The goddess Iris threw a muffin at the giant Polybotes, who mistook it for a grenade!
Percy's P.O.V
My eyes cracked open and I saw a face leaning over me, eyes shut as she sleeped.
"Hey Thals." I croaked. She shot up, suddenly wide awake.
"Wha-whasat?" She asked, looking around. I chuckled hoarsely.
"Thals, calm down." I said.
"Oh my gods! Per-" I quickly cleared my throat.
"I-I mean, Monos." She quickly corrected herself. "I was so worried about you." I smiled.
"You'll need a lot more than that to take me down." I said.
"Do you think you'll be better by tonight?" She asked.
"Um, sure, but why?" I asked, confused.
"It's capture the flag tonight!" She said excitedly. I instantly perked up.
"Can I play as a wolf?" I asked. She shrugged.
"I'm not sure." She admitted.
"Did anyone see me come into camp?" I asked.
"The hunters did, but I managed to drag your big wolfy body here before you turned back into a human. You're really heavy you know."
"Oh, you did not just say that!" I said, snapping my fingers at her. She laughed at me.
"Yup I did." She said with a smile.
"You just insulted king Persasseus! You will pay for that, girlfriend!" I said sassily. Thalia just laughed.
"Persassy strikes again." She said. Just then I heard someone coming. Imediately I turned into a wolf and watched the door open as someone came in.
"Thalia my dear, is your wolf-pet alright?" Chiron asked. I jumped to my feet.
"Wolf-pet?! I am not a wolf-pet!" I growled. Chiron skittered nervously.
"I-I didn't mean any offence, um..." He trailed off, not knowing my name.
"Monos. My name is Monos. I am the guardian of the hunt." I told him. He frowned in surprise.
"A werewolf as a guardian? That's a little shocking." He confessed, "Anyway, Monos. Are you feeling better? When I first saw you, you were unconscious and looked pretty badly injured."
"Well as you can see, I'm perfectly fine." I said simply.
"Um, Monos would like to join us in our capture the flag game tonight. Would he be allowed?" Thalia asked. Chiron thought about it.
"Well, people have been asking if the campers could use Festus. I suppose if I allow you to play, Festus can too. Is that alright?" Chiron asked. Thalia and I shared a look. Festus would be a difficult opponent, with his giant teeth and claws. Oh and don't forget the... I then had an idea.
"Fire." I muttered breathlessly. Thalia looked confused for a moment before understanding what I meant. We imediately knew the answer.
"We-" I started.
"-agree." Thalia finished. Chiron studied us, looking surprised.
"The last people that could end each others sentences was Thalia, Nico and Percy because they were so close. It's peculiar that you can too." Chiron looked slightly suspicious.
"Yes. I suppose it is." I replied coolly.
"Chiron?" A voice called out. A voice that I was really familiar with. I felt my fur bristle angrily but when Thalia put a hand on my shoulder, I relaxed slightly.
"In here my child." Chiron called back. I held back my deep growl as a certain grey eyed blonde entered the room. Thalia next to me also tensed and glared at Annabeth. She looked surprised that Thalia was here then crinkled her nose at me as if I were some disgusting thing at the bottom of her shoe. I felt hot anger run through my fur. Then Leo came running in, right after her.
"Chiron, Leo wants to know if we can use Festus tonight." Annabeth told Chiron. Leo nodded vigorously, a hopeful look in his eyes.
"I have decided yes-" Chiron started.
"YES!" Leo yelled in triumph, "TONIGHT WE ARE GOING TO WIN!" Thalia and I both rolled our eyes.
"As if." Thalia muttered.
"-As I was saying." Chiron continued. "Festus will be allowed if, and only if, the campers agree to let Monos play as well." Annabeth frowned.
"Monos? Who the Hades is Monos?!" Annabeth demanded.
"The guardian of Artemis' hunt. Remember, Artemis told us at the meeting on Olympus?" Chiron gently reminded her.
"Alright, he can play." She snickered, "As if anyone can stand up to a giant, metal, fire breathing dragon. But where is this, Monos guy anyway?" She asked impatiently.
"I'm right here." I snapped. She jumped in fright then turned her nose up at me.
"A werewolf? Artemis must be insane, trusting a mutt like you." Within two seconds Annabeth lay on the ground with me standing over her, my teeth bared threateningly at her throat while growling viciously, Thalia had an arrow pointed at her head.
"Get it off me! Get it off me!" Annabeth shrieked.
