Chapter 7: 'Normal'
"You have powers as well!" Steve burst, causing the two girls to jump slightly.
"Shall I call Director Fury and Agent Ingley?" J.A.R.V.I.S asked.
"No!" The young girls exclaimed, holding their hands up.
"Yes please J.A.R.V.I.S" Clint replied, ignoring the small children protesting.
"We aren't training to make them stronger if that's what you want!" Bethany exclaimed, folding her arms.
"You'll do what Fury asks you to do." Natasha said sternly, almost like she was talking to her own children.
"No we won't!" Deanna protested. "We've always said we'll never train our powers, that's just as dangerous as fighting with them."
"And besides." Bethany shrugged, her arms still folded. "We can control them that's all that matters."
"We'll see what Fury and Agent Ingley have to say about the matter." Bruce said, none of the adults giving in. With a huff the two girls walked to the elevator and climbed in.
"Where are you two going ?" Pepper asked, raising an eyebrow.
"To our rooms." Bethany replied, turning her head slightly from the group of adults. With that the elevator doors closed and descended down to the girls floors. Once it reached the correct floor the elevator released the two five year olds, who instantly ran towards the first bedroom door.
Bethany climbed onto her bed while Deanna made her over to the desk and sat down on the spinning chair next to it. They were silent for a moment until Deanna asked rhetorically "What is life?"
"What do you mean?" The brunette questioned, staring up at the ceiling as she lay back on the bed.
"I mean what is our life? First we're abandoned, then found and given a possible home, then hated by a billionaire, found after running away by the God of Thunder, exposed our talents and powers and now might be forced to train, all at the age of five!" Deanna's exclaimed.
"Our life is nothing but a problem, we cause problems wherever we go." Bethany replied sadly, "We can't have what's said to be a normal life."
"I just want to be a normal little girl. Play in the park, go to school, have friends, go to dance or piano lessons!" Deanna cried, spinning in the chair. "I want, I want a loving family. But we aren't normal enough for that."
"I know but we were born this way." Bethany sighed as the blonde also climbed onto the bed and lay next to her. "We can't do anything about it, and it's not our fault that no one wants us."
"It's just not fair." Both girls whispered before drifting off to sleep, laying side by side.
~~~~~~
Meanwhile Pepper and Bruce had stood outside Bethany's room, listening to the children's conversation. When they went quiet the two adults exchanged looks before taking the elevator back to the main floor, where Director Fury and Agent Ingley had just arrived.
"Well? Where are they?" Fury asked impatiently. "We need to see these powers and quick, I need to get back."
"They're asleep." Bruce said sadly. Pepper let her head drop just as sadly as Bruce's words.
"What's wrong?" Steve asked, standing to his feet slowly. "Are they are okay?" The concern in his voice was hard to miss.
"Physically yes." Bruce replied.
"Emotionally." Pepper sighed. "No where near. They just want a normal five year old life, but they know they can't get it because of their powers and talents. They don't find anything fair anymore and sound heartbroken over it."
"So what can we do to make them feel like little kids?" Jamelah asked.
"Deanna mentioned school, friends, playing in the park and having lessons like piano or dance. Things any little girl would do." Pepper replied.
"They seem to feel really cut off from the world and children their age." Bruce concluded. "They only thing we'd be able to do is give them a normal life, as normal as it can get when living with us anyway."
"So we send them to school, let them take part in music or talent lessons and make life here as home like as possible?" Thor asked.
"They'd be better at the safe house then." Clint spoke, looking at Natasha.
"Safe house?" Everyone (but Natasha, Jamelah and Fury) questioned.
"No" The Director shook his head. "They can stay here like planned unless something comes up, only then will I make the decisions to take them to the safe house."
"But-"
"Butts are for sitting on Romanoff, this is my decision." Fury cut off the red head. "And I'm sure Agent Ingley would agree with me."
"Whatever you feel right Sir."
