Chapter Seventeen - Landslide

A week has passed with no sign of Emerys' memories being recovered and it was getting harder and harder for Killian to see and empty chair where she should be in class, but he was sure it was nothing compared to how it was going to be with her back at school.
One evening, Emerys decided to go through the contacts on her phone, texting every name she didn't recognise.
She had gotten to know her friends again, but there were still a few loose ends.
She laid on her bed, scrolling through her contacts when she got to 'K'.
Only one name was there.
"Killian..." She uttered to herself.
She pressed the text button, which took her to a whole bunch of conversations.
She began to realise that whoever this 'Killian' was, she loved him dearly and he loved her too.
She decided to text him.
'Um hey. So I was going through my phone and saw our past text conversations. If you don't mind, I'd like to meet up and talk. I don't know if you know this, but I lost my memory in an accident. I'd like to see if I can get some of those memories back.'
She placed her phone down on her stomach, looking up at her ceiling.
A few minutes later, her phone buzzed.
'Yes I know about your memory loss. I think meeting up would be a good idea. Your favourite place was always the docks. Would you like to meet there later tonight?' He texted back.
'I'll be there at nine.' She replied.

Nine o'clock on the dot, Emerys showed up at the docks and sat in what she was yet to remember as her favourite spot.
Soon after, Killian's grey and black Chevelle pulled into the parking lot.
He couldn't have been more nervous.
How would she react when she found out that she'd been dating her teacher basically since she moved here?
He slowly made his way down the docks, fully aware that Emerys couldn't quite see him through the moonlight yet.
But when she did, she gasped and stood up.
"M-Mr Jones..." She stuttered. "What are you doing here?"
"Emerys... Sit down, please. I'll explain everything." Killian replied.
The girl couldn't be any more confused, but complied with his request and retook her spot on the edge of the dock.
"So... You're Killian?" She mumbled.
"Yes. We met the day you moved here. Unofficially at Granny's, officially right here where you're sitting now." Killian smiled. "You had your journal in your lap and a bottle of whiskey at your side. We talked for hours and quickly grew close, I walked you home and it went from there until school started and I discovered that you were my student and I your teacher. I tried to call our relationship off, but you were a wreck and I wasn't much better. I couldn't get you off my mind. So we started our relationship again on a discreet basis. We spent Christmas together, your birthday. I got you the necklace you're wearing."
Emerys looked down at the pendant, reading the quote inside.
"I was wondering where this came from." She chuckled. "I love it."
"I know." Killian smirked. "As part of your Christmas present, I took you back to New Orleans and you showed me all of your favourite places – the cemeteries, the Café du Monde, Theodora's Voodoo Shop. We went to see Stevie Nicks play live and you had the time of your life."
Killian pulled out his phone, going to his gallery where he flicked through pictures of them in New Orleans.
"Wow... I don't think I've ever seen myself so happy." Emerys sighed. "I just wish I remembered it."
"I'll help you." Killian said, going to his music playlist.
He pressed on their song and turned up the volume before standing up.
Landslide began to play as he held out his hand for Emerys.
She looked up at him, confused, but took his hand anyway.
The pair of them danced in the moonlight to the music.
"I love this song." She mumbled against his shoulder.
"I know you do, love. This is our song." Killian replied, softly, taking in the fruity scent of her pale hair.
"This feels so right..." Emerys whispered as the song came to an end.
Despite the lack of music, the pair continued to sway to their own tune.
"That's because it is right."
Emerys parted slightly from Killian.
"I wish I could remember all of this." She sighed.
"Well..." Killian shrugged. "Perhaps we can make new memories to keep you company until your old ones come back - if you want to, of course."
"If you don't mind, I'd like to think on it." She replied.
Killian couldn't deny that he was a little disheartened, but he understood entirely.
"Of course, love. I'll be waiting until you decide. However long that takes." He smiled, leaning in to kiss her forehead gently.

Emerys laid on her bed with Landslide on repeat. After Killian had played it earlier, she felt a certain familiarity that she hadn't felt any of the other countless times she had played the song.
She sang along softly to every word – a couple of occasions she swore she was remembering things, but quickly began to doubt herself.

Meanwhile, Killian was laying in his own bed, flicking through the pictures on his laptop of all his memories with Emerys.
Soon enough, the video Regina had taken during the party of them slow dancing to Landslide appeared.
He pressed play, instantly feeling as though his heart would burst out of his chest. Emerys looked so happy and content in his arms.
He realised that this was the last weekend they had spent together and the second to last time they had been in front of a camera.
The next image to come up was also on the night of the party.

