Chapter Seven

Bra off. Hair free from it's bun—outlining her face like a lion's mane. Harmony sat at her desk scrolling through blog interfaces. No, she wasn't the most tech savvy individual which was probably blasphemous as a millennial but those were the facts. She never made a Vine, was late to the Twitter game and still didn't have Snapchat. So, it was no surprise that she still needed two semesters of computer science. The only surprise was—how was she going to setup and run a successful blog to earn a decent grade?

"Sinclair's minor is computer science," Ariel started, she'd been laying splayed across Harmony's bed ever since they got back. "I can call him." She dropped her fork and lurched for her purse hooked on the post of Harmony's tailboard.

Harmony shook her head clicking on a interface that caught her eyes, "I'm going to figure it out." Determination laced her voice as she gawked at the wide computer screen with a less than confidant face. Her notebook had blog ideas scribbled in cursive—a handwriting that most assumed was obsolete but she thought it was an art form. The food she and Ariel stood in line forty minutes for was sitting in front of her getting colder by the second. Was McRae's bbq brisket burger and mac and cheese good cold? She was going to learn tonight. "I just need to..." She sighed, standing up, "Decide what it'll be about." She grabbed her sweet tea and climbed under the cool covers of her bed.

"What about yourself?" Ariel stabbed her plastic spork in the half-eaten baked beans. She sat up sitting the tray of food in her lap. Harmony was shocked that a girl so lean had already cleaned the bone of three ribs and polished off the potato salad. "Long lost dad. New sister. And we're white. A summer vacation that included new family members, hiking, and law school tours."

Harmony adjusted her pillows behind her back, "Nah. I don't want to write about myself." She looked around her bed for the remote to the television but the only thing there were books and Ariel. "I don't want the world knowing my business."

"Then...write about me." Ariel dug a napkin out of the plastic bag and wiped barbecue sauce off her hands. "I don't care if people know my business."

Harmony harumped, "I know." She gestured to Ariel's low cut top.

"Seriously." Ariel cupped her b-cup bosom, the tops of her milky flesh peeking over the blue shirt. "It's hot. If I could get away with wearing a bikini and shorts to class, I would."

"Bikini to class," Cairo's mellow voice resounded in her doorway. "What are you two up too?" He forged in her room and dove into her bed, next to her. It was moments like these that Harmony was happy she wasn't living in the dorm with an extra long twin bed.

Harmony read the clock on her nightstand. It wasn't even close to being ten p.m. "What are you doing here? Didn't you have a gig?"

"I did." Cario tore off his sneakers and pulled his long legs under the covers. "But they were twenty dollars short." He yawned, thrusting his hands up, collapsing back on the only pillow Harmony wasn't using. "They thought I was going to keep deejaying but I don't play about my money. So, I packed up and left." He fitted his arm around Harmony's waist and nestled his face against her stomach—the bottom of her breast caressing the top of his head. "And came over here."

"Well!" Ariel leapt off the bed, closing her tray of food. "This is my cue to leave."

"No, stay!" Harmony called out watching her sister swipe up her things around the room; shoes, purse, backpack. "We can watch something."

"I'm good." She slid on her flip flops digging her car keys out her purse. "I'll catch up with you later." She toss up a wave then pranced out the room.

"You ran her off." Harmony playfully pushed Cairo's head off her and once his hold of her slacked, she slid down further in the bed.

"Good," A sly grin claimed his plump lips. "I need some us time."

She tsked, shifting on her side to see him better. "You're the only always busy."

"I can't help it. Inspiration has been hitting." He nodded before stabbing his elbow in the pillow and resting his chin the palm of his hand, "And when the iron's hot, you gotta strike."

The content smile upon his lips brought a quirk to hers as she propped her arm on his shoulder, "How's recording going?" The smile dimmed a little when one of the members in the group he was producing came to mind. Heaven Stevens was still in his life and she didn't want to be that girl. The one that couldn't handle her boyfriend's ex still in his life. She was adamant not to let jealous rear its head in their relationship but it he was spending more time with Heaven than with her.

"We finally got the background vocals to track three down and..." He latched his hand on her waist, inching closer to her wishing he was under the covers with her. "Track four is really coming together but it's still not flowing like I want it. I think it's the lyrics, the wording is probably the issue."

"That's good. I'm sure you're fix it." She massaged the back of his neck, "When do I get to hear one of Bliss' power ballads." She'd only heard his group which consisted of Lolli, Dylan and Heaven cover top hits by R&B female groups and never any of their own personal music.

"It's not ready, yet." He gave her a quick peck on the cheek. "Enough about me, how's your day been."

Harmony felt the drum of his heartbeat against her arm as he held her close wishing he kissed another part of her body and for a little bit longer, "Just class and work." She hummed to herself staring away at the TV as the nightly begun. "I did invite Laurent to tailgate with my parents this weekend."

"Oh. That's cool. You think he'll come." His arm slipped off her waist as he sat up, scooting back against the headboard. "I mean if you invited me...I'd show."

Harmony faced him with a faraway look, "A blog about food. That should be good. I like to eat."

"Harmony, are you listening to me?'

"Yeah. I'm listening." She pushed held her curls up and off her neck, then lied back against the pillows doing they'd probably get tangled and dry if she didn't wrap it but she didn't feel like getting up. "The think Laurent will come."

Cairo's eyebrows knitted as he watched her pensively, "You're really not going to ask me to come?"

"Why would I?" She shifted her gaze from the TV towards him. "You hate football."

"I don't hate it."

"You don't like it."

He exhaled heavily plopping back against the headboard, knocking the padded frame against the wall. "That's not the point. Nevermind." He kicked his legs off the bed and scooted to the edge.

"Where are you going?" She confusingly watched him put his shoes back on.

"I forgot I have a quiz in Economics." Her bed shifted as he stood off it. He rubbed his hand over the waves of his hair as he walked to the door then he stopped, turning back to her. "If you don't want your dad to know we're together, I'm cool with that. He can still think we're friends. You don't have to just cut me out."

"I'm not—" Harmony climbed from under the covers to sit on her haunches, " Look, I don't have a problem letting my dad know that we're dating. It's just..." She raked her fingers through the sides of her hair until they wouldn't glide back further. She exasperatedly huffed then continued as he watched her intently. "I'm trying to keep the tension down and with...if Laurent comes it'll be a little complicated. Us...they'll bring more tension which would probably back it a powder keg."

Cairo nodded. "I see." He rubbed his neck walking over to her bed, tentatively, "Can we still hang out later."

"Always." She faintly smiled hoping he understood. "And we can have us time. No, Lee. No, Lyssa. No, Fiya." She rethought the last one and with a shake of hr head. "Maybe, Fiya. She'll probably be here but that's it."

"I mean..." He glanced over his shoulder into the dark hallway. "We are alone now." He slyly smirked back to her.

Harmony leaned make with a bit to her bottom lip. He quickly shut the door and cut the distance between them. He wasted little time kicking his shoes off and climbing back in the bed, pinning her beneath him and getting lost in a deep, sensual kiss.

Why do you think Cairo hasn't played Harmony any of the songs Bliss recorded?

Do you think Cairo will sleep over?
