be a mutant and we don't even know," Max joked.

"If these 'mutants' are  real, what's so bad about them?" I asked.

"They all have powers, which is considered bad because someone could use them to hurt people, or worse, kill somebody" Vidia explained.

"How did you guys even find out about this?" Alice asked.

"I was talking with Bella yesterday afternoon. I guess she's a Secretary for one of those S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and she had to go to one of his meetings," Katie said.

"What does S.H.I.E.L.D. have to do with any of this? Haven't they ruined things enough?" Max asked.

"Bella didn't say, but she did  mention that this S.H.I.E.L.D. agent she's working with is super hot," Katie said. Mutants? Is that what Commander Howlett was trying to warn me about? His words from Friday night echoed in my head, "S.H.I.E.L.D. They're looking for people who have special abilities."

"Why are you so quiet all of a sudden?" Alice asked me while the others talked.

"Commander Howlett told me that S.H.I.E.L.D. would be watching for people who have powers. I think he was trying to warn me about these mutants," I quietly answered.

"Do you think they're real?" Alice whispered.

"I think it's possible, but I'm not going to worry about it too much. We should try to get through our first week in our Divisions first."

"I agree. Where did you end up?" Alice asked quietly.

"Hey, come on Sarah, Alice. There's no need to keep secrets from us!" Max caught us whispering.

"Sarah was just about to tell me what happened with her and the Division mix up," Alice said.

"Tell us, tell us!" Katie begged excitedly.

"I had to go talk to Commander Howlett about my name not being on the list. He told me that the file that had my results in it was lost. When someone finally found it and brought it to him, it had been messed with," I explained.

"Did someone screw around with your results?" Vidia asked.

"Yep, instead of having only two to three results, someone listed six. Commander Howlett said there wasn't time for me to retake the test and that I'd have to choose which Division I wanted to be in based off of the six Divisions that were falsely listed. The only one that even sounded like something I would've actually gotten as a result was Training or Weaponry," I explained.

"Which one did you choose?" Max asked.

"Training," I announced proudly.

"Who do you think messed with your results, I mean, clearly, you scared Alex away," Katie asked.

"I honestly I have no idea. I'm just glad that I was able to sort it out in time," I answered.

"I'll bet Alex did it even though you thought you scared him off. He probably paid someone to do it for him," Alice commented.

"Perhaps, but he hasn't been around very much," Vidia said.

I was nervous as I walked into the Training Room. It was already familiar to me and I recognized most of my colleagues, but Commander Howlett wasn't there. Instead, Vidia was our "Commander." I say it like that because the real Commander is only here to observe how she handles things to see if she truly has what it takes to become one of them. The whole day was a repeat of day 1, only, more detailed. Since we've all been here a good month or two, we're expected to know the basics like the back of our hand. Now, we have to incorporate actual strategies into everything we do. When the end of the day finally came around, I had a headache.

"Survived our first day, not bad," Vidia said as we walked to dinner together.

"You didn't even flinch up there in front of everyone! Your a natural and I can tell that your going to be great as an official Commander when the time comes," I complimented Vidia.

"At this rate, it might be sooner than you think," Vidia pointed out.

"Are they really that desperate?" I asked. Vidia balanced it out in her head.

"There's a lot they aren't telling us," Vidia said once the gang got back together.

"I'm still not sure about that," Alice said, "I am technically still a newby."

"I am so  not sticking my nose anywhere other than becoming a nurse," Katie contributed.

"Why's that?" Max asked.

"Because, I have way too much stuff to memorize and there's like, a lot I have to remember. I mean, I'll be the one to sew our troopers up when they get hurt, so I have to take it seriously," Katie said.

"I'm not sure I like the idea of you being serious," Max teased. Katie gently slapped him.

"Your just jealous that I have different sides," Katie shot back.

"What is that supposed to mean?" Max asked offended; We all laughed.

"How is being a Computer nerd working out for you?" I asked Alice.

"Great, just great. I have to learn how to write codes for the Weaponry Division and I don't have a clue how to do any of it!" Alice admitted.

"But you were always good at math," I said.

"Sure, but coding is different. It has it's own version of math. I'm practically learning how to read and write a new language!" Alice explained.

"I can't believe they're throwing all of this at us and it was only our first day!" Max complained.

"Try being the Commander-in-training! I was graded on everything I said and did, including every twitch and scratch," Vidia told us.

"What was it like?" Katie asked interested.

"Nerve racking, stressful, and I was terrified," Vidia summed it up.

"I know it was only the first day, but do you feel like training got harder or easier?" Max asked me.

"Um, I'm not quite sure yet, but I'll let you know when I figure it out," I answered.

Realistically, Alice and I weren't that far away from each other. "Do you miss it?" Alice asked. I shrugged my shoulders.

"Miss what?"

"Having a roommate," Alice said expectantly.

"Oh, that! Not really, I'm used to it," I answered without thinking and Alice didn't take it well.

"I guess you're fine without me," she said cooly.

"Alice, I never said that and I didn't mean to offend you. I wasn't thinking," I explained myself.

"I completely understand and would rather have nothing but honesty, especially from you."

"Good, then I'll see you tomorrow?" I asked.

"We'll see," Alice answered as she calmed down.

"Alright, goodnight," I said.

"Goodnight and good luck, you're going to need it," Alice joked as she turned down her hallway. This is going to be quite the adventure, I can feel it.
