II
Xu rode the carriage all the way to Whiterun and he made pleasant small talk with the carriage driver. He settled down, found a job, and had a peaceful life.
Not.
The carriage driver was nasty to him and dumped him outside outside of Riften. Suddenly, Xu didn't feel as bad for taking all the gold in his bag. He started making the trek toward Falkreath, but found a stranded horse wandering the road.
"Hello, are you lost?"
The horse scampered over to him and pushed it's head into his chest.
"Alright, I'll take you with me."
Hopping up onto the horse's back, he rode the horse the rest of the way to Falkreath. They stopped in town only briefly to purchase apples and bread.
They continued up the path toward Whiterun. A near deafening roar came up from behind Xu. The horse bucked him off and ran away.
"Coward!"
Lifting himself to the near destroyed watchtower, his eyes widened in horror. A huge monster perched atop the ruins.
"A...dragon?"
"Attack!"
Xu spun around and jumped out of the way of Whiterun guards. Xu, even with his thieving nature, couldn't let these men go in alone. He ran through the guards snatching a bow, a ton of steel arrows, and a sword.
He climbed to the top of the tower, avoiding the firey pbreath attacks narrowly. Every time the dragon landed, he fought with his sword and every time the dragon lifted off the ground he shot at it with his bow.
"Faaz nah! Ruth! Perish mortals!"
Xu couldn't believe his ears. Dragons could speak like people?
"No matter. I'll put an end to this!"
Without realizing his hood came undone, Xu jumped from the top of the tower, sword raised. With one swift slice, the dragon's head came flying off. Xu felt his ears twitch toward the human guards.
He turned to them and went to pull his hood to cover his face. His hood wasn't there, prompting him to panic. He quickly threw down the weapons, to not give the clearly more experienced men and women an excuse to attack him.
"Boy...your the Dragonborn?!"
"What...is a Dragonborn?"
"They say they have the appearance of a mortal, but the blood and soul of the dragon. You must come and see the Jarl at once."
"I'm good! A freak of nature really shouldn't see someone so important!"
Xu was using every reason he could to avoid meeting the Jarl.
"Nonsense! You saved all our lives and even absorbed the dragon's soul! The Jarl will be overjoyed to meet you!"
Xu was now trapped in a ring of guards escorting him to the castle. Everytime he tried to escape the circle, he was nudged back into place. Soon enough he was in front of the Jarl, hood pulled tightly over his head.
"So. You're the Dragonborn. Pleasure to meet you young man."
"L-likewise Jarl Balgruuf. I-I am honored to hear that from you."
"Irileth."
"Right away."
The Dunmer woman walked toward Xu, stopped right in front of him. She quickly ripped the hood off his head. His ears popped up from being pressed to his head. Balgruuf and Irileth's eyes bulged at the apparently, not Nord young man they assumed him to be.
Poor Xu was panicking so much he passed out, falling back toward the center fire. Irileth caught him and,, unashamedly, pet his ears.
"Irileth, take him to Farengar. I will speak with him once he has woken up again."
"Of course."
Irileth lifted the strange Dragonborn over her shoulder. She carried him into Farengar's little lab area to place him on the bed.
"Is that the Dragonborn?"
"Yes."
"He looks like a Nord, but he has Khajiit ears. Does he have a tail?"
"Probably."
Irileth left the wizard alone. He undid the belt on the boy's dress, saw his tail, and dressed him into more comfortable clothing; ie: red shirt and brown leather pants. Xu, now in comfortable clothing, slept soundly, rolling on his side to curl into a ball.
His tail was fitted into a cut hole into the pants to provide further comfort. Xu slept for a full day and a half before he woke up.
"What in the Divines happened?"
"Ah, your awake. Good morning, my strange friend."
Xu looked up from his hands to see a man clad in blue robes. His hands flew to his head to hide his ears.
"Don't fret. Everyone in the castle already seen your ears and tail. Is the clothing I provided comfortable?"
"Um, yeah. Thank you for them."
Xu hesitantly lowered his hands and stood up. Next to the bed was a pair of fine black boots. Sliding them on, Xu followed the man from the small room he slept in. He found his hat on the table, so he quickly snagged it while the man's back was turned and pulled it over his head. Also tucking his tail into the pants, tying a large piece of red cloth around his waist.
"Son, are you hungry?"
"Yes."
Xu saw no point in lying to the man who helped him.
"Good. The Jarl will speak to you as you eat."
"The Jarl?!"
"Calm down, Jarl Balgruuf isn't a terrifying man."
Xu was escorted to the dining hall wearing the Jarl sat at a table eating a plate of mutton and baked potatoes.
"Boy, it is good to see you've awakened. Sit, eat as much as you want."
Xu cautiously made his way to the table, eyeing a huge piece of horse meat. He ended up inhaling the entire slab of meat, before anyone realised.
"You were hungry. When was the last time you had a meal?"
"I ate some bread in Falkreath traveling from Riften."
"By shor, that must've been days ago, did you eat your fill?"
"Yes, Jarl."
"Good, what brings you to Whiterun?"
"I just wanted to explore. I live in The Reach my whole life, so when I acquired the funds, I went to Riften, got more gold and came here."
"I see. Since you are a traveler now, I can outfit you with the best gear as thanks for saving my people."
"I greatly appreciate that, Jarl Balgruuf."
Xu hid a smirk by drink a bit of the milk poured for him.
"With those formalities out of the way, I am greatly intrigued by what you are. I have never seen such a fascinating being."
"Okay?"
"Who are your parents?"
"I don't know. My caretaker told me that a hooded figure put me on a tree stump when I was baby and left me there. Had she not been there, I would've died."
"Caretaker?"
"Yes, my caretaker was a Spriggan by the name of Duskthorne. She raised me with two other Spriggans and a Hagraven."
"So you're adept in magic?"
"No, I have no innate ability aside from a bit of restoration. I'm more efficient with a bow."
"I have the perfect bow for you. Follow me."
Xu stood up, following Balgruuf. They went through the palace until they reach his own personal quarters. Balgruuf rummaged through a large chest before pulling our the sleekest ebony bow Xu has ever seen.
"I have only a small quiver of arrows, but this should do the job nicely. Take this missive to Eorlund Gray-Mane. He will outfit you with the best armour he has."
"I thank you for this kindness, but the bow is enough. I don't need the best armor. That can be expensive."
"Son, I'm a Jarl. I can afford it. Now go. Get your armor and enjoy your travels. There will always be a place for you in Whiterun."
"Thank you, Jarl Balgruuf."
"Hang a moment, I never got your name."
"Oh, my name's Xu."