*Flashback*

Everyone had left.
Emerys helped Killian clear up all the bottles and cups from the living room, the pair exchanging smiles every now and then.
Later on, they were in bed, enjoying each other's company as their naked bodies entwined with one another.
"I love you." She said, softly.
"I love you too." He replied, kissing her hair.
He then remembered, sitting up.
Emerys moved away a little as she watched Killian reach into the draw of his bedside table, pulling out a small, neatly wrapped box.
"Happy birthday, love." He smiled, handing her the gift.
She smirked and tore open the paper, revealing a jewellery box.
Emerys frowned, opening it.
Inside was a necklace with a pendant shaped like a key. In the top of the key was a tiny quote.
"Though she be but little, she is fierce. Shakespeare." She giggled, looking up to meet her love's gaze. "This suits me perfectly.
"My thoughts exactly, love." He chuckled. "Need a hand?"
Emerys nodded, shimmying to turn away from him, handing him the necklace.
He clipped it around her neck and moved her white locks out of the way.
"I love it. Thank you, Killian." She smiled, turning to face him once again.
"You're most welcome. Happy birthday, my beautiful little love."
Her smile only grew as she leaned in to give him a long, passionate kiss as their naked night began all over again.

Killian stared at the picture. Both of them were naked, but covered by his bedsheets. They held up a hand each, forming a heart as they shared a kiss. Despite their locked lips, he could still see the smile Emerys didn't care to hide.
She was happy and she loved him.
And that broke his heart.
He blinked away the tears in his eyes when he heard his phone vibrate.
The text that had come through was from Emerys.
'If I could feel even half as happy as our text conversations appear, or the warm aching my heart feels when I listen to Landslide, then I want to remember and I'm going to need your help.' It read.
Killian gave the text a small smile.
'Of course, love. I'll help in any way I can.' He replied.
'I suppose I'll see you in school on Monday then.' She said.
'Back so soon? How's your head?'
'Still hurts, but it's the final couple of months and I can't afford to take any more time off school...'
'Alright, love. Just take it easy, okay?'
'I will. Have a good weekend.'

Killian sat at the bar with Liam, Robin and Kristian next to him.
He looked down at his beer rather blankly, thinking about nothing in particular.
"You alright there, mate?" Robin asked. "You've barely touched your drink or said a word all evening."
Killian looked up at him and gave a pathetic excuse for a smile.
"I'm fine, mate. Just not feeling guy's night, that's all." He sighed.
Kristian and Liam shared a look.
"Is this about our little mouse?" Liam asked.
Killian nodded.
"Still can't remember anything?" Kristian raised an eyebrow.
"Not a thing. Though she did find out that, not only am I her teacher, I'm also her boyfriend."
"How did she take that?" Robin chuckled.
"A lot better than I thought she would, to be fair. But she's very apprehensive about being with me now. However, she said she wants to remember. Apparently, she was looking over our old text messages and said she wants to feel that again." Killian replied.
"Well that sounds like progress, Jones. You should be happy about that." Robin smirked, tilting his beer glass towards him before taking a sip.
"I suppose. I just hate the waiting game." Killian sighed, taking a huge gulp of his beer just as the last song he wanted playing came through the bar speakers. "Aw fuck..." He huffed.
"What?" Liam frowned.
"It's their song." Kristian poorly attempted to whisper to him.
"I'm going to get some air." Killian slipped off the bar stool and made his way towards the exit.

Emerys sat at her vanity, staring at the necklace around her neck through the mirror.
She sighed and picked up her phone, going to her contacts.
"Hi Kit-Emerys..." Killian answered, mentally slapping himself.
"What were you just about to call me?" She wondered.
"Uh... Kitten. It was my nickname for you." He replied, running his free hand through his hair in frustration.
"Sounds a bit cheesy if you ask me." Emerys smirked.
"Believe me, love. It's not nearly as cheesy as the one you have for me." Killian chuckled. "It was Captain. You said a mixture of my love for sailing, plus the fact that I apparently run my class like a crew gave you the idea."
"Oh God..." Emerys winced, playfully.
"Did you call for any particular reason, or just to regret your pet names?" Killian smiled.
"I was actually wondering if I could come over. I'm beginning to hate the sight of my bedroom and the constant silence." Emerys huffed, laying her head down on the vanity.
Killian's heart fell a bit.
"I'm not actually home right now, love. It's guy's night. But honestly, I'm hating it. So if you want to make your way over, my taxi should get there around the same time as you." He said.
"Oh yeah, sure. I'll leave in a minute then." Emerys replied.
"Alright. I'll see you in a bit." Killian gave a small smile – so small that it remained undetected to Emerys through the phone.
"See you in a bit... Captain." She teased.
Killian laughed.
"Bye, love."
