Shirosagi walked out of the throne room and towards Brunai’s chambers, that one being the closer one of the two of them and Shirosagi was too lazy to take those few extra steps. It had been a long day for him, preparing for the attack on the Aoi’s. But it will be worth it; hopefully. Tonight was going to be their final attack. Aoi’s kingdom will fall. Or there will be war.
Shirosagi sighed and walked into Brunai’s chambers, not bothering to knock or make his presence known. They’ve known each other long enough for Brunai to know that it was just Shirosagi being a lazy bastard and not going to his own chambers. Shirosagi fell face-first onto the bed and Brunai sighed, still hoping this would end one day.
“How about knocking?”
“How about no?”
“How about going?”
“How about quiet?
“Whatever.” Brunai turned to face Shirosagi, who didn’t even bother to look up, instead giving Brunai the middle finger when he felt his friend's eyes on him. “When are we attacking?”
“Midnight.” Came Shirosagi’s muffled voice as he lowered his finger and hugged the pillow, not having slept in days was starting to take its toll on him.
“Have you heard about their prince?” Brunai asked, watching Shirosagi with curiosity. Ever since they first met, Brunai had always been intrigued by how Shirosagi would react to certain topics and had always watched him closely, especially when it came to these kinds of things. Why? Well, Shirosagi had always shown psychotic tendencies. All bar one. He had the ability to love, which was strange.
Now he had never outright told Brunai that he was in love, or even held any compassion for anyone. He was a sadistic bastard at the best of times. But sometimes - it’s very few and far between, these episodes are - sometimes it seems like he gives a damn about the people that he surrounds himself with. Now that may only be Brunai, and the odd occasion one maid in specific - no one else was good enough for the prince, but it was still strange. And it intrigued Brunai to no end. Especially when it came to the Aoi child.
“No. What about him?” Shirosagi looked at Brunai as an unreadable emotion flashed across his face, which piqued Brunai’s interest even more.
“He’s been collecting information on us and has been pretty much predicting all of our moves,” Brunai told him, and Shirosagi’s face seemed to light up with interest, to which Brunai tilted his head to the side with a quizzical look on his face.
“He’s the reason we’ve been having such a hard time?” Shirosagi’s eyes were fixated on Brunai as he asked for information, this being one of the few times he could get information about the enemy without it seeming particularly strange.
“Yep. He’s a kid genius or something.” Brunai told him, glancing back at his desk with his notes on Aoi. There wasn’t much - the king didn’t believe in asking questions or gathering information, instead, he would rather use his overwhelming military power to crush the opponent, which was problematic at times. Brunai felt Shirosagi’s stare on the back of his head, and he already knew what question was coming.
“How old?” Shirosagi tilted his head to the side and Brunai leaned back in his chair, assessing the problem in front of him - that problem being the Shirosagi child - and wondered whether his initial reasoning had been wrong, despite many factors coming to the same conclusion.
“Seventeen,” Brunai told him, staring up at the ceiling as he listened for any change in voice or delay in reaction.
“Same age as us?” Shirosagi asked, with some surprise in his voice, like he didn’t already know the answer to this. Brunai narrowed his eyes at the ceiling. Something about his reaction felt weird. Off, in a way. He just couldn’t figure out why.
“Yep,” Brunai said, his eyes returning to Shirosagi, who was still flopped over the bed, not bothering to sit up properly. It looked kinda uncomfortable.
“I wonder if he’s ever held a weapon.” There was a sort of wonder in Shirosagi’s eyes as he considered the possibility. Maybe it was less compassion and more a blood lust. He wanted his prey to be able to fight back. It made the hunt that bit more interesting. You see what we meant by sadistic bastard?
“No idea,” Brunai replied as he watched Shirosagi, trying to figure out what was wrong with the young Prince other than his obvious sadistic nature and psychotic tendencies.
“Some help you are,” Shirosagi mumbled, moving into a more comfortable position on the bed, pulling out a knife from who knows where and spinning it around on one finger.
“We have a library. Use it.” Brunai said bluntly, which earned a scowl in response as Shirosagi looked up from playing up with the knife.
