Chapter 3 - Choices
There it was. Oka's lunch. The lunch of the girl Ayano so badly needed to kill to get her Senpai, left unattended. Ayano had the poison in her bookbag, stolen from the chemistry lab. She could poison Oka's food right now. Oka had left to use the toilet, and Ayano would never get another chance like this. There would be no evidence, and it would be so quick, so clean of an execution that Oka probably wouldn't feel any pain at all...right...? Ayano shook her head. Oka was all she could think of. She took the place of where Senpai would usually be at this time of day. She thought harder, and Oka faded. Senpai returned. Senpai, her oh-so-dreamy Senpai. She sighed and patted her heart, giggling as she delicately glazed Oka's bento with the deadly chemical. Once Oka swallowed just one bite, it would be over.
She would fall on the ground, coughing violently, while Ayano pretended to try and save her. Everyone on the roof would hear and try to help, but it wouldn't work. Oka would say her final words and Ayano would whisper her secret into the dying girl's ear, before Oka went limp and shut her eyes forever. People would assume she choked, and although Senpai and her club members would mourn, Ayano would be one step closer to her goal. And that was all that mattered.... right?
Ayano took out her notebook and drew a little picture of her and Senpai, with Osana-chan looking on in fury as they walked hand-in-hand. They looked so happy. Ayano decided to add a little more cheer to the photo and draw a sad-looking Oka next to Osana. But Ayano quickly regretted drawing it. The piercing, tearful eyes of the tiny chibi Oka made her feel guilty about something. But it was so well-drawn, she couldn't scribble it out. So she added blushing cheeks, which seemed to make it better for some reason. Ayano admired her work until she heard the doors beside her open as Oka came back. "H-Hi, Ayano, thanks for guarding m-my lunch." The girl clearly wasn't as shy now, because she wasn't stuttering as much anymore. However, she was blushing. Weird. Oka sat down and picked up her lunch box, and Ayano smirked as she fumbled with the chopsticks until she managed to grab a bite. She smiled sweetly and slowly went to put the morsel in her mouth, but everything seemed to be in super slow motion for Ayano.
Her heart sped up. Her eyes teared up. She blushed. She felt immense fear tug at her chest. Her brain screamed at her. Stop her! Stop her! She'll die! "That's what I'm going for!" Ayano snapped at herself. Oka didn't seem to hear her. Save Oka, save her before she eats it! She'll die and it will be all your fault! Ayano didn't understand why her conscience, her "Dere" personality, wanted to save her rival so badly. "If I save her, will you leave me alone?!" she cried. Stop her from eating it, Ayano-chan! Stop her now! "Alright!" she shouted at herself. Everyone went back to normal speed, and just before Oka put the piece of sushi in her mouth, Ayano shouted, "Oka, stop!" Her rival dropped the bento, spilling it on the floor. It didn't seem like she got any poison in her mouth or around her lips. That was a close call. The voice in Ayano's head sighed with relief. I still don't understand why you want her to survive, Ayano told her brain, then snapped back to Oka. "I-I saw a bee going for your food!" Oka tensed up. She was clearly afraid of things that stung. "B-bee? Where?!" She pressed her back against the wall and shut her eyes. "It's gone now," Ayano said. "But I don't think you should eat that," she added with a laugh. Oka nodded and managed a weak smile.
Ayano got a trash can from the second floor and cleaned up the mess. She offered Oka a dollar for a soda to make up for startling her into spilling her lunch. Koharu Hinata, the "shipper girl" of the Rainbow Six, took a picture of the two girls together and posted it to her Instagram with the caption "LMAO, I ship it so much! They look way cuter than Ayano and that Taro guy." The fact that she read it out loud to herself as she typed it made sure they both heard her. Oka blushed and looked awkward, and Ayano laughed nervously, holding back the urge to blush too. Along with the urge to run up and slap Koharu. Ayano was contemplating whether that was a bad idea or not when she noticed a boy that looked similar to Oka watching them sadly from a table. His messy purplish-blue hair cast a shadow over his tired-looking, light purple eyes, and the silver crescent moon of a black Occult Club choker glimmered in the light from the window. He looked like he hadn't slept at all the night before. Shin Higaku, Ayano thought. He must be Oka's suitor.
Ayano held her bookbag tightly, grasping the portion where her kitchen knife was. All of a sudden, Ayano had the urge to kill Shin. Just brutally stab him, right in the brain, wearing a demon mask (for irony), with dozens of witnesses. She wanted to kill him more than she had ever wanted to kill anyone, even her rivals for Senpai. But why? Shin hasn't witnessed anything and he doesn't have a crush on my precious Senpai, she thought as Oka bought her soda. Why do I want him to die so badly??!
Ayano didn't think of it for long. She whispered something to herself before Oka walked up to her, smiling sweetly. "Thanks for letting me buy a soda, Ayano," the small girl said. "You're too sweet to me!" Ayano took note that while Oka wasn't stammering anymore, she was blushing again. Is it possible...? Ayano thought. Is it possible to replace a Senpai...? she finished in her head. No! Her brain snapped. You're a Yandere! You have a Senpai and that Senpai is Taro. You will kill anyone who gets in your way!!
"And Oka is one of them..." Ayano sniffled quietly. She had grown close to Oka but had a strong distaste for Shin for whatever reason. Matchmaking was out of the question — would she really have to kill her friend for her future lover? She decided not to think about it as the bell for second class rang. She waved goodbye to Oka, then hurried off to her own class. "Oka..." Ayano whispered. "I don't want to lose you to my own Senpai..." Suddenly her face fell emotionless and serious, as her mind spoke six words to her. You will do what you must, said both her "Yan" and "Dere" sides together. Before now, only the "Dere" side had won, allowing Ayano to spare her three previous rivals. But now both of them were going to get their way for the first time in history...
