Chapter 39
Alex's POV
*About a week later*
Classes resumed soon after John's hospitalization, and it became harder to cope with the quiet. There were so many times I wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn't come. The story seemed to have floated around the school, because now, most everyone would cast us sidelong glances and the occasional sympathetic one. Everything around me just seemed to slow down. Nothing really seemed like reality. I mean sure, I've lost family before and now I've made the mistake of getting close to other people again. Now, they're all the suffering because of me. Currently, I'm sitting in my empty dorm, typing away. I've decided to take online classes until further notice. At least then, I won't have to deal with anyone's sympathy.
Laf and Herc burst into the dorm more often than usual, probably trying to comfort me. Angelica was hardly around anymore, and when she was, she was usually on the phone, yelling at someone. I made it a habit to visit John daily. I made him a promise that I would take care of him and I plan on keeping it.
"Hey, buddy." A voice said. I quickly shut my laptop and a short, round black-and-white cat was sitting behind it. I lurched backwards, hitting the back of my head on the headboard of the bed. "I think you should go visit Johnny boy. He's missing you."
I stared at the cat as I rubbed the back of my head. "And now, I'm going mad. Talking cats." The cat let out a loud laugh.
"You aren't mad. I can talk. I just don't unless I really need to get a human's attention. Which, in this case, is you." The cat explained. I stayed quiet, really not knowing what to say. "At least I managed to shut you up, not many can do that. Anyway, you need to see John. Get going, right now. Otherwise, you might miss your chance." With that, it turned away and opened the door before striding out. I'm going mad.
I decided to listen to the weird cat that was just here, mostly because I was planning on visiting John today anyway. My favorite hoodie was with Peggy, so I only had the old one I brought with me from when I first came here. After putting down my laptop properly and slipping on my shoes, I raced out of the dorm and off campus. Now, I might've taken transport because I'm lazy, but today I decided to run.
It was less than a five-minute run, so I really wasn't tired once I'd gotten there. I went through the door of hospital and holding it open for an older couple who was walking out. I went up to the desk and he handed me a "visitors sticker" and pointed to the double doors on the left. Thanking him, I went through the, putting the sticker in my pocket. I don't like stickers and they most certainly don't like me. After glancing at each of the room numbers, I finally found John's, 182.
I twiddled my thumbs as I sat in John's room silently contemplating what went wrong. Sighing, I finally decided to talk to him, even though I might be wasting my breath. "J-john, I don't know if you can hear me, but I just wanted to say that I'm sorry. I'm sorry I caused you this pain, I'm sorry that I wasn't more vigilant, I'm sorry I wasn't there to protect you like I promised. I just hope that if, no, when you wake up, you'll be able to forgive me."
Lafayette's POV
"'Erc, you cannot keep blaming yourself. It is not your fault, it vous Elizabeth's." I said, patting Herc's back.
"And I'm supposed to be his mum. Now, I'll never see my baby boy again!" Herc sniffed from under his sheets.
"You will see him again. We know John. He vould not give up on us that easily, so we should do the same for him." I assured him. He sniffed again and didn't reply. I hugged him through the sheets, praying John would be alright.
"You should listen to the French fry," I voice giggled. Looking up at the headboard of the bed, I noticed a small, round black-and-white cat sitting on it. I screamed and fell backwards off the bed. Herc poked his head out of the sheets and noticed the cat, but he didn't seem afraid at all. In fact, he was rather intrigued.
"You can talk?" He asked.
"'Course I can, you just heard me do it a moment ago." It laughed. "Now, you two need to get to the hospital. You need to go see John. And before you ask any questions," It said, glancing at Herc. "Let's just say that you'll miss something spectacular if you don't start heading out soon." Once it had finished, it leaped off the headboard and strode over to the door before opening it and leaving.
"Do you think we should g-" I began, but Herc cut me off.
"Yes."
Peggy's POV
I sat in the waiting room of the animal emergency hospital and darted my eyes to the door behind the reception desk whenever anyone walked in or out of it, hoping and praying for a piece of news, preferably good news. After a few more minutes the veterinarian came out to speak to me. "Pidge is now well enough to be discharged, but you'll need to bring her in for therapy at least three times a week. Go up to the desk to sign the papers while I get Pidge for you." She said, smiling. A wave of emotion overcame me and the next things I know, I'm kneeling on the floor sobbing into her coat.
Stifling a laugh, Maria hauled me off her and marched me to the desk. After finishing the paperwork, the veterinarian came out with Pidge on a leash. She handed the leash to us before heading back. Maria took the hoodie she was carrying out of her mouth and inspected it closely. "Isn't this John's?" She asked, handing it to me. I paused in hugging Pidge to look up at the hoodie. I nodded and looked from the hoodie to Pidge and back again.
"He was still watching over us that night, even though he wasn't physically able." I choked out. I lifted Pidge and hugged them both tightly. Once I regained myself, we left and went back to campus.
I sat in my room with Pidge and Maria. Maria was throwing toys around for Pidge to play with while I sat in thought. Pidge then went towards my bed and looked underneath it before dipping her head and backing away slightly. Then, a small, round black-and-white cat slipped out. "Hi, Peggy and Maria." It said, beaming.
"Hold up, did you just speak?" Maria asked, perplexed. I wasn't surprised, animals these days seemed to amaze me every day, so I got used to it. But, I think I've seen this cat before.
"Indeed. Now, I'm glad Pidge got out alright and all, but you need to go visit John, right now. Otherwise, you going to miss something you won't want to miss. And you can bring Pidge, I'm sure she'll be glad to go." It said. Pidge nodded in agreement. "Oh, and you're welcome for helping you the other night," It said, winking. It abruptly turned tail and raced out of the room, opened the door, and left.
"Now I know where I saw that cat before!" I exclaimed, startling Maria. "Sorry. But, that cat is one of the pair who led us to the animal emergency hospital." I explained. A confused look came over Maria before understanding dawned on her. "Let's go!" I yelled, lifted Pidge and ran out the door, Maria on my heels.
John's POV
I stood up and occasionally stretched a hand towards one of the door knobs before pulling back. "Which should I choose?" I asked myself, knowing no one could help me.
"Need some help, do we?" A voice chuckled from behind me. I whipped around and jumped back as a small, round black-and-white cat who was, apparently, floating in front of me.
"As a matter of fact, I do," I said, staring at the cat. "But I don't think you can help me."
"Follow your heart, not your head." It said before fading into a wisp of mist.
"How the heck is that supposed to help?!" I called after it. Suddenly, something tapped my shoulder and I nearly fell over from surprise.
"Did you really think that I'd be all sappy and stuff? Heck no. I'm too lazy to be like that anyway." It laughed. "Take the door on the right, it'll lead ya straight back to Alex, although you are anything but. You'll thank me later." It stopped floating and landed on the ground before striding away, it's white aura going with it.
"That was weird, to say the least, but whatever." I said, grabbing the door handle of the right door. White light flooded into the darkness and immediately began sucking in everything around it, including me. I fought for a brief moment before allowing it to take me. "I'm comin', Alex. I'm comin'." I said, gritting my teeth. You had better have been right, cat.
I'm currently at school. Sorry it took so long, I was trying to find a reliable source to write. Anyway, I have a quick question for you all. I'm planning another book and it's a Harry Potter thing.