"First off, NEVER EVER call Artemis insane, second, never call Monos a mutt again, and third, this 'werewolf' is a hundred times better than you ever were!" Thalia spat and sheathed her arrow, "Let's go." I jumped off of Annabeth and followed Thalia out of the door. I glanced at her and noticed the tears in her eyes.
"Hey Thalia?" I asked.
"Mm?"
"Thank you." I said. She seemed surprised at my gratitude.
"For what?"
"For... for everything. For standing up for me, even against your oldest friend."
"Monos, you're my family. And like you, I would do anything for the ones I love. Even though that's not my fatal flaw, I am still loyal to friends and family. Even stand up for you when no one else will. I'm just ashamed that I could believe the lies that Annabeth fed us. I should never have doubted you." She looked at the ground in shame. I softly nuzzled her shoulder.
"Thalia, it's not your fault." I murmured. She took a deep breath.
"You're right. It's not." She got an angry glint in her eyes, "It's Annabeth's! This is all her fault! I am going to make sure that I punch her really hard tonight." She growled. I blinked slowly. Okay. That's not how I imagined this conversation would go, but okay.
"Thals, get on my back." I ordered. She froze in her ranting.
"Wait, what?" She asked in confusion.
"Just do it." I told her and she slowly climbed up. "Let's go." I started off at a jog but then reached a full out sprint as we neared my destination. I ignored the curious stares that we had earned by both the campers and hunters.
"Where are we going?" Thalia asked.
"You'll see." Was my answer. I saw the crystal blue lake in front of us and went faster. Thalia must've realised where I was going because she immediately tensed.
"Hang on tight!" I shouted and jumped. Time seemed to slow down. I could see every drop of water, I could hear Thalia's screams, her hands clutching at my fur, I could feel every ray of the sun on my back. And then we hit the water. The force of the jump pushed us deep into the clear lake, the current pulling at us. I could easily breath, but I knew Thalia couldn't. I swam upwards and quickly my head broke through the surface. I willed myself to be wet, otherwise it would be suspicious. Thalia gasped for air, panting with exhilaration. I kept moving all of my paws to stay floating, Thalia laughing from my back. I glanced over my shoulder and saw her soaking wet, but grinning from ear to ear.
"THAT WAS AMAZING!" She shouted happily. I heard a gasp and turned to see Nico standing at the edge of the water.
"Thalia?" He asked meekly.
"Hey, Nico's back!" Thalia said to me. I doggy paddled towards him and climbed onto the grass. As soon as Thalia had climbed off my back, I shook myself like a dog would, spraying water onto both of them.
"Monos!" Thalia glared at me but I just offered her a wolfish grin. A look of understanding passed on Nico's face.
"So you're the guardian of the hunt. I didn't expect you to be a werewolf." He admitted.
"What's wrong with that?" Thalia demanded with a glare. Nico shifted uncomfortably under her gaze, eager to change the subject he asked,
"Have the hunt found any signs of Percy?" Thalia and I exchanged quick glances.
"No." We said simultaneously. He heard the tone of our voices that said,
'Drop it' and thankfully, he did.
"Thalia, Monos, there you are." Phoebe's voice said from the tree's. "Where have you been? Some campers said that they spotted you two running into the woods."
"That would be correct. Thalia was riding on my back while we jumped into the lake." I told her. Phoebe shook her head, amusement clear in her eyes.
"You know, the hunters should have a little fun for a change." Thalia said. Phoebe considered it for a moment.
"Okay. I'll go get everyone else and we can swim here for awhile." She said and left.
"What about you Nico? You wanna swim?" Thalia asked. He looked uncertain.
"I-I don't know. I'm not a huge fan of water. Not since my cousin was here." He admitted. Thalia and I shared another telepathic conversation. It went something like this:
Thalia: Will you tell him the truth?
Me: No.
Thalia: Why not?
Me: Because he believed Annabeth.
Thalia: So did I!
Me: But you apologized.
Thalia: Come on! He's your cousin!
Me: Thalia, no.
Thalia: Alright fine. I didn't want to have to resort to this, but if you don't do this, I'll-
Okay, you know what? I'm gonna leave that part out because of how dam violent and terrifying it was. Ha, dam. Anyway, back to the point. I flinched away from Thalia's killer glare, knowing that she had won.
"Um, Nico... I-I..." I stammered. Just then the hunters sprang from the forest. I let out a sigh of relief but Thalia caught my eye and I knew what she was thinking.
'We'll finish this later'
"Cannon ball!" Someone shrieked and water splashed into the air. I bent low and Thalia jumped onto my back again.