Shirosagi sat up on the bed and stared at Brunai. “Hey, Gabe?”
“What, Lui?” Brunai glanced at Shirosagi, and there was silence for a couple of seconds before Shirosagi decided to speak.
“It’s nothing, don’t worry about it.” He mumbled, his eyes falling to the floor as he seemed to think things over and reconsider what he was initially going to say, which was unlike him, but Brunai chose not to question his change in behaviour.
“Pain in the ass,” Brunai said, and Shirosagi scowled, his behaviour starting to become normalised once again. At least, normalised as his behaviour can be.
“I heard that,” Shirosagi growled, which only earned a smirk in response, a taunting look in his eyes.
“Good,” Brunai replied, and they both glared at each other. “I’m glad you’ve finally learned the truth. I appreciate it might be hard for you to find this out, but I thought I’d be the one to tell you.”
“I hate you so much, and I hope you remember that. The only reason I keep you around is that you keep things interesting otherwise I would have left you for dead.” Shiroagi told him, and Brunai shrugged, his threats no longer fazing the brunette. “I hope you know I’m sleeping in here.”
Brunai snorted, not surprised by the demand but wondering where this could escalate if he refused the demand. “No, you’re not.”
“What are you gonna do? Carry me to my room?” Shirosagi smirked, challenging Brunai’s integrity as his eyes darted around the room, already disinterested in the conversation at hand and prepared for a change in pace.
“That’s what the window is for,” Brunai said, his eyes moving to the window in front of him, wondering the best way to get Shirosagi out the window with minimal fight and a lack of broken bones.
“Fair enough.” Shirosagi yawned, rubbing his eyes and sparing Brunai a glance, who only scowled at him, knowing what was going to come next “I’m gonna take a nap.”
Brunai sighed, putting down his pen and leaning back in his chair. He already knew this conversation was going to be redundant. The Shirosagi child was relatively good at hiding his emotions for the most part, so he highly doubts he’s gonna get anything else out of the boy. “Go to your own room and nap.”
“That’s too far away,” Shirosagi whined, closing his eyes and looking up at the ceiling, taking shallow breaths. It was almost like a ritual.
“You are literally next door.” Brunai stared at the shorter male, who seemed to be concentrating fairly hard.
“Still too far.” Shirosagi opened his eyes, staring at a spider that was walking across the ceiling, somehow knowing about its presence.
“I’m serious about the window,” Brunai told him, which earned a shrug from Shirosagi, who seemed unfazed by the threat.
“Go on then. It means I’m already outside for later.” Shirosagi said, tearing his eyes away from the spider and looking at Brunai, who had an annoyed look on his face. He was already fed up with the young prince.
“For someone so fit, you are one lazy bastard,” Brunai commented, his eyes skimming over Shirosagi who had a distant look on his face.
“I know.” Shirosagi seemed to snap out of his trance, visibly confused for a couple of seconds, and then smiled “If you did throw me out the window, remind me to thank you later. It saves me walking there myself.”
Brunai stared at him, contemplating whether to punch him or throw him out of the window. Both seemed like a good option, but one had the possibility to start a fight. He settled on throwing a random object at him, not wanting to start a fight he knows he can’t win. The bastard had a way of getting the upper hand on people without them expecting it. He was much like the wonder boy in that sense.
“Asshole,” Brunai mumbled, questioning how he got stuck with such an egotistical pain in the first place.
“That all?” Shirosagi checked, undaunted by any and all names thrown towards him. It was a gift, really. He could withstand basically anything.
“Yep.” Brunai nodded, too tired to try and get through to him, knowing it could take hours.
“Great. Goodnight.” Shirosagi leaned back against the wall and fell asleep, a content look on his face; a rare sight nowadays. No one is quite sure what happened to him - what turned him from this delightful prodigy to an arrogant tyrant - but they can still grab glimpses of who he once was every now and then, usually when he’s asleep. Brunai sighed and shoved Shirosagi off of the bed so he could have a nap too. Shirosagi let out a small grunt but didn’t argue. At least he didn’t get thrown out of the window.
