(Spicing Up Your Writing) Answer to Jaysen27's Question 3

How do you "spice up" your writing? -- Jaysen27

In other words how to keep your writing from sounding dull, if I am correct??

How to spice up your writing...

Really I believe it mainly comes from your "voice" (the way your writing sounds). You don't automatically have a perfect voice. You have to grow it by writing. Trust me, your first paragraphs are going to be a nightmare. Keep writing no matter how it sounds.

There are different things you can do to keep readers engaged and to make it all flow (I hope that's what you mean by "spice.")

Take out as many thats that you can. (See what I did there?) Compare it to this: Take out as many thats as you can. Tighter, right?

Also I've noticed using contractions also makes writing more tight.

Passive voice will also make writing sound boring. This is something I struggle with and to be honest I can't give you a really good explanation of what it is. Have you heard of telling not showing? That is basically what it is. What you want to achieve is show don't tell. I was told to read my writing out loud and listen to see if I sound like a robot.

Now my favorite part to spice up your writing is where characterization comes in. Once you really know your character and are in their mindset, their personality will bleed through into your writing. I use a lot of sarcasm in my writing. I love to add what the main character is thinking. Now you can add thoughts in 1st person past as well as third person, but it is a lot harder to do than in 1st person present, which is what I always write in. I tried past but quickly switched back to present.

I hope that helped. If this isn't what you were looking for, I'll try to answer again. Thanks for all your questions. I really enjoy answering them.
