Prologue
This prologue takes place on the Sunday before the first week of the game.
Ayano walked along the streets in her black raincoat. It was dark and raining, but it was pretty. She looked at the sky and smiled as a drop of rain fell on her nose. She held out her arm, and raindrops fell and hit her hand. Ayano loved observing the beauty of rain. Everyone else thought rainy weather was gloomy and sad, but Ayano thought it was more beautiful than sunny weather. She sat down and watched the rain for a bit, smiling when it hit her face. The cold water was refreshing after a day spent indoors all alone. Ayano wished that she had some company — her parents had left for America that morning, and she was all by herself. Her house was big and nicely decorated, but what was the point of having such a nice house if you were the only one there? Ayano sighed and looked down at the puddles in the sidewalk. She thought of her friends from school — Mina, Yui, Yuna, and Mei. They were lots of fun to hang out with, and Ayano wished she could see them, but Mei was studying for a test, Yui and Yuna were both out of town for the weekend and Mina was sick with the flu. Suddenly, from around the corner, Ayano heard a small mewl, and froze.
She turned around the corner, curiosity eating away at her conscience. She unzipped her bookbag and gripped a knife she had brought with her in her hand, just in case somebody jumped her. But when she looked down the alley, there was nothing more than a small kitten. The poor thing was cold, wet, and shivering. He was black all over, with a small black nose and glimmering golden eyes. He mewled helplessly again, and looked up at Ayano, begging for her help. Ayano felt awful — this innocent little thing would die soon if she didn't do something. She knelt down and picked up the small bundle of fur, and he happily snuggled against her, still mewing pathetically. "You poor little baby!" she cried. She hugged him against her chest and tucked him inside her jacket with the zipper unzipped a tiny bit at the top. He snuggled against her chest, purring softly. Ayano tucked away her knife in her bag and quickly sprinted down the sidewalk, all the way back to her home.
Once they were inside, Ayano got a towel from the bathroom and draped it over the pillow, then took the kitten into the bathroom and washed him off with warm water. She wrapped him up in a hand towel and placed him on her bed. She got two silver bowls from the kitchen and placed them near the counter, then filled one with water and the other with cat food she found in the pantry. Cat food doesn't go bad, does it? ...Nah, she thought as she filled the kitten's food bowl. Then, while her new furry friend slept peacefully in her room on her bed, she took some cardboard boxes from the basement and used them to make an awesome cat fort. Ribbons, napping platforms covered by carpet samples that doubled as parkour, a tower at the top to overlook the room that was tall enough that if he aimed right the kitten could jump onto the kitchen counter, the whole bit. When she was done, she went into her room to check on her new pet, then realized she hadn't named him yet. The little ball of fur curled up on her lap as she sat on her bed and thought of the perfect name. Ayano looked down at the little kitten and told him, "Your name will be Ninja."
