Chapter 58: Until It's Gone

"Bear spray!" Trevor squawked as he grabbed the aerosol can from one of the many totes in the driveway. "Why do we need bear spray? Are their bears in Big Bend?"

Lela came from behind the Rover, with black Capri tights hugging her thighs and neon orange tank glowing against her mahogany skin. "No," she snatched the can out of his hand then deposited back in the tote, "But it's for the Bobcats." She nonchalantly expressed heading back to the trunk.

"Bobcats." Trevor's eyes widen with worry as he stabbed his hand in his hair. "Fucking bobcats. Maybe we should just..."

"Just what?" Lela quipped peeking around the corner of the truck. Her face softened taking in the sight of him. "Is...Little Trevor scared." She teased in a baby voice.

Trevor tsked with an eye roll, "Don't condescend me. Anybody in their right mind would be afraid of a bobcat."

Lela stepped from behind the SUV with one hand on her waist while peering at her newly unpolished nails, "I'm not."

"Bullshit." Trevor harked rushing over to her. He grabbed her waist, moved her over to the truck. She draped her arms around his shoulders with her back against the SUV's warm fiberglass.

No wind blew during the humid afternoon as the sun burned high. No music boomed from the few cars that passed and no bicycle spokes whizzed down the sidewalk as they were body to body in broad daylight.

"I'm fearless, man." Lela grinned interlocking her fingers behind his neck. "Haven't you heard?"

"Is that so." Trey tipped up her chin. "Then who was the person screaming my name on the kitchen table last night."

Lela's face-harden as she flexed her shoulders remembering the scene last night, "Roaches shouldn't fly."

"But in Texas...they do." He whispered. "And I'm pretty sure they'll be flying on the trail."

"Trust, I packed a can of Raid, too."

Trevor laughed then tapped her nose, "I bet you did. Just don't spray me in the eye like last time."

"Oh, God! Get off her! Damn." Alyssa decreed dropping her backpack on the graveled driveway.

Alyssa's words brought laughter from Lela as her arms fell from Trevor's neck. She was happy Alyssa was back to herself. After the trial, she was a little reserved not sure how people would treat her once they found out she was the girl that the Dean's son raped. Her face and her case were on the evening news three days in a row.

"Hey, Lyssa." Trevor started as he backed up. "You want to see a dead roach."

Alyssa smirked then gestured towards him, "I'm looking at one."

"Ha Ha Ha." He faked holding his stomach like Santa Claus. "Your popcorn came." He jabbed his thumb toward the house. "Why you couldn't have it delivered to your house—I don't know."

"Cause people swipe our packages," Alyssa told getting a nod from Lela, who had a delivery of her own stolen. "Go get it." She eagerly pushed him wanting her assortment of caramel, cheddar, peppermint, and chocolate popcorn.

"Uh. Come on. You're packing it." Trevor instructed flicking her pushing hands away from him. "Hi, Daniel." He gave the quiet boy a cardboard smile then turned to Lela. "See, I can be nice."

"I know, baby." Lela shook her head at him before grabbing a tote bag full of snacks. She dropped the bag in the trunk the SUV with a huff. Sweat trickled down her back as she pushed the bag back.

"I can be nice, too." Daniel's low words greeted her back. She could feel his gaze bore on her ample derriere as she leaned in the SUV.

"Good." Lela quickly stood up. She flicked her hands ushering him to back up. He took a few steps back but made sure he was still standing underneath the rear door. "Just make sure you keep your hands to yourself, too."

"I'll try." Daniel devilishly grinned; a grin that used to make her knees wobble. "But I can't promise anything." He winked.

"Daniel, you might want to get some Clear Eyes for that." Lela slipped by him.

Daniel grabbed her hand, halting her steps and pulling her eyes back to him, "I want you back."

"Then you shouldn't have left." Lela yanked her hand away from him with fire flaring in her eyes.

He nervously wrung his hands, "I made a mistake. I can't just watch the woman I love, marry someone else."

"Popcorn is that girl's crack." Trevor disclosed as he strutted out the garage. His footfalls stopped as he studied Daniel's shell-shocked stance and Lela's faraway eyes. "Did I walk in the middle of something?"

"No." Lela cleared her throat. She ran her hands down her braids standing over the remaining bags sitting in the driveway. "Nothing at all."

Will Daniel try to get in the way of Trevor and Lela's happy nuptials?
