Chapter 40: Conversations
Due to how late it was, Maria was forced to leave the cell. "Goodbye, Nue-sama." Maria said with a bow. I waved she left. "Ibiki wants to have a word with you." The guard said. I gave a nod as I stood to my feet.
The guard opened my cell door and walked into my cell with chakra-restraining cuffs. I held out my wrist and he put the cuffs on. "Let's go." He said, tugging me forward with a rope that was attached to the cuffs. "Hai." I walked with him as he led the way.
When we got to the interrogation room, they did the same thing they did earlier; They chained me to the table while Ibiki sat across from me. "Ready for our game to begin?" Ibiki asked. "Yes." I answered, calmly. "What is Akatsuki planning right now?" He said.
"I'm not sure. Now that the leader of the Akatsuki is dead, I'm fairly sure that everyone will go their separate ways. I guess that means no more capturing Jinchuriki. And there's also a member of the Akatsuki that isn't who he says he is. I don't even know how to explain it." I answered.
"Does he have a name?"
"Tobi. But he has another name, too. I just can't remember it at the moment."
"Do you know anything else?"
"No, I don't think so."
"Now that the leader of the Akatsuki is dead, what are you planning to do?"
"Hmm... That's a good question. To be honest, I don't really know. What do you think I should do?"
"Well, for one thing, considering the circumstances, you'll be sentenced to four months in prison. Once you've served your sentence, you'll be free to roam the village. However, you'll be under surveillance by the ANBU Black Ops."
"I suppose that's understandable. Is it possible if you could make my sentence a little bit longer? To six months perhaps?"
"Why longer?"
"Oh, come now, Ibiki. I think you already know why. You're not going soft on me, are you?"
I yawned while covering my mouth. "Well? Don't just stare at me like that? Aren't you going to ask me any more questions? Or are you running our of things to ask?" I said. "Hmm... Take her back to her cell." Ibiki said to the guard.
The guard unchained me from the table, cuffed me, then took me back to my cell. Once I was there, I stepped into my cell and the guard closed the door behind me. I put my hands through the bars so he could take the handcuffs off me.
After he left, I walked over to the corner of my cell and sat down, sighing. "Here," The guard came back with a set of clothes in his hands. "Put these on." He instructed. He handed me the clothes through the bars and I set them on the floor, starting to strip out of my clothes.
I stopped when I noticed the guard was watching. "Do you mind?" I said. "Huh? Oh, uh...! Sorry!" He said before quickly turning around. I giggled at his shyness as I proceeded to strip out of my clothes and change into the new ones. I'd like to refer to them as rags.
Once I was dressed, I handed the guard my clothes and he walked away. I went back over to the spot I was in and sat down, looking outside my barred window. "The moon... is so blue." I whispered.
When morning arrived, I got a few visitors. "Nue-chan!" I stood up as Naruto greeted me in front of my cell with the biggest smile on his face. "How's it going, Naruto?" I asked, smiling back at him. "I'm fine. But what about you? How are you holding up?" He asked.
"I'm fine." I answered. "So, how long did they say you'd be in here?" Kiba asked. "Well, Ibiki said, I'd be here for four months. But I told him, I should be in here for six months." I explained. "Six months?!" Kiba, Shikamaru, Naruto, and Choji said.
"Yeah. Seeing how I've done a lot of damage to the villager and the villagers, I think that's fair. Do you think I should push it to a year?" I asked, calmly. "No way!" They yelled, making me laugh. "Although, I wish they had given me a more suitable cell." I said.
"Suitable cell?" Choji asked. "You know, like a cell where it will be harder for me to escape." I explained. "What's wrong with this one?" Kiba asked. I sighed before easily slipping myself in between the bars, making everyone's jaw drop.
"Because I could easily escape any time from this cell if I really wanted to." I stated, bluntly. I went back inside my cell and sat down on the floor. "Anyway, how's everything in the Leaf Village?" I asked.
