My New Friend

I docked the port and grabbed my satchel. I hid every thing else I'd need in the belly of the boat. I looked around at my surroundings. It was very... Isolated. I walked forward. Surely someone would be here if the dock is so well kept. I cut my way through thin vines and thick branches till I saw a faint light. It was across the way but it's not far. I saw a conveniently fallen over tree going over the small pond between me and the light and examined the tree. It looked sturdy and supported. I tested it and put my foot on the tree. Sturdy as it gets. I walked across the tree using it as a bridge. About halfway my foot fell through the tree and I cussed. I pulled my leg out and ran across the tree until I was safely on the other side of the pond. That could have ended in a worse fate. I shook it off and continued to the light. It was on the front of a little house. The sign that was on the door read Welcome To Calypso's treasures, we are always open. I took this as a invite to come in and knocked on a door.

"Come in" announced a thickly Caribbean accented feminine voice. I opened the door. I was caught off guard by how many trinkets and treasures were just... Everywhere.  I looked around and then stopped when I got to a darker skinned women sitting a a table. She looked like a cross between a merchant and a fortune teller in her attire. I flicked my hat, and she nodded at my gesture. I looked around some more. "Looking for something in particular, miss?" She asked. I shook my head, and continued browsing till I saw a little monkey playing in the higher levels of the shop. It had mostly fur, and some bone showing. I don't know why but I wanted it at that moment. I tried to push past it for now and tried to look for something that would help me determine what this broken compass was for. I saw so many exotic items but nothing of real interest besides the monkey. I now sat down at the table taking one more glacé at everything around me and then looked to the woman.

"So you just collect exotic items from all over the place and make a living off of it?" I asked finally. She nodded.

"Something you want looked at?" She asked. I nodded and pulled out the broken compass.

"I'm not sure what it's for... But I found it and I want to know how to use it." I stated setting it on the table. She looked at and smiled.

"Ah the compass of desire. I know this compass well, you see I sold it to a pirate many years ago." She announced. I bit my lip.

"The pirate... His name didn't happen to be Captain Jack Sparrow? Did it?" I asked. She smiled.

"Ah, so you've heard of the brute."

"That's what I was afraid of... Uh, so how does it work?" I asked.

"It's fairly simple, you just think of what you desire most and the compass points the way." She stated. My jaw unhinged from my upper lip.

"Your joking" I stated. She gestured at the compass. I picked it up and held it in my hands. I closed my eyes. What did I most desire at the moment? The monkey. I want the monkey. I opened my eyes and opened the compass. It was pointing in one direction. And it was right at the monkey. She smiled. I smiled at my success and walked slowly to the monkey.

"Ahh, you desire a friend for your journey" she stated. I nodded and smiled at the little guy. He climbed onto the woman's arm and stretched out across her neck. She scratched it head. "He's not just any monkey, he's an undead monkey, he will always be there for you, miss, are you sure you want him?" She asked. I nodded. She held out her arm and he climbed right out to the edge and jump right into my arms nuzzling his head in my coat. I smiled and looked at the woman. She nodded. "What's his name?" She asked Handing me collar with skeletons on it. I pulled him away from my coat and held him in my hands. I was fascinated by the fact that he had bone showing.

"I think I'll call him... Osteo... Short for Osteoporosis" I stated putting his collar on and then placing him on my shoulder. He happily took that as an opportunity to stretch out along my neck. "Thank you so much, you've helped me so much. What's you price for Osteo?" I asked scratching his head like she had. She flicked her wrist.

"I've been trying to get rid of him for years, take him" she stated. I smiled and flicked my hat.

"Thanks again" I thanked, and left the store. Now starts my journey with my new friend. Osteo nuzzled his head into my neck and closed his eyes. I think I'm going to like the company.
