7 - The Overthinker

The stars looked pretty today as well. She wondered if they ever get tired, always shining and accompanying the moon knowing the moon is not theirs. If the stars were in love with the moon and that's why they never left and shone as bright as they could. She wondered if they get bored doing the same thing over and over again.

A sigh left her mouth as she rubbed her hands together to get some warmth as a gust of cold wind blew by. She frowned regretting her decision to come up here on the roof to escape because she felt cold now. She couldn't make herself leave this place though.

'BANG'

She was startled and was brought back from her daydreams at the loud sound of the door banging open, goosebumps arose on her skin, she didn't know if they were because of the cold or the rather loud surprising sound.

She turned around to see a woman surprised as much as she was, maybe not expecting anyone to be up there. She tilted her head waiting for the apologies. They stood together in the uncomfortable silence waiting for the other to speak up. Finally, the other woman couldn't take it and spoke,

"Wasn't expecting anyone up here."

"Me neither."

The woman moved forward and as she got a better look of her she could see how beautiful she was and fairly tall. She came and stood beside her. There was silence except for the traffic noise but it was not uncomfortable like before. The puffs of air were visible between them in the cold air.

The woman took out a cigarette box out of her pocket and looked her way offering one.

"Thanks but I don't smoke."

"Oh you don't mind if I do right?"

"No no go ahead, it's fine."

She watched as she lit the cigarette with the lighter and put it between her lips and puffed out the cancerous air out of her mouth. She couldn't help but feel mesmerised by those actions, seemed like flawless moments of an actress in a play.

They just shared those moments together and looked at the stars. She found her new star to wonder about and didn't hesitate to sate her curiosity for this woman.

"So what happened?"

The woman looked back at her inquisitively and raised her eyebrows amused by her straightforwardness. She took her time but finally answered,

"I got dumped."

"Oh."

She didn't know what to respond to that other then an 'oh'. She heard her laugh and was confused as to why she was laughing, didn't she get dumped? What was there to laugh about? She couldn't understand that at all.

She stopped laughing. She knew there was more so she waited for her to talk. Puzzled and impatient she couldn't wait and asked

"Why were you laughing?"

"I don't know, life somehow just seemed funny to me."

She couldn't figure out the mystery that was standing beside her smoking a cigarette. She sighed, she was tired but her mind won't stop being so curious and nosy and asking questions. Before she could say anything the woman beside her spoke up

"People say I am too self absorbed, that I don't really even love them."

She puffed out another lungful of the smoke and said,

"I have started doubting myself now because of them, maybe they are saying the truth but it's just that I don't understand other people and their feelings, I have felt all of those emotions that others have felt but still I don't understand it or maybe I am just as self absorbed as they say."

"Don't let others judge you. You haven't found yourself yet, that's it."

Looking her way in her eyes searching for something she asked,

"Have you?"

"Huh?"

"Have you found yourself then?"

"Oh."

She turned away, not usually used to being the one who is asked questions. The traffic noise was a bit unexpectedly calming and she watched the cars move hurriedly in a race against time.

"Not yet."

"Hmm."

The woman threw the cigarette to the floor and snuffed it and turned to walk away.

"My name is Cecilia."

She stopped in her tracks but then continued walking and left. She was surprised and confused, she expected her to say her name. She looked down at the thrown away cigarette as if maybe it would answer the unasked question.

"Weird."

She just shook her head and tried to clear away at the already forming billion questions in her mind. She turned back and looked at the sky, the stars were still there.

"Stars, don't you ever get bored?"