"It's going well. Everyone's really working hard to recreate the village from the attack." Shikamaru explained. "I wish there was some way I could help to make the process go faster. But I'm afraid I can't do anything from behind this cell." I said.
"You just said, you could slip out of that cell any time you want." Kiba said. "Even so, I still have to serve my sentence. It'd be rude of me if I just left without saying anything. Not to mention, I could be breaking the villagers' trust. Not that they trust me, anyway." I mumbled the last part.
"Don't worry about them, Nue-chan. I'm sure they'll trust you again." Naruto said, trying to cheer me up. I smiled at him. "Thanks, Naruto. How's Hinata doing, by the way? Is she okay?" I asked. "Yeah, she's doing fine." Kiba grinned.
"That's a relief." I said. "Tell me about it. If it wasn't for your blood, she wouldn't have made it. You really saved her, Nue." Shikamaru said, making me feel a bit happier. "How did you know I healed her with my blood?" I asked.
"She told us." Choji answered as he ate a bag of chips. "Oh, that reminds me. Here,"
Naruto went into his pocket and pulled out my headband. "This came off when Pein stabbed you." He explained, handing it to me between the cell bars. I didn't know I had lost it. Now that I think about it, I think I left my wolf mask behind, too. "Nue, you're crying." Kiba noticed.
I touched my cheek, feeling that it was wet with tears. "I'm sorry. I didn't realize," I wiped my face. "Thanks, Naruto." I said, taking the headband. "Oh, by the way, have you seen my mask? I think I left on the battlefield. You can't miss it. It has the face of a wolf on it." I explained.
"I'll see if I can find it." Shikamaru said. "Oi! Visiting hours are over!" The guard said. "What are you talking about? We still have about ten minutes." Kiba said. "Ibiki wants to keep the monster's visits short." The guard said.
"Hey! Nue-chan's not a monster!" Naruto snapped. "Naruto," I reached out to him through the bars, grabbing his sleeve. "It's okay." I assured him. Naruto's frown disappeared as his calmed down. "We'll talk to you tomorrow, Nue." Shikamaru said.
"Promise?" I held out my hand to him for a handshake. "Promise." He confirmed with a smile, taking my hand and shaking it. "Oh, yeah! I almost got!" Naruto went into his pocket and handed me a necklace.
I gasped, realizing it was the necklace Iri gave me when I moved to the Leaf for safety. "Oh my gosh... I totally forgot about this." I said, looking at the necklace. "I think Iri would've wanted you to have that." Naruto said. I smiled at him.
"Thanks, Naruto," I put the necklace on and smiled. "I'll never it take it off. This way, it'll feel like Iri's is with me." I said. "Iri will always be with you. In here." Kiba said as he placed a hand over his heart. "Thanks, Kiba." I thanked him.
"Let's go. Visiting hours are over." The guard repeated. "We're going. We're going." Kiba said. "See ya later, Nue." Choji said, walking away with a wave. I waved back as they all walked away. I put on my necklace and yawned before leaning back against the wall.
"Here's your food." The guard said, sliding the food tray beneath the bars. I looked at the tray as it slid over to me. Inside the tray, was some rice and a small cup of water. I took the spoon I was provided, then scooped up some rice, taking a bite out of it.
"I prefer yogurt. But beggars can't be choosers. Especially when you're in jail." I reminded myself before eating some more rice. I took a sip from my water, then looked through the bars of my cell, noticing guards bringing in another prisoner.
'Wonder what he's in here for?' I thought. Once I was done with my meal, I set the tray near the cell door so the guard could come take it away when he got the chance. I looked out my window as the sun was still out. "It's still pretty early," I yawned.
"Well, time for bed." I said to myself before lying down on the dirty and dusty floor. I closed my eyes, falling asleep. "With any luck, Tobi won't find me here. I don't wanna go back to Akatsuki. I can't go back... when I know I'm being used. This is my home, and I want to stay here."
