Chapter 41

Marcus called for Maggie throughout the house and backyard becoming more nervous with each passing moment of no response from her. As he entered the back door Callie ran up to him with her latest drawing.

"Grandpa Marcus where's Mimi, I want to show her my picture " she told him, climbing up onto the chair.

"I can't seem to find her baby, where's your Mom" he asked, pulling out his phone and not looking at her drawing.

"She's upstairs. Grandpa, you want to see it" she replied anxiously.

Marcus was too distracted by Maggie's absence to really look at the drawing. He had dialed her cell phone only to hear it ringing in her bag on the table.

"She's as bad as her son" he stated aloud as Heather walked in.

"You're just figuring that out now " Heather chuckled while pouring a cup of coffee.

"Mommy, look at my picture" Callie said, trying to get her mom's attention.

"I can't seem to find her and she left her phone in her bag. Did she tell you anything" Marcus asked her.

Heather sipped her coffee as she walked over to Callie, "She's probably in the back field. She always goes there to talk with Dad when she can't fix something that's gone wrong" she told him.

Of all the places he hadn't looked he nodded and headed to the door. "I'm heading down there to see if she's ok"

"Umm, maybe we should go with you" she replied, holding up Callie's drawing.

"Ok, based on what they can see from the air and our preliminary scan of the area, you and Jake can now head in Austin" Captain Strain advised.

Within seconds the two ran to the wreckage, looking for anything that would help in locating Chance.

"Austin, look...his cell phone..it's in pieces" Jake remarked finding it on the table below deck.

"There's broken glass...look, does this look like blood to you" he asked Jake, handing over a shirt.

They looked at each other, assuming he had suffered some injury, now fearing how severe. Finding nothing more substantial they returned to where Strain and a few others stood.

"He apparently had the foresight to start a fire at one point " he stated pointing to the small fire pit.

"Why didn't anyone see any fire or smoke and report it. Don't planes and boats go around this area all the time" Austin asked just as they heard a loud grunting noise.

"What the hell was that " Jake asked.

"Don't move..either of you..stay where you are" Strain advised as he could see the wild boar approaching behind them.

"What the...."Austin began when Strain shot him a look to be quiet. As they all stood still as statues the boar walked up directly behind Austin, raising its nose in the air sniffing. Austin stared at Strain, pleading with his eyes to have him sway the animal away, only to be grinned at by the Captain. Soon the animal walked around him and scurried across towards the opposite side of the beach.

"Thought you were a country boy" Strain teased.

"Very funny" Austin retorted sighing with relief.

"You might wanna check your shorts" Jake whispered, just as relieved as he was.

Strain explained to each how they would begin searching the wooded area. It being so dense it was impossible for the flight crew to really see anything past the tree tops. Handing Jake and Austin each a walkie talkie, he pointed to the area he wanted them to search. "Spread out a bit but not too far away from each other. We don't need to be searching for you too. Call with anything you find that looks questionable, the smallest change in the foliage can be a clue. If you're ready, let's go"  Strain advised as they began their trek into the woods.

Jenika stood a bit behind Maggie ensuring she wasn't seen. A tear escaping her eye, she watched as the mother before her switched out the flowers in the vase that was affixed to the headstone while she spoke.

"Alan...you need to guide that boy home...I can't lose him after all this...after you....please, bring him home, please" she asked, her voice shaking when she heard a commotion behind her. She turned to see Marcus, Heather and Callie running down the path behind her. Jenika stepped forward, hoping they had heard some news.

"Mimi....Mimi...look...look at my picture" Callie yelled excitedly.

Maggie wiped her eyes before Callie handed her the drawing, explaining everything. Maggie looked up at the others, seeing hope in all their eyes. "Is it possible, could this really be true" she thought, looking at the picture before her.
