Chapter 43
"I'm going to call Tim, he needs to know about this" Jenika smiled pulling her phone from her pocket.
"Callie...can you tell Momma why you drew this" Heather asked while the others gathered around the table.
Maggie placed the snack of cookies and milk on the table Callie asked for while she climbed up onto the chair. "They told me too" she replied matter of factly, taking a cookie from the plate.
"Baby..who told you....who are they" Maggie asked, while Jenika stood in the doorway relaying what Callie was telling them.
"Pappa" she said, taking a sip of her milk " and Ms. Caroline "
Heather and Maggie looked at one another, unsure of what to believe at the moment. "Callie...um, when did they tell you to draw these pictures you've given us" Heather asked the four year old enjoying her cookies.
"Sometimes, when I'm sleeping they come visit me, sometimes when I'm coloring they whisper in my ear. It's ok, Momma, they're not strangers, we've known each other a long time" the little one told them, sipping more of her milk.
Shivers ran down Maggie's spine listening to the words coming from Callie. She always "talked" to Alan, asking him to watch over Heather and Chance, even more after his near death experience. Callie's words confirmed he had been, the proof was in her drawings.
Heather smiled, gently sliding her hand down her daughters hair. She had wished her Dad could have been with them for all the important things, her finding Jake and especially for the birth of his granddaughter. She wiped a tear from her eye now knowing all along he'd never really left her, he knew everything and the best was knowing he met Callie before she did.
Jenika listened to Callie's explanation, passing it along to Tim on the phone. She heard the quiver in his voice after she mentioned Caroline. "Are you ok baby" she asked him quietly.
Tim took a deep breath, fighting back the tears. The mention of Caroline, his first and only truest love, guiding everyone to find his best friend, his brother she had never met, through this young child, it took over his emotions. " I'm.." he hesitated, clearing his throat, unsure of how his wife would react to his reaction he simply replied " yes, I'm fine".
"Tim, the details in her drawing and what she's telling everyone, it's mind blowing " Jenika remarked while Callie explained her picture.
"See Mimi, Uncle Chance will be ok. Uncle Austin and Daddy are going to find him" she told them before finishing her milk. "Can I go play now" she asked her mom, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand.
Heather told her she could while they all stared at her drawing. "This is kind of freaky but at the same time amazing" she said, not realising she'd spoken aloud.
"They say children are sensitive to seeing and hearing from those in the afterlife. I never really believed it before, but these pictures are starting to make me a believer " Marcus remarked.
"Has Tim heard anything" Maggie asked Jenika who was still on the phone with her husband.
"Okay baby, I'll talk to you soon. Love you too" she told him before answering Maggie. "No, he and Rob have been outside waiting for any signs of their return. The last information he received was they were going to check Port Eads."
"Port Eads, that's quite a ways out, it's closer to Mississippi " Heather replied with an agreeing nod from Marcus.
Maggie picked up the drawing staring at it again. She ran her fingers over the area Callie had drawn Chance " he's there, I can feel it. Jake and Austin will find him".

Hearing the rustling of the brush nearby, Chance barely opening his eyes saw two blurred figures before him. Overtaken by fear at the yelling and the figures coming towards him he grabbed his sword (stick) and screamed hoarsely "NO....NO...I'LL KILL YOU, I SWEAR"
Austin stepped closer, jumping over the stick while Chance swung it back and forth barely above the ground. Jake moved behind the log, positioning himself in place to grab the stick when he suddenly swung it upwards over his head. In doing so he'd hit Jake just above his right eye. "What the fuck Chance, just stop" he barked as blood began to trickle down his face. Chance continued to yell and swing the stick around.
Strain advised both Austin and Jake to back away, he and his crewmen would subdue him. "Guys, you have to remember, he's been without food or water for days. He's not in his right mind, we have to do this our way."
Jake wasn't about to argue, the last thing he wanted was to get whacked in the head again. Austin stepped back, unsure how anyone would be able to stop him. It was as if Chance were a mad man, like he'd lost his mind.
Within minutes Strain and the others had the weapon and him subdued on the ground. Chance tried desperately to get out from under their restraint, screaming and writhing in fear. Strain pulled out a syringe, quickly injecting the contents into Chance shoulder. Within seconds he became limp, no longer combative towards his rescuers. He then rolled Chance over, positioned himself to lift him off the ground and placed him across his shoulders.
" Radio the chopper, advise them he's been located and to deploy the diver and stokes" he instructed his crewmen and began walking briskly back along the pathway.
By the time they'd reached the beach the diver had the stokes basket on the sand, prepared for transport. With assistance from the others they lay him within the basket, covered him with the sheets and strapped him in. The diver then signaled for the cable to be dropped, entering the water to retrieve it while the others carried the basket towards him. Attaching the cable securely he once again signaled the chopper to lift it up while he walked along side ensuring it never entered the water. The others watched from shore as Chance was drawn upward and finally inside the chopper.
"What happens now" Austin asked nervously.
"The crew on board will do an initial assessment, treat as necessary and transport him to the trauma center" Strain replied.
Adam had watched the rescue unfold before his eyes. He pulled out his phone, recording the preparation and hoisting of his friend into the chopper. He continued to record the flight crew assessing his unconscious friend. They worked feverishly to take vitals and set up IV fluids.
"Sir, you need to secure yourself, we're about to head back" the pilot advised him.
"Where are you taking him" he asked looking at his sunburnt, unresponsive brother.
"South Baldwin Regional Medical Center in Foley, Sir " he replied before speeding off in the direction of the hospital.
Adam then prepared a text for Tim, attaching the video, including where he was being transported to. The others returned to the patrol boat and headed back to the Coast Guard base.

Tim was pacing back and forth, caught in his thoughts about Callie's drawings, worried that he hadn't had an update in several hours. "Tim, sit down. You're going to walk off all the grass over there " Rob joked.
"What?..huh?..Oh, yeah guess you're right Rob..sorry " Tim replied now sitting next to Rob. Suddenly Rob turned, looking out over the horizon. "Is that... is that the chopper " he asked, pointing to the light coming towards them.
"I think so..sure sounds it" Tim stated, standing ready to head towards the landing pad.
As the sound intensified and the light became brighter, they watched as the chopper rapidly approached and flew over them, changing course and flying eastward.
Tim's phone went off immediately after the pass over, notifying him of an incoming text. He quickly opened the screen "He's alive, condition unknown, heading to medical center, watch video".
Tim ran his hand through his hair as he read and watched what Adam had sent.
"Why did they fly over....did they find him?" Rob asked concerned.
Tim turned the phone towards Rob, replaying the video.