"Onwards my steed!" Thalia yelled. Wait, did she just call me a steed? I ran forward, to the water but as soon as I got to the edge, I froze in my tracks. Thalia, who didn't expect me to do that, went tumbling over my head and into the water. As she resurfaced, coughing and spluttering, everyone laughed.
"I am not a steed." I told her. She just rolled her eyes at me as I walked into the water. Soon I couldn't feel the bottom anymore and started swimming. I felt hands on my shoulders and someone hauled them self onto my back. I glanced behind me and saw Thalia sitting there. I swam away from the others so that I could show her something.
"Watch this." I murmured to her. I dived down, making the current pull us deeper. I closed my eyes and an air bubble appeared around our faces. Thalia stared around in awe.
"Wow." She whispered, 'This is awesome." I grinned wolfishly.
"Now watch this." I closed my eyes again, this time calling to the fish. The all answered my call and swam around us, a rainbow of brightly coloured scales surrounding us. I swam back up to the top and we both pretended to gasp for air.
"You guys were down there for quite a while." Nico said, staring at us. I floated in the water for a while, realising how much I had actually missed this place. The last time I had been here was for a picnic with Annabeth. We had gone swimming afterwards and had watched the sun go down. It was an amazing day. I pushed away those memories and rolled over in the water. Thalia fell off of my back with a shriek and I swam to shore, pulling myself out of the water. She stormed after me, eyes glinting from fake anger.
"I'm gonna get you!" She howled and launched herself at me. I jumped away, easily dodging her. She sprang at me again and I rolled to the side. An epic game of chase began to ensue when I heard it. A low growl filled my ears and I stopped, looking for the source of the sound. Thalia used my distraction and jumped at me, making us roll over each other on the grass. Nico watched us with a slight smile on his face. Thalia jumped on my back but I didn't even notice. I scanned the woods, looking for the thing. It growled again, this time further. I sprang to my paws, Thalia slipping off of my back as I did.
"Monos? What's wrong?" She asked but I didn't pay her any attention. A howl filled the air everyone froze in what they were doing. That sounds familiar. I thought and before I knew what was happening, I was racing through the forest towards the sounds.
"Monos wait!" Thalia's cries grew fainter and fainter the more I ran, but the sound of fighting grew. I stopped as I saw four hellhounds. Three of them were attacking one of them and it looked like it was loosing. I don't know why I did it, but I sprang at the first hellhound, my powerful jaws locking onto his neck. He whimpered as I bit down harder and suddenly I was surrounded by gold dust. The other two hellhounds lost interest in the lost one and started circling me. The first leapt at me but I jumped backwards and the second jumped onto my shoulders. I whirled around, trying to dislodge the monster from my back but it's claws were gripping my fur. His jaws clamped down on my throat but I struggled fiercely, trying to loosen his grip. An unbearable pain shot through my neck as the hellhound tried to kill me. The second one hit into me, pushing me to the ground. He tried to bite at my exposed stomach, I thought that I was done for when the last hellhound threw itself at the monster on top of me. They both tumbled to the ground in a whirlwind of claws, teeth and fur. I launched myself at the other hellhound and dug my teeth into his shoulder. He howled with pain as I heard a bone snap. I let go and he fled away. I looked around and saw gold dust on the last hellhound. I was about to attack it when it spoke to me.
"Thank you for helping me." It had a kind, warm voice, obviously female.
"It's all right." I said back warily.
"You smell familiar." She said. I tilted my head.
"You do too. You also look familiar. Where are you from?" I asked.
"Well, I lived in the labyrinth for a long time but my owner died and I was given to someone else to be cared for. He was also nice but then was accused of something he didn't do and ran away. So now I live here." She told me. I felt a chill down my spine.
"What-what is your name?" I asked, pretty sure I already knew the answer.
"Mrs. 'O Leary." She said. I staggered.
"It really is you." I gasped.
"Who are you?" She asked.
"
My name is Percy Jackson." I said, wondering what her reaction would be. She froze, her eyes big.
"It... It can't be." She gasped. I nodded.
"It is. I'm a werewolf now."
"But-but..." She stammered.
"Look, I have to go, but I'll visit you soon." I promised her and went back into the direction I had come in. After quite a while, I was feeling dizzy and a bit lightheaded. I've probably lost quite a bit of blood from my numerous wounds. Luckily I came to the lake where the hunters had been swimming, but no one was there. I looked around, but everyone had gone.
"Oh thank Olympus." I muttered and stepped into the water. Almost immediately I felt the water healing my wounds. When they were all healed, I stepped out of the water and raced back to camp. How was I supposed to know that someone had been spying on me the entire time?"
